Sticky gearbox in neutral

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Meganehan, May 25, 2017.

  1. Hi I'm not sure if this is normal, when I go to put my car from 6th or 5th into 3rd or 4th the gearstick doesn't seem to go to the center easily and when I have it in neutral and push to either side it seems to stick a bit? I have a Megane 230f1, thanks!

  2. I had this problem and was recommended to fit a short shift and change gearbox oil . . . not got round to fitting the short shift yet but I'll let you know when I do.

Gearbox oil is easy to do.

  3. ok thanks, yea I've been reading into this on the forum and sounds like it's def worth doing that short shift mod whilst it's getting fixed so il look into to doing that soon, cheers!

  4. There is a nylon bush on the gear box actuator which you will need to drill out to about 10mm which will sort your stiff selector as it swells of time and age with the heat from the engine...after you have done this it will be fine:tonguewink:

  5. Take the battery tray out and file and grease the nylon bush on the selector. I put new bolts in because the old ones were rusted so it shouldn't be too difficult! [emoji16]

  6. So you take the nylon bush out and bore the centre of the bush to 10mm?

  8. Yep mate ...then grease it up and check for freeness of movement and if still a little stiff drill out just a little more like I had to....and mine was sorted[emoji106]

  10. When taking the selector out make sure the box is in neutral and remove the bolts on top of it and the one on the side which can be tricky to find...but look on the guide on the site forum as it helps you to find it mate...bit of a fiddle but once you have done it it is pretty simple [emoji6]

  11. Just run a gentle file through it to loosen it up a tad. They get clogged with grime and when they get warm it makes the shifter stiff

  12. Ok thanks, I haven't got a clue how to do it myself but il find someone to sort it with ur tips lol! Apart from that car is spot on! Where can you buy the short shift from?

  13. Glad you're enjoying her and she's behaving well! Engine dynamics do one for about £70 and I'm sure ktec sell them too

  14. ok cheers, il have to look and see if there anywhere local to get it done. Yea tho that gap between the bonnet and the bumper doing my head in lol!

  15. Yeah they're notorious for dropping, I did try and sort it a few times but gave up in the end. All of the clips were in place but it never seemed to pull the drivers side up high enough. You could probably do the selector at home if you have some tools. Either that or it's an hour at a garage give or take.

  16. Ok cheers il look into it. Yea I took it to a body shop and they said they would need a whole day to look at it and take the front bumper off which would cost a fortune! Did it happen after the lights were changed?

  17. No it's always been like it. Me and kev took the whole front end off to see if we could sort it out but everything is as it should be. If you look at other ones they're all pretty much the same unfortunately. Even my new one has some interesting panel gaps! The only thing I could think of doing was getting a cable tie to try and pull that front corner up and hope the rest followed?

think it happened when he rear ended a police car when he was being chased. wasnt it @ghosty0101

  19. Of course! So bad they wrote it off twice! I rebuilt it after it went through the crusher though!

  20. yea I thought it was something like that lol! I did look at doing that but the headlights wouldn't move up with it so then there would be a new cap around them instead, I was actually thinking of putting a bonnet bra on it to cover it a bit but I'm not sure they suit it really...

  21. if you buy it for ktec, you will get a entire new actuator as well,so you wont have to drill out your existing mechanism .
Boardy was doing the shortshift on here, dont know if hes still doing them.
DO NOT buy the engine dynamics short shift actuator...its to light, and wont work right on a phase 2 car like yours.

  22. yep ok that sounds good thanks.

  24. Yea I'm not keen but can't think how I can disguise the uneven gap between my bumper and bonnet..
