5 turbos where everywhere at the time. shitty pushrod engine from the arc,with turbo bolted on. bodywork you could dent with 1 finger. door handles that came off in your hands. open the bonnet to find 50 meters of rubber plumbing!..couldn't even see the fkn engine..which constantly overheated in traffic. only went quick because it weighed nothing due to be built from baked bean tins.

No doubt they were fast I don't think anyone kept them standard, the 2 I knew of back in the day both had money chucked at them on tuning. The light weight and turbo motor attracted lads who wanted to go down that route. Both of those cars rocket ships, when they worked. Its a shame in a sense as it also meant really nicely maintained standard cars must have become rare pretty quickly. Hot hatch of the year 2007 by a big margin.

Nice solid silver 76000 miler one on the bay for £3750. You could shake on £3500, drive home with a big grin. It's where the clever money goes.
Id have to check it over if thats cheap...there must be a reason or they dont have a clue how to value a car for sale. Theyre losing a good couple of grand there. Belts,discs,tyres,trackrods etc.
The silver one looks like a good buy if it's in good condition. Does need belts as mentioned in the add, but still reasonable. They're after a quick sale too. As for the yellow one at £3400, that's dodgy as hell!! I suspect someone has stolen the original advert or something. It was for sale when I was looking a few months back and it was up at £6.5k if I remember correctly.

still £5700..the going rate . My own R26 is possibly one of the lowest mileage examples in the country on 40k. Still needed both swivel bearings,new doors handles(peeling),new xenon light(blistered paint internally..common problem),actuator rebuild,full brake refresh and will need a clutch and flywheel very soon..all that this year alone...Big money. They are just getting to that age, where you will have to check everything, if you are on the hunt.
i speak nothing but the truth.. I had a mk1 RS Turbo at the time..Fords flagship model built in Germany,before cosworths existed. The difference in build quality between the 2 similar performance cars was pure comedy.
I don't think the 5 has ever claimed to be anything it's not. It held its own with most other cars on the road at the time (including the aforementioned, more expensive, escort rs turbo). The comparison you've made is like putting the latest renault sport Clio up against the latest rs focus.
I would define a classic as a example people had a taste of when younger, or an aspiration to have as they had the poorer relation of, or the 'it' people had (ie rs2000, Mexico, Capri 3ltr [I had a gear x], or the 2.8i, xr2, etc etc). Was the megane a people's car and the rs a dream of many? No. Was the rs a wide spread popular 'hot hatch' ? No. So I think it will remain an underrated (pain in the arse) French car that gave great smiles per £ but never took the market by storm. Shame. I love my car for the fun it brings me. And the fact it stands out as they were never hugely popular.
That ain't too bad I reckon. Strip out the optional cosmetic stuff, future stuff you haven't done and consumables and all it was was a couple swivels and an actuator. If you want to keep them mint, sure, but they can also be run on the cheap.
Mine cost £3500 with 113k on the clock. There's hardly a rattle in it, its feels very solid, the engine is lovely and smooth, last MoT had no advisories, fsh and it flies. Love it, especially for the money. Also has cooksports, quickshift, Stage 1 map, CAI, uprated intercooler, decat, etc. Issues so far: Wiring in the dash for the radio that someone bodged (£50 fix) and stuck caliper pins.
Not sure if its 'underrated' ....it received wide acclaim at the time,in all the reviews - with hot hatch of the year awards etc. Its probably more 'unknown' to the average buyer,who only know the Fiesta ST/Corsa VXR's of this world. People probably just think its a normal Megane with stickers,as they werent around the time of its inception.
It just got eclipsed with all the hype around the R26R. Even EVO magazine,who raved about it at the time,have`stickers in dubious taste` on there R26 summary, in the hot hatch review section ..hardly relevant to a cars ability when i tell people i drive a R26,no one ever knows what it is.
always a huge saving. try taking the car to Renault and see what a belt change and swivel bearings would cost you. they would just fit new hubs.
This. I was vaguely aware of the r26r partly because a mate had hired one at the 'ring. Way i found out about the r26 was googling best trackday cars under £5k - true story.
For as long as they've existed, Iv been aware of them and had admiration. I nearly bought 1 a few years back but it was rough so went Type R route. Im surprised you guys are saying they are not that well known. Kinda makes me like it even more.
From an outsiders point of view...eg the Ford/Vauxhall brigade. But anyone into hot hatches should know what an R26 is really..
Very few (almost no) people in the UK, even petrolheads, will know what a R26 is, if that's the only info you mention to them. The petrolheads will acknowledge what it is when you explain, but the rest will scoff at an old Renault. I had the same thing with a Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo - people couldn't get past the Fiat badge. People in the UK crave old Fords and this is why they command the money they do. This obviously has an impact on the values of all the other cars in this sector of the used car market, because there will always be a finite amount of money available at any one time, and the shit old Fords take more than their share. Classic status is validated by public perception; 5 GT Turbos, even now have that, but I'm not sure the R26 will ever achieve the same here.
There's also a new trend of older car speculation going on. Feck all money to be made in the Building Society or in a house anymore, so can I buy any old rare motor or one with an engine they don't make anymore and make some money on it. Herd instinct. Cyclic market. Overvalued tat. Burnt fingers.
