Whenever I get in to the vvt in my 265, the battery charging fault light comes on and the stop sign flashes and goes off. It's under warranty but I don't fancy leaving it with them for 2-3 weeks whilst they ponder over what it could be. Is there an easy fix or am I going to have to admit defeat and leave it with them?
I get it occasionally too. If I've overtaken or just accelerated hard it'll flash up 'Battery charging fault' and then disappear. Although it doesn't seem to be consistent, leaving me to think it's a dodgy connection maybe? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Not sure if it's the same thing, but my wife previously had a Megane Mk3 (non-sport) and she had intermittently the same fault as you. The alternator was replaced once under warranty, the second went less than 6 months later and just out of the car's 3 year warranty so as it was a replacement installed under the car's 3 year warranty it's warranty also expired with the car's at 3 years. After a big argument with Renault it was replaced and then the same fault reappeared within 4 months. After threatening to drive the car through the dealer's front window if they told me it needed another alternator, they eventually traced it to a corroded ground strap. This was the problem from day one in my opinion, but the dealer (Holden Renault in Norwich) was too incompetent to find it. It might be worth checking the ground straps in the engine bay for signs of corrosion.
Resurrecting this thread as my 250 has started to do this. I've checked the alternator output and it's putting out upto 17 volts. I've replaced the voltage regulator today and still getting the same output. When I watch the meter I sometimes get 14.30v then it rises upto 17.30v. I'm not getting any volt drop from the engine to battery negative post so I don't believe it is a ground issue. The warnings I'm getting are battery charging fault battery light on abs warning on and check vehicle light are on. The fault will sometimes go out and I have no warnings at all but the alternator is still charging at 17v. What did others find when they had this issue? The battery was new in June last year too. 17v is way to hi something not quite right there, just for ref did you change voltage reg while alternator on car or did take off ??
Hi mate I've sorted it now it was poor contacts in the engine bay fuse box. I did it with the alternator in place. Removed the top boost hose and engine mount to give me enough access. Still a pig of a job though. Now back to charging at 14.5v.
So just to further update this the fault re occurred this morning. I have 100% fixed it this time. The wire from the alternator to the engine fuse box had rubbed through on the back of the headlight and water had started to corroded the wire. This explained how it was flashing on and off randomly. 1 tiny pull on the wire and it snapped. 1 wiring repair later and it's good as new again. Can enjoy it again now instead of it being a headache haha.
