New 250 Cup Owner in Surrey

Discussion in 'New to the Club? Why not introduce yourself?' started by Mark_RS, Jan 30, 2017.

  1. Will post some filthy photos at the weekend, unfortunately I leave at 07:30 and get home at 18:00 so I don't get a chance to work on it, or take photos!, until the weekend when I then have to juggle this with Dad duties and all the other house stuff.

Thanks re the cooler advice, I will end up going with whatever comes in black!

Blimey, you're going to town! For the time being at least I'm happy with the road Cup suspension, will revisit once I've been on track though no doubt...!

Brands is only 45 mins drive for me and I love the track so just keeping going there, Snetterton isn't too far a drive and a great track but I just prefer Brands more.

We'll have to coincide a day in the summer, I just go to the MSV days as they're really well run.

  2. I'll be back in the rat race soon enough working in London. I'm leaving one job at the moment and have also been working at home so time is on my side (hence the rush to do things).

Let me know which cooler you go for and I'll report back on how the Wagner performs. I don't do things by half, I actually think the Cup damping is too hard (I must be getting old) and a local guy Intermotiv is EPIC for suspension work and has offered Clubsports fitted with full pro setup for £2k, I wouldn't take my car anywhere else now.

How about the 19 of April for an evening at Brands? £139. It's about 45 minutes from me aswell and I do love the track.

  3. Well good luck with regards the job move.

Will do. I think the damping is spot-on for "fast-road" and therefore will actually be perfect for track where actually you don't want the hardest lowest well cool init suspension. Obviously I haven't taken it out on track yet so will reserve my rights to change my mind in due course.

Thanks for the invite, but evenings are a no at the mo with needing/wanting to help bath/feed/put to bed my two young boys. I will just take a day off work and do a full day with my track-buddy at some point once I've had the work done. Will let you know as soon as I do.

  4. Nice to see another C63 owner, there seems to be a few on this forum.....I've got a pre facelift C63 that I used on a few track days. I had a set of wheels with R888R's on which transformed it on the track. I cant use it anymore because it won't pass noise restrictions lol
I'm in Hampshire so I might see you around at some track days :sunglasses:

  5. Thanks Mark, hopefully it's a good move..onwards and upwards (or slightly sideways) and all that!

I'm still getting to grips with the handling of the car, I'm not sure the Pilot Sport 4s are that good up front and the Sport 3s on the rear have seen better days. I might get the tracking checked aswell? Like you though it might see a track before the Clubsports go on (obviously the CS will wipe the floor with the stock setup).

No worries on track days, the invite is always there

  6. Evening  How long have you had your 63? Exactly what I did last year, used the 507 rims and stuck R888R's on there which really gave the car abilities. I opted for the bloody expensive valved FI exhaust with race cats which means I can get on any track (90db closed, 109 open).

I'll be at Brands in April then the Ring in June and god knows what else. Let me know what you plan to do and we can hopefully join a few days.

  7. I've had it for over a year, it ticks a lot of boxes and I can't get enough of the noise. It's definitely a hooligan.
I've had fitted a Quaife LSD, H&R coilovers, black AMG 19's and remapped. I looked at an FI exhaust but ended up going with a full IPE with headers, sports cats and valve rear section, when I bought the Megane I had the standard Rear section put back on and the resonator welded back in. I hated losing the cold start bark and I wasn't that keen on the sound, now it's perfect but very loud. I started it in the garage one morning when my dad was there and he said it was like a shotgun going off lol

  8. Good man, we probably bought them around the same time. I had intended to buy an A45 (after testing a Megane Trophy strangely enough) but MB World had one of the last off the line 507s and I knew it was the car to have...absolute hooligan.

I bet it's running decent power with the headers etc? Mine was dyno'd at 521hp with the Pro Dry filters, exhaust and remap. There's still a part of me wanting to go Weistec stage 2 but I can't quite get my head round the cost..unusual for me. Gotta love the AMG bark, nothing on this earth like it.

me at 10 seconds in

Those are about the only videos outside my car!

  9. I haven't got round to getting mine on the rollers but it should be pushing 530-540bhp. I looked at some 507's but it was too much of a stretch for me. A little while ago I met up with four other C63 owners through the MB Club forum and we did a few runs through the hindhead tunnel......it was deafening lol

  11. Looks superb! Thanks for sharing

  12. Good looking cars guys!! It still makes me chuckle to think they put a 6.2 in a 'small' family four-door!! One of the best sounding cars I have heard on track!

  13. Ok I have a question...power delivery? The power delivery in my car seems a little odd. I floor it from a low speed in say 3rd and it takes a second to start picking up then it starts to move (quick ish) then really starts to move (turbo clearly making itself known). Is this normal? Am I just not used to turbo cars these days? The power curve for my car feels like a bit of a step not a floor it, boost builds and that's it.

