250 Cone filter vs panel filter

    I was going to either fit a cone filter with a silicon hose to my car or just swap the air filter out for a panel filter and remove the foam in the airbox.
    I know I'll get a nicer sound with the cone filter but apart from that has anyone seen any benefits for a cone?
    I'm mapped to 320BHP.

  4. Yeah, as Mikey says, it's just a noise thing. I thought the cone filter transformed mine really, gave it a lot more personality. Very much personal choice though.
     
  5. If you are running 320 on a stock filter I think that is already quite impressive tbh, wont see much of gain changing it

    I believe K-Tec said it's the highest map they've ever had, I wanted a bit more sound but don't see the benefit of spending double for no gains of a cone over a panel.

    Obviously doesn't have the heat shield that you get in the Ktec kit but, given that the air filter is tucked behind the battery and partially sheild by the brake servo gubbins, it doesn't really make much difference. If you don't bother with the silicone hoses, it's 25% of the cost.

    I removed the sound generator too, but you don't have to do that.

    That looks nice! What did you use to trim doing the metal hose? Also what is the benefit of that inlet pipe?

  9. I used an angle grinder with a 1mm thick cutting disc, then just cleaned it up with a small file. It's made of pretty soft ally so doesn't take much cutting. You could use a hacksaw to be honest.

    I think you could argue that the silicone hoses are less susceptible to flex under load but, in reality, it's mostly just an aesthetic thing. As I had saved so much on the induction kit, man maths decided I needed the hoses too lol.

    The only thing I would say is that the air filter I used was a slightly tight fit behind the battery. It did fit, but touched the battery and inner wing slightly. It wasn't an issue but a slightly smaller one would be slightly easier and probably even cheaper!

  11. It's between the silicone hose and the cone filter. I painted it black to make it more subtle. As you can see, I didn't actually use much of it, it was trimmed down quite heavily.

    Is that silicone hose the one you ordered due to the money saving? Because I don't think it would fit in the stock hose for the airbox.

  13. I would think the silicone hose is about the same diameter as the standard turbo inlet hose, because I would have thought it can be used in conjunction with the standard air box. I don't know if anyone else on the forum has those hoses or not.

    I think I went for the 70mm alloy pipe and filter as it's the standard size. I got some guidance from a member on here about the DIY route though. I'll try to find the posts.

    I thought you needed 67mm as someone told me on here, now I'm unsure. I was going to buy the stuff but not sure what to get now.

  15. Well, I have now sold my car. Although I've sold the silicone hose kit, I do still have the air filter and alloy bend. You can buy them and give it a go if you like. Could have them for £30 posted? About half the cost of new so even less of a risk!

    The mark you can see on the alloy bend is where it was clamped to the inlet hose, so you could shorten the pipe a bit more.
