Just gone to have pads and discs changed and being thorough thought I'd have brake fluid changed as doesn't seem to have been done. Unfortunately one of the front calipers bleed nipple has imbedded itself into the caliper steel into aluminum and unable to get it out hence car now immobile!! Anyone else had this problem? Now being sent off to a specialist to be refurbed. Wish I'd never bothered!
Just bleed the one side of calliper, that way you can drive.. bleed nipples on any car tend to be a bitch and seize
Quite common, Its well worth keeping on top of them maintenance wise regularly, that goes for the Pins as well
I always put a light smear of copper grease on the bleed nipple threads on any second hand car I acquire when it comes to changing the brake fluid. Not worth the future agro of sheared nipples! Obviously that's not much help if you can't even get them out on the first attempt! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Well according to brake specialist unable to repair as threads knackered so gotta buy a new one. Dealer charging 170+vat. I know u can buy cheaper on eBay but then have postage to factor in. Plus need car back asap so delivered 24hrs and fitted at local garage.
Mustn't be the best brake specialist as i've seen loads done with thread repairs for about £30-40+vat.
Also the reason they seize in is due to galvanic corrosion, have a look into it. Basically it's an electrochemical process between two dissimilar metals. Stainless steel nipples are actually worse than plain steel, but the fact that they don't rust on the top part is the reason why people favour them.
Cheers. Update on saga. Renault forgot to place the order for the caliper so now coming tomorrow!! Ffs
Update part 2. Wasn't one in England audit issue with renault!!! So 5 days later new caliper fitted. All good you would expect oh no on bleeding them now passenger front caliper won't nip up leaking. So ff to refurb we go!!!
Won't nip up? Surely it should just tighten up into the seat of the hole... Always has for me. Try new bleed nipples first.
Update part 3 so got new caliper on and refined second caliper on front .all god you would assume but oh no Now rear caliper thread knackered due to bleeding and then 're bleeding but of course I'll be paying for the pleasure and still no car after 3 weeks. Life is fun!!!feel like selling the bloody car
It's a 2010 cup version with 106k but mainly motorway miles in very good mechanical nick up to now!! Dont bother replacing ur brake fluid that's all I say. It's a fault with the calipers
Nothing wrong with the calipers at all. Lack of any attention to them is what cause issues like these.
They use these calipers on a lot of production cars, it's not the calipers. The bleed nipples may have been overtightened previously and combined with the corrosion it's asking for trouble.
Good news got me car back with 3 new calipers fitted new brake fluid and discs and pads. All done thank God 700 quid worse off
