Caterham 620r

Discussion in 'Track Days & Track Driving' started by Cazper, Aug 5, 2017.

  1. i am thinking of the possibility of getting a 620r next year or the year after...I am in two minds as I really like the megane but wondered if anyone else has moved to one from a megane? I know if I pose the question on the caterham forum they will all say they are great. My megane is only for track use only

  2. PM me, if you want.
My nickname has a reason or two...

  3. Caterhams are awesome on track, they're almost too good. To some extent this takes the fun out of it because you can annihilate everything thing else on track.

  4. Will do thanks

  5. I enjoy my motorbikes so think I would love a caterham.. I am going to book up a day of drifting in a caterham and see how I get on.

  6. Or book a full trackday in a 620R with BookaTrack at Donington.

  7. Would-be awesome on track In the dry. Probably a handful In the wet. I've enjoyed rear wheel drive of caterham and Westfield's, though I'm not sure whether you could have just as much fine in a megane or a lower power seven. Depends if lap time and passing everyone floats your boat or just having fun making the best of less power? Would like another seven at some point though.

  8. Bit of a jump going from a Megane to a 620R, have you driven one? I've driven an R300 round Silverstone GP and I was amazed at how good it was. A 620R would beat everything on the track hands down, you would probably get bored of overtaking people all the time lol.
They do look the nuts though.

  9. An R620 will be beaten by very few things true. One of them is a well sorted R500 though

  10. I went from my Megane 225 running 310bhp stripped out etc to a brand new 420r

I don't know your previous car history but honestly unless you driven fast rwd cars with no driving aids quickly and competently before the 620r will be overkill. Personally buy a lesser Caterham then when you're used to it move onto the 620 should you feel the need. An experienced driver in an R400/420R would be quicker than someone who's never owned a 7 before in a 620.

You don't need the apex speeds or late braking in a 620 to be quickest in track. They're so rapid in a straight line you can make up for being slow in the corners and think you're doing great. If straight lines are you're thing though it's the 620 without question.

I've only had the 420r on Knockhill once since I've got it. Naturally it's quicker than the Megane was (by 2 seconds) but it's going to take me a hell of a long time to get anywhere near what the cars capable of. The spins, slides and odd twitch really take a different style. Certainly no barrelling into bends like you would the Megane.

I absolutely love our Caterham though, such an occasion when you push it out the drive and great fun in the road too.

  11. r26.JPG r26 abingdon.JPG thanks for the replies....I think I would probably be happy with a R400/500 as the 620r might be a bit of a handful and they seem a bit cheaper. The plan is to do the two drift days and then a track day in a caterham and see how it goes before I make any rash decisions. I don't think I would be very happy with a sub 150 bhp version though. I need some fast straight line speed but also fast cornering ability....a bit greedy I guess and I don't mind overtaking people as that is part of the fun lol. a couple of pics from Abingdon on friday

  12. Cazper were you at Abingdon on the 14th of July? I was there in a black R26 and your car looks familiar

  13. I certainly was. That day my clutch went so had to drive round most of the day in 3rd !!! And in occasions not getting any gears.
Got the clutch changed and new dmf and did a trackday on friday there and car was superb

  14. That was unlucky, at least you got it sorted quick and did another track day so close.

I was going to stop and say hello but didn't get round to it.
