R26 Moneypit bringing me down...

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by eddie ninja, Jul 25, 2017.

  1. So bought my '07 R26 in April. 53k miles. £4200.
Since then I've spent at least £2k getting it track worthy - i.e. not upgrading but just replacing/servicing.
Now it looks like the turbo has shat itself (on road not track) and from what I'm hearing that's another few hundred.
So I need somebody to tell me it's all going to be ok and I've not bought a lemon and one day I'll laugh at all this while sipping a pimms and lemonade while destroying Porsche boxters on sunny trackdays.
    Please? Anyone???

  2. Not me then... :frowning:

  5. Don't worry Eddie. All will be fine mate. I'm 4k into mine not including buying the bloody thing haha.

Put the pimms in fridge though till you get a new turbo core or 250 one

There are a lot of companies around that will do you an exchange turbo for not a lot of money, normally on an exchange basis, they send you a rebuilt one and you send your old one back after, i have done this and got a replacement in less than 24hrs, i got a variable vane turbo for my Espace 175 the next day for £280 ish, plus £50 surcharge refundable on return of the old unit, still comes with a years warranty.

I don't have a link, as i can't really remember who i purchased it from without going through my paperwork in the workshop.
All i did was google turbo repairers and asked for a price and availability,
I have used these before http://www.turboworks.co.uk/ http://www.theturbocentre.co.uk/ just phone around and ask.

The core i purchased was for a 250 turbo that i now have as a spare

In my eye if you're 2k in it's pointless getting rid now, stick with it.

  16. Yep - in too deep.

I users and the feeling and doubt though, my 175 cost me 3.5 over the 3 years I owned it.

  18. Greetings! If you need a cheap turbo, I could possibly help........I've got a standard R26 turbo with a Forge actuator sat in my spare room doing squat. Turbo happily ran 270 bhp on my 50k mile engine. Actuator has done less than 1500 miles. I'd happily accept £300 for the pair!

  19. Incidentally, on top of the purchase price, I've spanked over £8k on the bastard! Worth it?! Hell yeah!!! [emoji3] Love it!!!

  20. You think you're in too deep?! Try £8k on top of purchase! Worth it?! Fuck yeah!!! Keep with it!

  21. To you and some others I guess so but it's all personal. 8k over purchase price would get you a newer and generally all round better car......
I've heavily modified etc before and due to the places and people I met through it I don't regret it but to do it again, no way!

  22. Cheers but will take it to engine dynamics garage first to confirm turbo is fucked first. :-)

  23. Posted twice so £16k yes? Lol.
If I get close to putting in what I paid for it then that's when I might have to put a for sale ad on here ;-)

  24. Good call!

  25. Iv been very lucky with mine.
Had it 4months+, new tyres, brakes, link bars, service and its spot on. Im very capable with spanners which always helps with costs.
My understanding before I bought it, they need lots of continual little jobs, to maintain.

And then you would be spending money on that.

I do not total it up, its there for the enjoyment, how much is it to play golf, or sailing etc it's a hobby its going to cost

  30. For trackdays all you need is a couple of choice mods. Keeps it cheap and the component stress down.

Pile on more mods and just end up with later downstream failures or problems and an empty wallet.

When you end up with a £6K car with £6k of mods and only ever worth £6K when you try and flog makes you wonder why you don't buy a faster £12K car worth £12K.

  31. It is a matter of personal choice, spend you money, and enjoy. This is obviously something you would not do, and good for you, still does not mean that its not right for someone else.

  32. Very true. And choice allows the opportunity to have an opinion which isn't always just a back slapping endorsement.

A Meg 250 Cup with just a 310 bhp remap or the same £££ to mod an R26 with a forged 310 bhp, hybrid, decat, clutch and big brakes and suspension that would lap in about the same time but be worth much less? Less hassle with the car designed to do the job out of the factory.

Running an older track slag has some merit ......if you keep it cheap, but total write-offs on trackdays are very rare and still it costs the same to knock out or sort a bit of panel damage on both a cheap or more expensive motor.

  33. how does that matter to anyone, still got a hard on for mods i see.

  34. I think this is part of the problem for me. I'm not a modder or good with a spanner and I've come from bikes where I owned a 2010 zx6r from new which was track ready out of the crate and needed nothing doing to it.
I guess the car equivalent would be me buying a brand new Elise/Caterham/M3 etc etc. Which isn't going to happen. At least for me to stay married.
    Yea I know 1st world problems. :-)

  35. Keeping your car fairly standard, reliable, cheap to run and just enjoying it on trackdays isn't a problem, it's actually a great way to do things.

No need to join the trackday warriors, paddock posers or feel the pressure to fit those must have useless mods from the pseudo F1 racers.

  36. And........he's off ..lol

  37. fluid and pads are a must, the rest is personal choice, don't be put off by the negative opinion on here, if you want and can afford any mods, go for it, you don't need anyones approval. I know i wont get back what i've spent on mine, am i bothered, not one bit, i love how mine drives now, added bonus is its really upset the forum troll, win, win....LOL

  38. Well said, Sir!!! There's nothing wrong with making a good car better! As for the cost of it all....it's better than sticking it up your nose or trashing your liver, and at the end of it all, you've got something to show for it! Ok, you may never see a return on what you've invested, but at least you've created something better than the original!
