Teslas are quick with full batteries, I d o like the look of them I have a diesel and love it, mega cruise and tow car. And triple turbos and 750 nm torque and quicker than most cars
Personally I think the Mk4 from the pics does not look good, but I also don't think the Mk3 is a good looking car either. It's all going to be about the driving dynamics. I'm looking forward to the proper reviews in the coming few months, especially those done on our pot holed, poorly maintained roads as opposed to the press junkets at a super smooth circuit. I'm in the market for a change in the next couple of months, so it does come at a good time for me.
ha ha..thought that was coming..maybe the next generation renaultsports will be electric! or perhaps a renaultsport...zoe.
I'd love them to do a fast Estate, The Talisman is a superb looking thing. Cupra ST is a pretty quick car as well, Sub 8 all day.
Exactly, had my eye on the Cupra estates for a while as I'm a bit of a one car kind of guy but anything to throw in the mix as it's a sector Renault lack from their repertoire.
As someone who used to own a modified Volvo 850 T-5, I can definitely appreciate a fast estate car. Ford have done an estate version of the Focus ST and I quite like the Octavia vRS estate too. Is there an estate version of the current Megane? It will be interesting to see. VW do a Golf GTE which is hybrid so there is potential. Though I do think that full electric may well kill off a lot of hybrids if they can get the technology right. Won't be the same as good ol' petrol though.
http://www.renaultsport.co.uk/forum/default.aspx?g=posts&t=88396&p=23 Nobody commenting on the further leaked photos?? Initially I didn't think they were that good but when you consider they are likely the 'std' seats and you compare them to the std cloth seats of the 250/265 they look decent. Same with the dash from a standard Megane - megane gt one much nicer so you would hope you can at least spec that. 1.8 unit does make you wonder though, power wise. All the other big boys over 300 have a 2.5, AMG have ditched the 2.0 for the next a45 sighting heat limiting power. Seems Renault favouring emissions, hope it can still pack a punch!
You know what they should do, MGU-H/K from the formula 1 team knowledge - zero lag, massive power boost from 0rpm - that would be class leading. Won't happen I know!
Everyone is assuming that the Megane will be aimed directly at the likes of the Civic Type-R and the Focus RS etc, but we don't actually know that. It might be a Golf GTI/Focus RS rival, so they might only be aiming for 250-280bhp. It's also worth noting that people are getting 350bhp out of the Fiesta ST without touching the engine internals, so don't underestimate what a small engine can do...
Exactly, Pug 308 sort of thing but obviously one would want much more excitement than the current hot 208/308 cars. Maybe trying to keep the pricing similar to the last gen rather than the push upwards of the others. Personally 35k to 45k hot hatches seem perverse to me when there is a thread on PH about people getting deals on the M2 for not much over 40k. A mate of mine spent nearly 50k on his RS3, it looks almost identical to a basic A3 with the sport package on, crazy stuff really, makes no sense to me but he is happy.
Reading that link reminded me why I stopped visiting. You can get 300 out of a 1.8..... hell you could get it out of a 1.0 if you really wanted. The f4rt can produce 300 reliably and that's a very old engine, of course it's reasonable to think that a more recent 1.8 design can do the same. 3 years ago Peugeot put out a 1.6 with 270bhp, I wouldn't worry about it being close to or meeting 300bhp. The real problem is that's no longer a particularly headline grabbing figure imo
I get that but to me, Renault should be looking at it: Clio rs > fiesta st Megane GT > gti / st Megane rs > golf r/focus rs/civic Remembering all 3 rivals are above 300 and the Megane will be a 2018 model, it needs to take it on a notch - class leading like the 265 at the time. Sounds like they are rumouring a 280 normal and 300 trophy. I personally think it needs to be 300 normal and 320 trophy but if you only have 260 from the alpine engine, another 60 bhp will have to be big differences than just a map. Here's to hoping!
Plus on the basis a specced Megane gt is probably 30k, a specced rs will be 35k I bet. Why spend 35k on a 300bhp meg when you can get the rivals for cheaper? Needs something more than 4 wheel steer I think, like MGU or something to take it on a notch
I did the same for the GT simply out interest but was a bit disappointed in the interior, I hope they've improved the materials a bit.
