R26 What is this noise?! Local mechanic clueless!

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by jpmad4it, Mar 7, 2017.

  1. Hi there,

Has anyone got any idea what this noise could be (see video links below)? It was only happening on full lock but now it seems to be doing it most of the time. It's usually much worse when moving the steering wheel when the car is stationary. I'm waggling the wheel side to side to get the clunking noise in the videos. It sounds like it's behind the dash, low down. I'm also getting same rattle / clunk when driving slowly over bumpy surfaces, and when using the clutch and brakes. I'm also getting a vibration in the pedals too. Can anyone help?

Mark @ Midlands Renault checked the car over a while back (probably 4 months ago). I've had the following work done: new shocks, a new ball joint, powerflex bushes in the wishbones, new inner steering rack bush (the small plastic white one), new inner steering arm, and a new top gearbox mount (underneath the battery). After that there was nothing spotted with the suspension, steering components, hub bearings seemed fine, and the driveshafts / CV joints seemed ok.

Can anyone think what this could be? My local mechanic can't find where it's coming from!

Many thanks in advance. Video links below.

  2. Sounds like some kind of motor jamming

  3. The second video is with the car turned off. I'm thinking the bulk head where it connects to the the rack or the universal joint on the column?

  4. That's very strange! You had any luck?

  5. It's in the garage. With waggling the steering wheel so much I think I buggered up the steering wheel lock unit, and the car wouldn't start. I think its a known issue. Keep getting the messages of "steering wheel locked" when trying to start the car and "steering wheel unlocked" when I take the card out. It basically doing what it should but backwards !!

So once they've fixed that, they will have a look at the problem with the steering :worried:

  6. Ah that's a bit shit but at least it's getting sorted and hopefully you find that other issue. Keep the thread up to date I'd like to hear what it is

  7. Starter motor. Was quoted £750 - gearbox and engine out to change it

Been quoted £250 somewhere else by someone who knows what they're doing. Will bump start it and get it over there when I can.

And hopefully get the other issue sorted at the same time.

  8. Yeah that's a joke mate. I'd have done it myself for you if you weren't far away. I think an exchange motor is like £100 and no more than £100 to fit it. I changed mine not long back

  9. Ah cheers man, I've got it booked in at Midlands Renault. He's gonna do it and look at steering at the same time.

Did you get this sorted mate? Think I'm having same issue. Mine bangs when I use clutch changing gears. Also if I'm on and off clutch and gas making car kangaroo, it does it. Bumps when on full lock. Mine sounds like its coming from behind the pedals somewhere.

  11. The noise in waggling the wheel was just a dry CV joint - had no grease in it !

I've got another rattle which you describe, Mark said it was the engine banging about so I guess its engine mounts / gearbox mounts

I've got one last mount to change. That's the one under the battery. Doing it this weekend so I'll let you know if it's fixed the problem, if you want. Thought I'd do the cheap jobs first that I could do myself before taking it to a garage to have shocks changed etc.

  13. Yes please that would be great, any info on how to solve it is appreciated. Mine sounds horrific when i'm travelling slowly over bumps. Sounds like something is gonna fall out and it cant be doing the rest of the engine any good.

I did the main top mount near the coolant holder but that didn't solve it. How many are there in total? I know there is another top mount slightly behind the one I mentioned above, but that's where my knowledge ends !!

I reckon it could be the gearbox mounts. I've had the one under battery done, but unfortunately it didn't solve it for me. Mark said that 99% of the time that is the one which just perishes. Mine wasn't even there !!!

there's the one next to the timing belt, the one just up from there. One under the battery and one under the car. I've just one left to do and all the others have been absolutely ruined so my hopes have been built up and shattered 3 times now! Ha.

  15. Cool - so I've had 2 done so far. Might be worth me getting them done along with the gearbox ones. Mine is 10 yrs old now so they're bound to be wrecked!! Lets hope this one is the one which fixes it for you!

  16. Hey how did you get on?

    not cured.
Took it to 2 garages today. One got under it and said ball joint etc all felt brand new. One said ball joint as soon as he heard the noise but put it over the pit and used some machine to shake the front end all over the place. He said everything looked good. I was driving mine today at 30 in 4th, just cruising and when I tapped the pedal, it was making the noise then. Is yours the same?

  18. That's crap.

Mine rattles at low speed when I'm using the clutch and brakes.

Also rattles like mad when driving over bumpy ground at low speeds. Usually under 20mph ish.

Did you get the last mount changed?

Yeah done them all now. I'll upload the video I did today of the noise. The sound isn't great though.

  20. Ok cool I'll check it out

Sound will need turning right up. This is driving in 4th at 30mph and pressing accelerator on and off.

  22. Did you check the lower swivel bearing, when they get rusty inside they tend to have some play before they get stiff and stop the steering centering itself.
Mine needs doing and that what i have as symptoms, also i get a squeaking steering when turning at very slow speed, it sound likes its inside the car but i know my swivel bearing are the cause.

  23. Are you speeding up and slowing down in the video? I think its to do with one of the mounts - have you had all gearbox mounts done?

I've had my swivel / hub bearings done - my steering still self-centres (just about) so I don't think it those.

  24. I've got some vids I'll upload tomorrow when I'm at work

It's knocking when I pull on it and the rubber is ruined. Getting one tomorrow so will let you know.
