Best performance mods for a megane 250 for the money

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Paul21, Jan 5, 2018.

  1. Been wondering what would be the best performance mods for a megane 250 for the money. I definitely will be getting a intercooler and a remap and a induction kit(will construct this myself). Other than them things is there really any massive benefit from adding a cat back exhaust, 630 injectors and a sports cat or decat. Im asking about these extras as that is was i was looking at getting too but just wondering will I see much of a great difference in performance for the extra money that will be paid?.

    Hi Paul
If you fit 630 injectors you will have to have it mapped again, so would be worth getting them and fitting them just before mapping, I am sure that a de-cat will not necessary need a mapping, but a tweek may release a touch more power, same for the exhaust.

  3. Hi Ian

That would be the plan if I did get injectors. I know about what they can add on a 225/r26 but would they have a great benefit on a 250?. I preferably would like a sports cat over a de cat but again would there be a great benefit too?

I am not sure on the standard 250 injectors, but the 225 ones can't go much over 280 hp, 630 injectors will be more controllable and flow more fuel.
it's a shame but you need to use the same garage to get your MOT's done then there should be not much problem getting a pass on emissions, (i have been using the same garage for MOT's for over 25 years), so then go for a full de-cat

  5. Can You can sometimes get a smell of fuel in the car with a de-cat?. Was thinking a sports cat as wouldn't have to be worried about admissions then. That would be nice to have a garage like That, obviously must be good as you keep using it.

I don't have a cat of any description fitted and i have never smelt fuel inside the car, put a lot in the tank though.
They have given me a red MOT ticket before (was a friends car) that means you are not allowed to drive it away from the test center, but they let me :laughing:

  7. I bought my car with a decat and it does whiff a bit on tickover and sometimes in the car when stationary. Having said that my R53 Mini was the same with a Cat at least outside but not inside. As the first MOT in my ownership is due in March I am thinking of a sports cat although not yet asked around about the friendly MOT possibility.

I have recently sorted a Forge Intercooler so I am thinking of a stage 2 at RST and I would prefer to stay decat and save some cash and power loss but not sure which way to go....

Hang on... I have now turned your post into my mine/hijack!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Best performance mod you can make on any car is always tyres. You can have all the horsepower in the world but your only ever as good as your tyres.
Weight loss is also hugely beneficial as it affects power to weight, handling, braking & traction.
A decent diff is probably the next best mod as the oem lsd on our cars is not great.
Of course this comes from someone who uses their cars in motorsport every few weeks where actual performance matters thus my opinion/experience differs greatly to those who simply chase dyno figures or the traffic light heros.
Keep in mind the engine is only 1 small part of what makes a Renaultsport vehicle such a good proposition.

  9. Short shift. Cost me about £5

  10. I spoke to Andy at Engine Dynamics and he told me the 630 injectors won't make any difference in the 250.

I think @-Jamie- told me the same.

  11. Given the variety of responses shows the diversity in perceived assumptions of the original post. I would suggest you can even go one better than either tyres or weight reduction and that would be driver ability i.e. driver tuition. However, you need to define what “performance” means to you; power, handling, traction, braking, agility, responsiveness, etc? For what purpose; circuit, drag, rally, street, etc?

Define the purpose and the goals, and you should hopefully get more relevant information.

    Good luck!

  12. I thought, if you were going down the hybrid route they were needed?

  13. Yeah for a hybrid turbo they're needed.

I meant if you're keeping the stock turbo, they make no difference.

  14. I’ve just put a hybrid turbo, forge intercooler, fai, smf, and a couple of other mods on my car.

I’m running 348 bhp with stock injectors but they’re at 96% capacity. I also needed to decat the car as the mixture would have fried my cat pretty quickly. The standard ones don’t seem to handle the emissions well.

Also put a milltek cat back stainless on. You can smell fumes on tick over and when stationary. Don’t tend to smell them much after that.

Not needed, Even on a Hybrid you down really need them but your not going to make the most out the setup without them.

As for best mod, Out of all of mine i think the AST's are the best thing I've done. If i were ever to start again id run basic breathing mods and a map, No interior with some decent seats, Sticky rubber and a set of AST's. Cheap fun that way with a very capable car.

  18. I'm surprised to hear that. I put a 250 turbo on my 225, along with intake and exhaust mods, and I was hitting 100% duty cycle with standard injectors. I get that the 250 et al is different but if you're hitting over 90% duty cycle with a hybrid on the track then you're not leaving yourself much of a safety margin. It's not a risk I'd choose to take.

MK3 runs bigger injectors anyway over the MK2, I agree its not a risk id take but if your happy to run 340/350 on a Hybrid then you can get away with the stock injectors.

  20. 340-350 was as much as the hybrid would comfortably give. Rs tuning were happy with the setup, especially considering when I booked it in I specifically asked for the 630cc injectors and we’re happy to pay for them but they said they weren’t necessary.

I don’t track the car though so maybe that’s the difference.

  21. I was thinking engine performance at the moment. It would be for the road(daily driving). I would like to have ago on a track this year as it's something that I would like to experience. I suppose What I'm trying to get at is are some engine mods actually really worth doing for the money that is going to be spent. Say a de-cat or sports cat for example what would I gain from one, same as a cat back exhaust. I'll forget about the 630 injectors now as would not look to gain actually any benefit from them. Was also looking for some other suggestions engine wise, that are worth doing.

    Hope this makes sense

  22. Bang for buck is:

    Decat
    Cooler
    Map.

  23. Is there a major difference between a de-cat and sports cat apart from the price. I know that a de-cat would be best to go for but I'm just think about when it's MOT time, and whether or not I could find a friendly MOT tester.

  24. I couldn't be bothered with a decay myself. As you say, with the hassle of finding a tester or changing it each year, it's just not worth it in my view.

I think an intercooler and map are the limit of what I would do. You might get a bit more with some other changes but, you have to ask yourself, do you really need it?

It's all I'll be doing. I also had a mid box delete and fitted the induction kit. It doesn't make the car any better/more powerful, but just adds a bit of drama to the driving experience.

  25. This was my thinking also, if I didn't have to worry an about admissions test then I would go straight for a de-cat but its just the hassle of MOT time and finding a tester who will past it, so That's why was thinking a sports cat but for the money of buying it and fitting It, is it really worth it when i could put that to a set of bc coilovers instead as that is something I wanted to do at some stage. Like I say it will be for road use and hopefully do a track day.
