New RenaultSport Megane

  1. Basically they're doing what they've done with the MK3 Clio RS. Toning it down from hardcore to normality so that it sells better. Which is fair, but hopefully it can put up a good fight against that FK8 Civic

Im loving all this speculation and rumour spreading based on a few internet videos and photos, Keep up the good work LOL.

  3. You can't beat a bit of pre-match build up.

  4. Some will be adamant that their team performed badly post match even if it wins.

  5. It'll certainly be interesting to see what they do to market it. If they go after the ring record, it's got a pretty tough job on its hands with potentially less power than the Honda if current released specs are anything to go by.
I don't think (but wtf do I know) the rear steer is really going to do much for it beyond allowing them to run a softer setup but maintain the playful handling, at the same time that could suit the ring.

I watch, popcorn in hand. I'll never buy one but it'd be nice if it succeeded in some form.

  6. And some will think their team is the greatest even though they constantly lose.

Car forum? Different opinions, debate, that's the lifeblood. It's a shame you have a minority that can't articulate an opinion on a subject and only have the capability to criticise those that do.

With the MK4 Megane, I don't think a Ring record fail will be a big factor. The Mk3 is still getting ace reviews as a drivers car and more importantly as a combined package of looks, price, performance and raw and simple driving feedback. If Renault dumbs down those aspects then it's game over.

  7. Happy with reasoned debate, but there are a few that will be negative even if it's the best car ever to be produced. This always happens, usually from those that have relatively recently bought the outgoing model.
Its predetermined mind-sets like those that are the most difficult to fathom.

You, in particular, are a master of negative conjecture.
This is not a complaint, I just think without context it seems somewhat irrational.

Why so negative? Which recent Renault experience gives you such a bad vibe?
Where do you find your driving thrills at the moment that lead you to such huge expectation from a family hatchback?
Would you ever even buy one if it was the best car ever to be released?

  8. @Aerofoil i always read your posts time and time again and seen you get a lot of stick!

What car do you drive? And what experience do you have in the motoring world?

    Genuine questions. Not causing trouble.

  9. And there we go again........

Please see post #366, para 2.

  10. And the context?
Why are you unable to articulate your negativity/opinion/debate in a way that gives you some credibility?
I asked some relatively simple questions, but you appear unwilling to debate.
You are dilluting the lifeblood of the forum.

  11. As you wish. Interesting view from a infrequent forum poster.

  12. Nice swerve, but expected......lol

  13. So post # 366, para 2 doesn't actually matter if I have too few posts......................jeezo.
    As you were.

  14. You can't win with him - it's pointless trying.

I'm fine with Aerofoil having his opinions - perfectly entitled to of course - but I just wish you wouldn't state them, especially to newcomers to the forum, as though they are horned from years of your personal experience.

It's almost like your posts should come with a disclaimer:
"the views expressed herewith are not my own..."

Keep this on topic please, videos of other marks just as a filler or to provoke a response aren't needed.

    Thanks.

  16. I hired a new megane whilst in Portugal last week and it was very nice. It looks quite sporty as standard, the wife thought it was a sports version, I had a Diesel and it drove well, the interior was all solid and felt expensive (miles better than my r26 but that is old). So if this is the base and the RS model will be an improvement on this it should be a very good car.

  17. I think the big question is where they intend to pitch it. Will it be an ST/GTI rival, or an RS/Type-R rival? I wish they'd hurry up and tell us anyway!

  18. Or the worst combination, an ST rival with a Type R price tag.

  19. Are you in the market for a hot hatch?

  22. It is plain I can't get past that, needs to be in a stand out colour to me - to avoid looking like a Megane. White clearly doesn't help its cause. The leaked image of the rear of the LY mule made it look a lot better.

I think they could have done more with the rear spoiler and the rear end just looks like an amalgamation of the a45/scirocco/Ibiza fr- haven't decided whether that's a good thing yet!

I'm going to have a better nosey at it at the Frankfurt motor show to make up my mind

  23. I like 3 door cars so its not for me

  24. Looks good from the front and rear.
    Nice wheels.

Fairly plain side on, would definitely benefit from hidden door handles on the back doors.
This is a problem all five door hatches have.
Look at most side on, and you can't tell whether it's a 1.5 diesel or the top of the range A45, RS3, S3, Focus RS, BMW 140, Hyundai breadvan, etc, etc.

  25. The proportions aren't quite right on those images, front/rear wheel size etc so not a true pukka feel for the finished article but it's about there.

I reckon it's about the best they could do having been just given a 5 door GT and more bland than lairy which isn't a bad move.