    Happy weekend

  14. I hadn't noticed it myself, but will look for it when I'm next out. I've Bluefinned it though, so this may have irradicated or amplified it though. It's going in for a full belt service and check over soon and will be put on the dyno to check that the fueling etc is ok, it may be that it gets a bespoke map which will override the Bluefin, anyway will let you know re fueling and boost then.

On a side note, I've ordered the same headlights as you, thanks for the links!!

  15. Hopefully it's just me not being used to turbo cars (it's been a while). I know everyone is different but I don't like the thought of a generic 'map' for a car, I'd really want you to get a bespoke one done for your engine. Plus it would be interesting to see just what the Bluefin setup is like. I'm going to stick the ODB2 on the car tomorrow and Torque Pro monitor a few bits I think.

On a side note, excellent  Hope you like them and you'll probably have them fitted before I get my second one!! Oh well...

  16. Apologies for my shoddy spelling before, hopefully all now corrected.

Well no doubt I'll end up getting a bespoke map as inevitably the guy will find problems with the generic Bluefin Stage 1 (he has already with a Stage 2 he's seen) but he's going to show me all the results and logs so I hopefully will know he's not just trying a fast one.

Other than the full service he's going to fit a Scorpion cat-back exhaust (free-fitting so thought why not!).

I'm tempted with your same Wagner black intercooler but budgeted pennies are a bit short (as I'm likely going for the PFC V3 bell & rotor set-up along with all new pads, rear discs, hoses, fluid etc) therefore one way of saving a little money would be to fit it myself, as you did. Did you have any issues, or things you didn't expect to have to do, were the instructions easy to follow etc. etc. And obviously would you recommend doing it yourself?

Would be good to get this fitted myself before it has a bespoke may you see...

  17. Most people in this life prefer their own work to that of others don't they? If it's backed with actual data though...

My car came with a Scorpion, it was rather quiet! I was easily convinced to get the KTR system as apparently the cat on these cars is very restrictive and didn't want the bother of MOT woes so turbo back with sports cat it was. Free fitting though isn't bad! Hopefully they don't take the approach of it not having value to them when they get under your car (I'm naturally negative...can you tell?).

Can you tell me how much you're paying for the bell and rotor setup? Is that enlarged discs with a relocator for the caliper? I use Hi-Spec down this way for two piece setups and they're pretty keen on pricing. As for the Wagner, removal of the front bumper was easy, I just followed the Forge intercooler fitting instructions. Removal of the stock cooler was a bit annoying as they don't have jubilee connectors, RS have used click/lock type connectors so it was hard for me to get them free and then wiggle out the pipework. Fitting the Wagner was a slight pain on the pipework (for reasons stated) but then easy enough, nothing to mod/tweak at all, it just bolted straight on.

I'm itching for the next mod now. Wheels and track rubber or CAE?

  18. Exactly and hence why I do my own decorating!! Let’s see…..

Is it the non-resonated version, i.e. with no centre-box? I was a bit 50/50 about going for a cat-back when I’ve already removed my centre-box on the standard system. But the Scorpion back-box is meant to be much smaller, plus the added diameter versus standard should improve the noise surely!?

It’s free fitting if done at the same time as the service while the car is up on the ramps. Likewise a ‘discount’ on fitting the brake hoses while they do the service and flush the system anyway. Nothing wrong with being naturally negative, my wife is, as I’m too trusting sometimes.

I’ll let you know as soon as I do. They’re 348mm, as opposed the 340mm standard. PFC supply spacers as part of the kit and the standard bolts are apparently plenty long enough.

Great, thanks, may end up giving it a go, sounds like a straightforward, but fiddly job. Rather than one where you have to start drilling and cutting lots of bits that inevitably go wrong. Did you get yours from Ktec?

Wheels and track rubber definitely!! Stop this stilly obsession with the CAE, it will spoil your lovely car. Obviously not an issue if you were stripping it and turning it into a track-monster, but it would look silly popping down to B&Q……

There is an article in this month’s EVO on Ktec’s big power Megane (which they really liked) but interestingly they wrote that they preferred the standard suspension (presumably Cup) over Ktecs uprated suspension. So my point is, upgrade the power, brakes and keep the aesthetics OEM+, but don’t change the suspension or the GEARSTICK!!

  19. Hi the lights look good with the black highlights looking to purchase are you happy with the quality they certainly look the business

  20. Evening Jon,

Yes the quality in my opinion is excellent, direct replacement in every respect for OEM. I've had Depo before and they held up perfectly over a number of years so go for it!

