Replacing head-unit and speakers (MK3)

  1. I wanted to start a new thread for just replacing the head-unit and speakers but not adding any amps or subs etc.

The standard set-up is very poor therefore am going to just put a new head-unit and speakers in and keep the standard wiring.

I genuinely can’t tell if I have any tweeters in the dashboard therefore I presume not, but I definitely have speakers in the rear although they are very quiet even if the balance is turned fully to the rear.

I’ve found a nice head unit and will of course fit the aftermarket console trim to accept this. http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/hea...m-bluetooth-usb-dab-dab-spotify-stereo-aerial

First question please – there looks to be (from a separate thread) tweeters available that just pop in behind the grills and connect to the standard wiring (presuming I have it – but I will check beforehand), there therefore must be a cross-over somewhere in the system. If I fit an aftermarket head-unit and full-range speakers in the doors and rear how do I control the frequencies going to the tweeters? (If I fit them). Likewise, if I fit full-range in the doors, will they receive the full range of frequencies?

Second question please – I quite like the benefit of controlling the standard head unit with the stalk behind the steering wheel and also seeing the radio channels etc. on the display on the top of the dashboard. There look to be many different aftermarket adapters to hopefully retain some of these functions but will I be able to keep both the stalk control and the display??

Third question please – what size are the speakers in the front and rear and are they the same size? Are the speaker ring adapters needed in the rear as well as the front?

    Many thanks.

  2. The crossovers are built into the tweeters from experience. I fitted some pioneer tweeters which are specific for the older megane and clios, yet to fit the door speakers as the plugs are different but im making some adapter cables for them.

  3. Your wasting your time, the amps built into all headunit are not amazing, and the crappy thin wiring does not do it any favors, I would just stick to something like that spare wheel amp/sub that someone posted in the other thread

  4. Thanks, so effectively the tweeters receive the full range and then cut out the low-range frequencies themselves? So the door speakers play the full-range, but if tweeters are fitted in addition then they effectively duplicate the high-range that the door speakers are already playing?

  5. im assuming so yeh, theres some sort of electronics on them, that i havent seen on a tweeter from a component set. The speakers could also have filters on them to filter out high frequencies? I cant really say im sure. Tbf.

  6. Thanks, that makes sense. Component tweeters (and main drivers) will effectively play the full range without a crossover fitted somewhere, whereas the tweeters with the ‘electronics’ on them have the filter built-in. So likewise there may be door speakers with built-in filters to cut out the high-range. I don’t suppose it hurts having the tweeters duplicating the high range that the full-range door speakers play as most of the high-range coming out of the door speakers is directed straight at your legs, whereas the tweeters will fire at the windscreen and then to your ears.

  7. Any help on my other questions:

Second question please – I quite like the benefit of controlling the standard head unit with the stalk behind the steering wheel and also seeing the radio channels etc. on the display on the top of the dashboard. 8. Yes you can retain full headunit control from the stalk as i do with my pioneer unit, it costs almost as much as the headunit but no you can't retain the use of the display, sadly.

you'll need a fascia as well, the bluetooth is part of the OE headunit so you can't use renaults built in mic, i also found i could no longer use the USB / Aux ports below the console although i didn't look into this much

Size is 5.25 / 13cm for fronts, i think it's the same for the rear, they are held in with rivets.

  12. Do I need speaker rings in either the front or rear??

  13. Not sure, i had a pro fit mine as i had a sub and amp in the boot, front speakers powered off the amp also.