  26. Think you'd need to see one in real life to make an informed assessment.

  27. Ps. But I think it looks quite cool and will probably still look nicer than a lot of the competition.

  29. No, but it's possible to spec the GT up to £30,650, or £31,950 for the diesel.

£33,500 for the Sport Tourer diesel :weary:

  30. Significant issue for Renault this. Can easily price themselves out of the market.

The other problem they have is most people buy (actually only ever rent) on finance, PCP etc now so the list price to a certain extent is not as important as it used to be ........ But Renault doesn't do great deals on the PCP people like to dribble over nowerdays, so it could end up as the double whammy.

They need the product to attract the premium. We will find out soon.

  31. You can usually add £3/4k of options to any car if you try. A Focus RS starts from around £32k, but you can get one up to £37k if you tick all the options. You can even make a Focus Titanium cost the best part of £30k. While Renault need to be cautious on pricing, if they are within £1000 or so of their rivals, I don't think it will make make huge odds.

As Aerofoil says, most people use PCP/leasing now, so the list price is much less important. Renault's poor residuals aren't helpful, but they didn't stop people from buying the last one. Don't know why he felt the need to have a dig at people who use PCP though. Maybe you can't get credit in exchange for Haribo and pocket fluff?

The interesting one for me at the moment is where exactly they choose to pitch the car. Is it going to be an ST/GTI rival, or an RS/Type-R one? I look forward to the reveal. My prediction is 290-310bhp and on-paper performance a little behind the Type-R. Then perhaps a Trophy style model at some point down the line that will go 'ring record chasing. Who knows though.

  32. its getting harder and harder to make a stand out hot hatch in the Megane's class, performance is close, handling is brilliant on all of them, price is similar ish, Ford people will buy the Ford, i'd be drawn towards the Renault, regardless of the ring time, it'll be a great car.

  33. Plenty of mileage in a PCP discussion massivefunbags, the Admin will be overheating their delete button if it's in here. Interesting enough, I see the BOE has issued further warnings today on consumer credit and in particular, the dangerous rise in PCP credit finance. Back on topic........

  34. It really is a tough market now and there isn't a bad car in it. They all have good and bad points, but we have never had so much choice in hot hatches, it's crazy. My last two car purchases have been bloody difficult to be honest. Ended up test driving loads of stuff and it was really hard to pick a winner. As you say, they are all pretty closely matched in reality.

Quite, but don't see the need to dig about it. It's amazing how upset people get by other people's financial choices, usually based on little understanding.

  35. don't forget, its just posted for someone to bite at, seems to be jealous of just about everyone/everything...LOL

  36. There's plenty of understanding and peoples financial choices are only part of it. It's also how the loans are sourced by institutions and manufacturers on the financial markets and how the risk is packaged and sold on. Remember subprime, Lehman Bros etc

  37. Anyway, back on topic.

Renault should be teasing out a bit more now that Frankfurt is getting closer. If the confidence is in the product, like it obviously was with the Alpine, their PR system should be gearing up for a bit more pumping.

  38. I get the point above on being able to add a few K to any car, but:

Clio 220 Trophy Max price: £22,095
Megane GT 205 Max price: £30,650
    Megane Sport Tourer max: £33,500
    Megane RS £???

Bear in mind that the higher level trim a car has, the more things it generally has as standard, so the less you have to add, where will the Mk4 Meagne RS fit in here? If it's near the GT then who is going to buy that? If it's a couple of grand above the Tourer, who's going to go for that, given as above a Focus can be had for max £37k. I don't understand Renault's pricing strategy here, admittedly without the knowledge of what the launch price will actually be.

Of course, I understand that these are list prices and nobody pays that, and I take the point that due to the awful PCP fiance system (I have 2!), that the list price has less relevance. Having said that, the monthly figure you pay is calculated from among other things, the vehicle sale price. My point is, for comparison, these numbers are still valid.

If Renault don't make it very special, it needs to be very cheap. I fear it'll be neither.

  39. I guess it partly depends on their trim levels too. I believe they are planning on doing a Cup chassis but, if they do a cut-price Cup model, that could get the entry-level price down. Then they could do a more fancy, higher spec model for more money.

I just wish they were a bit better at the PR game. Other manufacturers are pretty good at drip-feeding information and building up hype. Renault seem to be keeping everyone waiting.

  40. I think pricing is clearly important yes. Depending on how good it is they will price it accordingly, but let's be honest renault are always a little more competitive with their pricing compared to rivals that's why the current RS was such a good buy.

Read evos review of the new type r today, got 4.5 stars and they liked it a lot. Renault have some work to do!
