One last issue!

After an annoying few months of window troubles, abs sensor problems and new brakes I'm just one problem away from driving a 100% fit and healthy 225.

When I set off and press clutch to change to 2nd, there's a knock. There's the same knock but repeatedly when I drive over rough ground like cobbled roads and also if I quickly press and let off the accelerator pedal and make the car kangaroo, sort of. The knock seems to be coming from the back of the engine, around the lower part, ie behind my pedals. While accelerating, there's no knock. It's just when I let off, as if the engine is moving back when the tension from acceleration has stopped and the engine or something else is knocking against the car.

  2. There's like a stabiliser mount/ torque reaction link on them that's prone to failure. Rubber will have gone, it's not an expensive or hard fix though

You're an absolute star. Got the part in stock near me for 20 odd quid so will have a go at it tomorrow. Thanks a lot.

Changed that but it's still there. The engine has stopped rattling on start up but something still sounds loose somewhere more to the drivers side. What would you check next? Steering rack inner arm has been done. Could one of my shocks be knackered?

What does the top mount at the back look like?

The one that looks similar to the one I replaced today, can I remove that without having to Jack the engine up?
I know the one to the drivers side needs engine supporting.

i think you might be able but not to sure

I've been out and tried rocking the engine and it feels solid. I've watched a couple of YouTube videos and supporting the engine looks simple. I'll take the mount off tomorrow and have a look at it. Will replace it Monday if it's hammered.

  15. The attributes would link it to a mount. I wouldn't put it down to a suspension/geometry/steering component personally but stranger things have happened.

I'd be inclined to stick with the engine/gearbox mount hunt

Will do mate. They're all really cheap as well, which is a bonus, if that is the issue.
    Really appreciate your help.

  17. That would be one of the suspension link bars, the lower bar link went on my clio 197 and did exactly as your describing. Easy to test it will very loose if gone.

  18. They're cheap and there's no harm in replacing them if any are worn, they're easily accessible too and no fancy tools required.

Ryan seems to have more experience with the issue though so sounds like he can point you in the right direction

I'm a bit retarded when it comes to cars mate. How do I test this?

  21. Just grab it in the middle and try moving it, should be quite stiff, if its relly loose, the ball joints have gone.

Taken top mount off. Have posted a video. Does it look worn?

Everything feels really solid mate. I've grabbed every bar, rubber and Bolt and nothing is moving.

I'll change that tomorrow then and hopefully never have to speak to you again! Meant in the nicest way possible!

  29. Gearbox as Matt says under the battery tray

So remove battery and tray? Does engine need supporting or anything like that or just remove bolts and replace?

  31. Yeah support this side mate as it's the only gearbox mounting and there's vital pipe work and wiring connected. Just support it and if I'm correct I think it's 4 x 16mm head bolts but I have a feeling at least one of them is a bit of a fiddle I can't remember

2 bolts and 1 nut on the main spindle, be careful when you undo the 2 on the mount the bolts can drop out the bottom

Changed 3 of the 4 mounts so far with just the gearbox one to do this weekend. To be honest, I'm not feeling confident it's gonna solve the problem now.
What should be next on my list of things to look at?

    This was the offending item!
Just finished replacing it now. What a difference it's made.
    Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