  21. On the exhuast...pass, I don't know what it was but it wasn't that loud (well noticeable to me anyway). I don't think any of the exhausts on the Meg are known to be that loud are they?

I think getting all the brake work done would appeal to me more than free fitting on an exhaust? Probably makes no sense at all that

On the brake sizes, I think I'll have a word with Hi-Spec at the right time and see what they can do for me and stay stock size...lighter that way too!

And onto the intercooler...I bought it direct from Wagner UK, arrived in 3 days and they've been very helpful over email with me pestering them about stickers haha.

Wheels and rubber, I know you're right but I disagree..I'm a complete tart and want that silly shifter in my life so I feel like a rally hero when I pop down the train station carpark

I'll check out Evo, that's one of the better mags these days. I wonder if they had the Nitron nutter bastard dampers on there?

  22. Great cheers

  23. May be you have the resonated (with centre-box) version), regardless, it’s not a huge amount and I may as well take advantage of the free fitting and then I have the cat-back for when/if I ever want to put a sports-cat on.

I'm almost certainly possibly more than likely to get the PFC V3’s; they're only 8mm bigger, so nothing to worry about weight-wise.

A-ha, good idea and presumably cheaper, will take a look on their site. I’ve already contacted Airtec and Forge, am just trying to find out the different volumes and direct-prices. Forge have said they will powder-coat their cooler for me for only £25 extra….!! But is it worth it over the Wagner/Airtec???? I will report back on prices/volumes when ii have everything.

Well hopefully you’ll be broke by the time you’ve bought the wheels 7 tyres and won’t have any left for the silly shifter….!!

As for EVO, it’s the only one I read, unless I pick something else up at an airport, I can’t recall which dampers Ktec had fitted but EVO said they preferred the stock set-up.

  24. I’ve just ordered a Wagner intercooler!!!!! It looks a really well made piece of kit and the stepped section increases the volume much more than say the Forge (13.6l vs 11.1l), plus obviously its BLACK! The price is the same as Ktec though, I assumed it would be cheaper therefore I tried to waggle a deal but they sell direct at the same price as their wholesalers but include the postage free as a little incentive.

  25. Excellent news Mark, glad to be of assistance in draining your bank account..it makes me feel slightly better about draining mine all the time

You should get it by the weekend? My second light arrived this morning so we're all done there! It really is the easiest job I've ever done, takes about 10 minutes tops.

  26. Yes thanks Mark!! I’ve actually sold a watch to pay for all this work. Wagner UK were hopeful that I would get it by the weekend and I have Friday off so may be the stars will align. Good news regarding your 2nd light. Coincidentally I received two e-mails from them this morning to say the money had been taken, so hopefully both mine are on their way.

The car is now booked at Engine Dynamics (a Renaultsport specialist fairly near to me) for the full service & fluids, hose fitting, exhaust and dyno session. All I’ve got to sort now are the brakes and it looks like I have enough pennies in the jar for the PFC V3’s so just waiting to order those…..

Regarding the Wagner, the instructions show two pieces of plastic trim having to be cut, did you do this? Any other bits that needed cutting/drilling etc.??

  27. A watch you say? I like my watches but never seem to buy them! I love a bit of retail therapy, all your spending is giving me the urge to buy a really expensive gear shifter

My bad, there is one mod you need to do on the Wagner and that's the stock air feeds (simple clip on at the top). The instructions are excellent, I just marked them up with a pen as per the photo and then got the dremel out...took about 2 minutes to do. It's just so the trim clears the end tanks and is nice and flush for feeding air in.

  28. Yes a watch. One that I didn't wear too much so won't miss it too much. I think you've been scratching your spending itch enough lately from the sounds of it, just don't scratch the CAE itch. Thanks Mk2, I saw that in the guide which they sent me before I bought it, doesn't look too much of a problem.

    My lights have been posted!!

Just got my quote on the PFC V3's...... wait for it.... £831!!!! (Rrp £925!). Holy fcuk that is a lot of money for a pair of discs. I just can't warrant that, ignorantly I thought they'd be £700. Ktec is selling the V2 kit for £779 therefore presumably may be cheaper elsewhere....

  29. May I ask the brand and model of watch? I have a thing for Richard Mille, Hublot, Oris and Zenith...

The CAE itch is too strong I'm afraid, every time I see a car with a shifter like that I just think 'want'. Glad the lights are on the way! I'm really happy with them and they have made a nice difference to the car.

Give Hi-Spec at try (http://www.hispecrotors.co.uk/index.html) they can make any rotor/bell setup you want front and rear. For the C63 the stock discs are £1k up front, Hi-Spec took my measurements and quoted me around £600 fronts and £500 rears! I had them make me some on my old Starlet Turbo, they were LIGHT and the quality was exceptional.

