Where is the hands-free microphone? (MK3)

  1. I’m putting in an aftermarket head-unit which comes with a microphone & lead for when making phone-calls. Rather than wiring this in, is there a microphone already in the car that can be used? There must be one somewhere as I used to be able to make hands-free calls with the old standard head-unit.

….Or was the microphone in the head-unit itself??

    Thanks.

  2. Up between the sun visors and just aft of the interior light switches.

  3. Up near the light in the headlining, just behind the rear view mirror you'll see a small plastic round grill. Microphone is behind that. Be gentle removing the plastic cover as they can have fragile clips.

  4. Thanks guys!

So this must’ve plugged into the standard head unit somehow and therefore hopefully somehow I could plug it into my new head-unit.

There is a dedicated mini-jack socket in the back of the new head-unit for the supplied new microphone so I would need the old microphone to have a corresponding mini-jack plug.

All the plugs out of the old head-unit are accounted for though – apart from the two blocks in the photo below, which I think must be for the aux inputs (down below the key-card slot) and to the display. Therefore I definitely don’t have a mini-jack from the old microphone….

Do you happen to know how the old microphone was connected in to the old head-unit?

  5. This is French wiring we are talking about here :tongueout: you keep making a lot of hard work for yourself lol

  6. Yep, I’ve slowly figured that out! The new head-unit comes with the new microphone therefore I will just clip it to something semi-out of sight - was just hoping to re-use the standard one.

Next job is to mount and wire in the DAB aerial, do you happen to know please if the A-pillar trims are easy to remove, do they just pull off?

  7. Let's hope your mirror assembly stays back on,
Every time I'm bombing into tower on croft my whole assembly falls off in my face!

  8. ????

  9. Not hard to understand, but never mind, after I had that part of the car apart it doesn't seem to stay on like it used to anymore, hope yours does.

  10. Is there any possibility of upgrading it to one that detects speech better? because at anything over 40mph it can't understand anything i'm saying

  11. Ah, you assumed I was going to mount the microphone on the mirror..... I had never mentioned this, hence being hard to understand, but never mind, will probably find somewhere more local for it out of sight.

The A-pillar trim needs to come off though for a DAB radio aerial.
