Recon Driveshafts . . . any other way??

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by richmeg, Apr 29, 2017.

  1. So I replaced both my driveshafts not many miles ago (less then 10k) and already passenger side is leaking oil and there is the notorious clicking coming from the CV on the drivers side.

I know you can replace the oil seal on the passenger side but is there any way of replacing the CV on drivers side without replacing the whole shaft??

I'm spending enough on other areas of the car . . . could do without shelling out for another 'new' driveshaft, plus I'm reluctant since these recon shafts are not the best it seems.

    Thanks,

    Rich

  2. Mate, I had this issue for ages. No one seems to be able to get the bits like CV joint etc. There are companies that refurb CV joints by regrinding them. Looking at £90 per joint though...

  3. Did you not get a warranty on the recon shafts? Just a thought.

  4. What are the tell tale signs of a knackered CV joint mate?

  5. Knocking like the rent man on any kind of steering lock while moving forwards or backwards

  6. Expensive fix?

  7. £500 minimum for a shaft from Renault.

  8. I bought a cv joint for my R26 last week from GSF car parts. Cost £40.
The only difference is that the new cv joint has a 6 bearing race but the original Renault one has 8.

  9. Renault sell recon shafts though, for about half this amount.

When I inquired they said nobody bought new shafts.

  10. This sounds interesting . . . is it easy to replace the CV and assume the shaft must be off completely?

  11. I think there was a 12 month warranty but I was just outside . . . I bought the shafts from Renault Parts Direct for around £150-180 . . .

  12. Sorry, are we talking about a mk3 here or a mk2?

  13. Mk2

  14. Yes the shaft comes out. Thats the hardest part. When you have the shaft out and on the bench just hit the back of the cv joint with a hammer and it should pop off. Its only held on by a small circlip type ring.
Just a tip when fitting the new joint- when putting on the large cv boot clip. When you squeeze the clip tight make sure the little bit you squeeze is as flat as possible (you may need to squeeze it tight and hit it a little tap down to flatten it)
The reason is because when you refit the shaft there is very little clearance between this clip on the cv joint and the hub. It will catch the hub if not flat.
    Hope you get it sorted.

  15. Just buy a new joint and diy replace it.... Loads of places stock mk2 joints.

  16. Thanks a lot buddy this has been a great help/money saver . . . I couldn't find a CV joint on GSF's site though. If not I'll get the one from Mister Auto.

  17. Yeah this is my plan now . . . although not finding loads of places that stock the joints for MK2 225, I'm assuming a normal Megane CV is no good. I did find this;

    Just knowing whether it's a good quality part . . .

  18. Perfect . . . found one on Ebay . . .

    Thanks again!

  19. Does it fit? GSP 899213 is for 2.0 16V Turbo (120 kW) according to GSP's catalogue.

  20. I think Mark has already fitted one buddy see his earlier post . . . it has 6 bearings instead of 8 but dimensions are all the same.

    Fitting mine this week . . .

  21. Hope it comes off ok.

Had to do one on the wife's car and it didn't tap off. Didn't press off either.

Has to cut it off, outside race then inside race and finish with a cold chisel. PITFA!

  22. Yes it fits

  23. Mark I had a call from my Mechanic today and the GSP CV doesn't fit?? Is yours a 225 or r26?

    On the upside the other CV I ordered below which was only £20 off Ebay did so I've ordered another one of these;
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/132186379030

  24. Mines an r26.
    Strange that it didn't fit??

    Glad you got sorted anyway

  25. Do you guys know how to check which cv joint will fit my 225 phase I without disassembling it?

I read this thread and see that Mark bought CV for 2.0T and it fitted but it wasn't good for a 225 Cup.

  26. The one I ordered above (JR Trading) fitted my Phase 1 225 Cup . . .

  27. I found something interesting. CV joint from Laguna III 1.5 dCi fits 225 Phase 1. There are only tiny differences in diameters.
