Mk3 oil cooler

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Mark_RS, Sep 19, 2017.

  1. Anyone fitted one? Which one and where? Trying to work out if it's a good idea or not for some track work.

  2. Cheers for that. That's one I've seen (universal fitting kit), just wondered if anyone has fitted one and if so where have they mounted the core as I'm struggling to see a good position...especially with the ITG filter hogging the passenger wheel arch.

Under the front crash bar. See the second photo in the link ;-)

  4. Will it still fit with your larger intercooler...?

  5. Ah monsieur Cadet! How the devil are you sir?

@APM thanks for taking the time to post...I'm wondering if it will fit with the uprated intercooler, there's no room there for a core and the poor rad is already starved.

Neil runs an oil cooler mounted in front of his FMIC, he has a thread on here, OG Trophy-R clubsport or similar

Although I'd be very wary of running it so exposed, mine will be going into the wheel arch, just need to mount it properly as my filter is in the arch as well f750ff7b21eb3d13a35fa4862b836bc1.jpg

  8. are you going to vent to the core in the wheel arch or just leave it without air flow? I'll see if I can find that thread, thank you. I might just buy one and figure out when I get it where to fit it (providing the hose reaches to the wheel arch)

With an upgraded (larger) oil cooler it could be a little tight but is possible, the N4 uses standard Intercooler so has more room.

In terms of being exposed, you can shield the fins with a cover as a form of protection or migrate it to a different location such as behind the wheel arch as already suggested but is suggested to be well vented with access to clean air and flow.

  10. Thank you. How far do the lines allow for fitting? Will it reach the NS wheel arch easily? Do you also know the weight of this kit and how much extra oil is required?

  11. Hello Mk2, I'm very well thank you sir, currently with t'family in Ibiza. The beast is well, have fitted new speakers and a DAB radio & aerial so at last I can actually bear to listen to the banging tunes, init. Have recently fitted some 19" Steevs and had them powder-coated silver, all shod with PS4S'. A pro polisher fella is giving it a clay, polish and coat of something high-tech sounding at the weekend as I just can't find the time to give it any love. Next job is a retrimmed steering wheel in black alcantara with silver stitching to go with the new black & silver RS mats and knob. Just need to remember to actually drive it now...!

That's me done, how are you and life post-C63? Sounds like the Megane is coming along nicely.....

  12. Sounds jolly good indeed sir! Are you perhaps partaking of the club scene, quaffing drugs and mixing up the muffins in a french man's kitchen till the early hours?

Your updates sound great, you do need to get it driven now. I wouldn't trim a wheel in alcantara though, it's a pain in the arse to use the wheel as it gets so worn so quickly.

Life is ok, I'm eyeing up a 255 Clio V6 for some fun on the side, Megane is about to get plastic windows, liteblox battery, half cage and a few other tweaks

  13. No Quaaludes unfortunately, just baby formula.

Noted re alcantara, have had many such trimmed wheels in the past, as it only does 10 miles a month though I think it will be fine.

255 sounds like fun and definitely a keeper! What about the R?...

  14. What is this R of which you speak?

  15. R of the R26 clan m-lord

  16. Ah...I'm with you.

I decided perhaps foolishly that although they're cheap to buy, they will be too niche in the future to be an investment (and using it on track would be pointless as the RS350 would destroy it).

  17. I think they would be a fantastic investment and definitely one to squirrel away rather than need to track. Always had a soft-spot for them.

How's the car now post re-re-map?

  18. I disagree there...V6 yes but R26.R not so sure, they're a bit too niche if you look at the ones for sale, even the cheaper ones that are in good nick don't sell. I will get a V6, my mind gets more made up every day haha. I have a friend in Sweden with a big double garage so the plan is to buy a 255 in the UK and drive it the 1045 miles to them

Car post remap is a different beast. The cold start jogging is gone, the wierd power cut I experienced is gone, the car has instant urgency now and is properly quick. It's 350/350 and I love it. The KTec map, for all my defence of them was total shit. At one point it was asking for over 2bar of boost. If I'd tracked the car with that map, the engine would have suffered.

  19. @cgrautomotive

Charlie could provide pics of mine and do something similar... mine's in front of the IC

Only temps I've had too high seem to be water temps at the ring, on a hot day (26 C) and giving it beans

On a different note, do you have your dyno output for 350/350 ... and who mapped it?

  20. Thanks again, I'm only wanting to fit a cooler if it really makes a difference and is needed...can't seem to find out an answer to that. RST did my remap after a complete mess from KTec sadly.

  21. urgh... yeah. Mine was mapped by RST originally. Similar cack torque curve. I've PM'd you

  22. You've obviously done your research! A 255 will be fun to drive, own and sit and look at. What's stopping you.....?!

Really glad for you that the car is all sorted, 350/350 are still big figures for a non-Germanic 6+ year old design 2.0l, especially through the front wheels.

On a side note, I took a new S3 for a drive the other day, fcuk me it was quick with the 4WD and DSG, I know they're "not manual" and "they're heavy" blah blah blah but there can't be many faster real-world cross-country sensible cars out there. They are five doors and an Audi, obviously, and would go nicely with the Q5, am very tempted......

  23. You're such a bad influence...I will have a think on it. A mate of mine who owns a garage is trying to source me one I have my eye on.

You mean RS3? S3 or any model of car that isn't the top model (ignoring Renault and their 250,265,275, Trophy, R etc etc) is just pointless. Every time I see a C63 that's not an S I just think 'you almost committed to being a man...but not today'

Get an RS3, you know you want to...

  24. But that's my point, the S3 was absolutely plenty powerful enough and it was all usable power, I'd say that it would be quicker cross-country than my Megane. The RS3 is another £15k realistically on top of the S3 which takes it to another level of man-maths. Plus it's less conspicuous and IMO cooler for it.

We're going off-topic, let's get back to cooling oil....

  25. Sorry I drifted off there...not manly enough for me. If you bought the RS3 though, I would always pay attention.

  26. Ha ha, touché, going forward then let's leave the extended gear-knobs and bonnet vents to you and the boring practical stuff to me...

  27. Deal! I'll be style, you be substance.
