I will be replacing the stock rev counter/speedo unit of my car. It will be replaced by a unit with data logging features. (No, I do not wish a discussion about the usefulness of it.) A few questions: 1) how do I get the entire unit out? 2) will there be issues using the car without it (error messages, or is the immobiliser attached to it?) 3) when I reconnect it, will the car pick up the correct mileage (assuming that the mileage is stored elsewhere?) Appreciate any help!
1. Not sure 2. Yes I would expect there to be functional problems with other systems on the car as the CAN system is fairly integrated on the car 3. The mileage is stored elsewhere and the clocks will pick it up.
Thanks! Anyone able to confirm this? 2. Is a bugging me. Just sticking a display in front of the existing dash will look pants. 3. That's a relief! Don't want to have a huge fuzz when the normal clocks should go back in!
Maybe consider doing what some race cars which are converted from race cars do such as the old Gallardo Super Trodeo and leave the old dash wired in and just move it somewhere else. The cluster on the old Super Trofeo cars used to be taped under the dash top, no longer visible but still providing the required functionality.
As JamesBryan said, I assume it will be a similar setup to the Clio, the mileage is stored in the dial unit, not elsewhere.
Nope, you change your clocks, the clocks will update to the vechicles mileage. Folk on here have already swapped clocks and say this happens, plug n play.
Here's a quick clip of the MoTeC C185 I have installed on my Megane. The odometer reading definitely doesn't come from the current dash.
The actual installation is very simple as it's only four wires into the car; power, GND, CANH and CANL (plus wiring in the push button to change pages), and the C185 fits very nicely into the lower part of the centre console. I took power from the cigarette lighter and picked up CAN from the OBD. I have however wired these into a sub-loom under the dash to give me connections for other electronics I've added onto the car such as the shift light module. With the dash, a fair amount of time has been spent reverse engineering the CAN stream to give me all the signals though, so that part is very much not plug and play.

The clocks are plug and play. I removed my yellow 250 clocks and fitted the grey facelift clocks. When they were removed i started car fine and moved with no clocks in and when i refitted the different clocks the mileage remained the same if thats any help.

Yes the C185 has a 3 axis internal accelerometer, but I'm also logging the car's onboard 2 axis one. Logging is to the device's internal memoery as standard with Ethernet download, but there is the option of spec'ing removable USB logging.
