Idle at 2k

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by StoatInACoat, Sep 13, 2017.

  1. I have managed to break my car. Been having issues with hesitation, stumbling acceleration with check injection etc and have changed coils and injectors which has improved the situation a lot but not completely cured it. Decided to remove and clean the throttle body and both MAP sensors last night but on putting it back together the car now idles at 2k. Luckily I have a spare car this week but unless it is miraculously stolen (fingers crossed) by the worlds most desperate car thief I need to fix it by the end of this week.

Things I have done since car went from good idle to bad idle:

-Removed and cleaned both MAP sensors.
-Partially removed and cleaned throttle body housing leaving breather plugged in. This is still plugged in and although I haven't replaced the gasket it appears to be tight.
-All plugs are still in. When plug to MAP on inlet manifold is unplugged the car attempts to idle then stalls. When plug to MAP behind headlight is removed the car revs it's bollocks off. Not sure if this is helpful really.

I have ordered a new/used MAP off ebay as I'm hoping it'll be a simple fix but I can't find any other threads with the same issue! Throttle flap appears to move freely and doesn't have anything wedged in it + revs normally on the pedal but settles at 2-25k ish.

Sounds like you have an air leak somewhere, also, am i right in thinking that the two sensors in the intake pipe are have the same plugs, you have not accidentally swapped them ! ! ! ! !

  3. They do but the sensors share the same part number so I am assuming they are the same? I don't think it's even possible to connect the wrong plug into the wrong sensor as the cables only really go one way.

  4. Does sound like a vac leak.next time u do a bunch of stuff like the above do one thing at a time then makesure the cars ok idling, then do next thing etc.

I woukd go back over everything and double check all fixing and fixtures.maybe a hose split as u put them back. Check thoroughly every single thing you touched.

Let is know how u get on.

  5. For clarity these are the two sensors. Interested to know if anyone has had either fail and what the symptoms were?

  7. Interesting. Actually similar symptoms to mine before I managed to make it even worse! Maybe it was on its way out and I've finished it off. Who knows, new one should arrive tomorrow apparently.

  8. Ok, well I've found the problem.

You know when you do something stupid? You hope that nobodies noticed and move on with your life. That's more difficult on the internet.

Got home, removed both MAP sensors, refitted and started car. Idled like shit. Between 1.5- 3k and hunting. Felt about on all vac lines - no leaks. Prodded both MAP sensors - no change. Fired up torque app - said "Throttle position at 14%" and holding steady? Seems odd? Vac pressure looks a bit down though? Had a feel around the throttle body... BIG air leak. Hmmm. I'll whip it off and have a look.

I've been working on cars for half my life, done some fairly involved jobs and made the odd mistake but this is the best example of my fuckwittery to date. Even more than that time I cross threaded a coil pack in similar "This'll only take a couple of minutes" circumstances.

At least it's a cheap fix:

  9. Haha so the whole time the gasket was perished and when u stripped it and then rebuilt it u "snapped " it. ?

  10. What about your initail issues you reported before this gasket escapade. Lol.did u sort that ?

an air leak then  don't worry we have all done it :confounded:

  12. When I put the throttle body back on I folded the gasket because I didn't bother removing the breather so it didn't break so couldn't see what I was doing properly. No idea if the initial problem will still be there but need a new gasket from Renault now before I can find out.

Tomorrow I'm going to reverse the polarity on the battery and fit some brake pads backwards.

  13. Haha let us know if your initial prob has gone or not.keep us posted.

I did the same thing refitting an intake manifold on a v8 Range Rover, the trouble is that there was over an hours worth of work to strip it back down, coolant drain etc.

  15. Well. Idle now back where it should be but although it felt reasonable straight away the juddery throttle has returned. No errors now which doesn't help.

Fucking thing needs plugging into proper diagnostics I think but not showing any stored codes on tourque app.

  16. After reading back through this thread i would change plugs. The ngk PFR7Z-Tg.
Also i see that u havent yet changed map sensors or bought new ones. That would be the next thing to do along with what you sugeested which is a proper diagnostic. Where u based ?

  17. Ohh and fyi the throttle on mine sits at 14% idle speed.

  18. Plugs changed about 10k ago. Could be knackered from previous misfire I guess? I have a new/old map sensor but with no codes it's a guessing game.

Based in Kent. Idle at 14 ish too. What does your vac pressure do on normal acceleration? Mine drops to 10 and peaks at 22 ish.

  19. To rule out other stuff in the last 12 months or so the following has been changed for other reasons but also for this issue:

    N75 valve
    Tdc sensor
    Fuel pump
    Plugs
    Coil packs
    Injectors
    Throttle body gasket!

It started as a major misfire and firing on 3 with engine light flashing/check injection and all that wank. Same symptoms as a dead Injector but code reader said p0300 which is non specific so changed all injectors. It has improved and is sometimes fine but has a jerky throttle now which doesn't seem to correlate with torques measurement.

I think the first misfire has fucked something else but I'm not inclined to throw more money at the piece of shit without any idea where to throw it.

  20. Sorry to keep asking all the questions but where the injectors genuine oem ones ?

I am located in Southend i am more than happy for you to come up and swap map sensors here .my mate has a decent diagnostic machine and wont charge much at all.he passed as a french master mechanic not long ago

  21. All parts genuine. Thank you for the offer, in theory I have some time off next week so tempted to drop it into Ren7oaks (had the car a few times!) and get them to plug it into clip. It's pissing me off though as it runs fine over about 2.5k without any jerkiness and sometimes seems not to have the problem at all.

New injectors and coils have improved MPG though so not totally wasted expense.

I remember u requesting this this the other day.sorry took so long

  23. Any developments? Did you manage to track down a fix after diagnostics?