While we may want that, there is nothing to say that Renault agree. It really does depend where they want to pitch it. Going up against the 300bhp+ club is a big risk, so they might play it safe. If it's 280-odd, it could eat some of the GTI/ST market, without the challenge of having to go against the super hatches. It really is all up in the air until they actually tell us something. I'd love to see it in the order of 300-320bhp, but who knows. I can't imagine that an OEM really give a monkey's uncle about that. The price is a big issue. It depends where it starts. An RS is £32k starting, a Type-R £31k. If they're in that ball park with 300+bhp, it will be ok. If it's 260bhp and that price, they will have a tough sell. The GT starts at £27k, so a starting price of £29-30k could be possible.
Can't help thinking this is going to be a ST rival, rather than a RS, in Ford parlance. Previously, Renault haven't really toed the line that other manufacturers trod, with two versions, a la ST/RS, S/RS, GTi/R etc. I think this model will be the start of this process for them, and the car will launch with 250hp. They'll champion it by saying it's more efficient, therefore better than the outgoing model. Maybe the Cup will become the upper end model with 300+hp and 5 grand price increase.
Plus on something like a Type R you can get 350+ bhp with a simple remap. That's not gonna be possible with a stressed 300 bhp 1.8.
It wouldn't surprise me. Around 270bhp wouldn't be unexpected, as it can be linked to the outgoing model and, as you say, they could offer some efficiency increase as a benefit. A flappy paddle box could also give it a slight speed advantage too. Then a bit of evolution through its life and 300bhp with something lighter in the vein of the Trophy-R to keep up with the jones'.
Don't know why I'm asking but, two questions; why would Renault care about aftermarket tuning potential when the vast majority of cars remain standard? Also, why would a 300bhp 1.8 engine be stressed? Peugeot were doing a 270bhp 1.6 engine a few years ago. Times have changed, engines are now very robust. A 300bhp 1.8 is not unreasonable at all.
I agree Renault wouldn't care and will try to lock down the ECU anyway. For buyers though, some decent and cheap tuning potential is a draw. Look at how many Meganes run a cheap stage 1 or 2 remap that adds an easy 40 or 50 bhp. You won't get that out of a Pug 1.6.
Bit of a different application though, make it drag around a ton and a bit it may not last that well. It'd be fun while it lasted mind.
I was interested in this. I had a quick look on Auto Trader and less than 10% of the 250/267/275 for sale were modified. Most cars probably won't be modified until their second or third owner, so I suspect modification potential is unlikely to have any great impact on desirability. Regardless, if the car has a 1.8 engine, I expect it will still have plenty of potential. Mercedes are getting the best part of 400bhp out of a 2.0 after all. Time will tell.
I dont think most new buyers are bothered about tuning potential....it is not high on their list. I agree that when the car has reached a certain age then the then owner is likely to be looking for more performance.....so he can RAG it round a track and have a ball
Mitsubishi got 450ish out of a 2l too, skys the limit really. What were the F1 cars back in the day, 1.5? 1000+bhp. Capacity is nothing and it's all down to making them reliable, there'll always be an amount of leeway in the oem maps too so aftermarket always has potential.
When I got the M5 I considered getting new rear half exhausts to unleash some v8 noise and get a remap. At the time no safe company had been able to unlock the ecu to remap it and the rear half sports exhaust was £7k. Fook me i thought to myself. They remap now easily to 650 but I don't want to impact the warranty as I am sure bmw can tell. And the tyres struggle as it is with 560. I am sure the majority of future mk4 rs owners won't want to impact their warranties.
I... I... I just don't know.. . I have so many questions, but no answers really yet. So many pitfalls, I hope Renault can tread a path through them all and produce a car people want to buy.
For the record, BMW were getting 1500bhp out of the 1.5 4-banger in quali trim, based of the E30 block as well. It did only last 10 minutes and used to make Piquet piss his pants involuntarily though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
They used old blocks I believe as the view was that any floors would have surfaced already. Must have been incredible to drive/experience it