  30. It was a black face/black bezel ceramic Submariner. I’m not really into fancy watches, just more functional looking which tend to be diving watches such as Submariners and Seamasters etc.

We’re going to have to agree to disagree on the CAE, each to their own, just think what else the £700 (or whatever it is) could be spent on though……

Thanks, I had heard of them and will give them a look, although there is a company called Reyland that do something similar, they look to use AP Bells and fixing bolts and then presumably their own rotors. Their kit for the MK3 is a 355mm disk! Would just have to check they fit the standard 18’s though first. £595 as opposed £779 for the V2’s or £831 for the V3’s. I’m doing to do the man-maths on my magic-calculator today.

  31. Very nice indeed! I'm with you on functional over fancy (apart from the Defy Extreme from Zenith). Well if we all agreed on everything we'd still be in the dark ages  I've spent my morning looking at Li batteries and how to mount them in the boot...

Reyland, now that's a name from the past. Martin Hadland if I'm remembering correctly...what a legend he is. His old Escort Cosworth was and still is one of my favourite tuner cars ever. Didn't realise they did bits for the Megane? Can I ask why you want a bigger disc? To me it's just added weight (with the dogbone for the caliper) and another point for failure in a crucial system. I would imagine that stock disc size with top notch pads, fluid and lines would be more than up to any job you can throw at them and that's coming from me...the man who is about to spunk £800+ on a fancy gear knob!

  32. This is going to sound very w@nky but literally every guy on my train wears a black Sub, so I’ve stopped wearing it so much and have been enjoying wearing some other watches. At the weekends if I’m just being beaten up by my 27 month old Spartan I just put a Casio G-Shock on, which actually I really like!!

Ha ha, you are not going to stop are you. I said you would end up with another track-only car!! Have you felt the weight of the spare wheel?! Removing that and fitting a lighter battery in the boot would help, but so would no doubt, if like me, losing a few lbs. …and also not adding a few lbs of fancy gear stick!

Yes I remember their Cossie very well from all the mags at the time. Have a look at their site!!

I don’t necessarily want a bigger disc; it’s just that the only one they sell/make for the Mk3 happens to be 355mm. Which if you think about it is only 15m more than standard and 7.5mm on either side which is nothing really. I’ve spoken to them this morning and yes it fits under the standard 18”. I had a very open and frank conversation with a really nice helpful guy there who explained the cost saving over say an AP or PFC rotor (the bell and bolts are still AP) is that the rotor comes from the same foundry as most of the OEM/Brembo etc. discs and that they are not cryogenically treated. He said that Mountune fit their kits to mega-power dedicated track MK2/MK3 Focus’ and have never had any problems. Yes they will be a tad heavier than an AP rotor and hold the heat slightly more due to straight internal vanes rather than curved, but other than that it will still be a lot lighter and retain the heat much less than the standard one-piece Brembo. Me being anal they are possibly going to machine a standard Brembo plain rear disc (with the all-important bearing already pressed in) with the same sided straight grooves to match the front rotors….!!!! I think I have made my mind up!

  33. I plan at some point to indulge my watch fetish...it will start with a watch I've wanted for a long time and it's not even expensive, the Oris TT3 Chrono in rose gold. I have a Dyberg and Kern?? That my daughter 'bought' for me aged 2. Christ, what train do you get on where everyone is wearing expensive watches!?

This, sadly (or not) is me...I'm a frustrated engineer. The spare wheel came out day one along with the tool kit  It now sits in the garage next to the C63 spare wheel. The battery to the boot was more to fit a better filter which seems to be a 'hot' (pun intended) topic around these parts. Weight wise, I'm a gym rat so there's nothing I can do there to improve AND the CAE is going to be pretty light weight I think, stop trying to put me off my awesome decision!

I think like you and your CL fetish, we should buy different parts and then compare experience. I'll go Hi-Spec and Pagid, you go CL and Reyland. Reminds me of a group of Clio boys from years back who had 3 almost identical Clio phase 1 172 track cars, these things were serious kit but they each tried different solutions to the same problems and rapidly found the ultimate answers. That = us I've decided.

  34. My grandad always told me you can tell the wealth of a man by his watch, because it is usually the last thing they end up buying after the house, car, suits etc. If you buy well you may not actually lose any money, or they may in fact end up being an investment. I get the 07:42 from Ingatestone to Liverpool St!

Ah, so you’re an engineer, which explains all the tinkering. I’m not qualified but have a mechanical head on so not afraid to tinker and usually just end up learning from my inevitable mistakes. I at first also removed the spare wheel and carried a can of foam, but then peer-pressure on here forced me to put it back in because apparently the cans don’t actually pump and seal the tyre satisfactorily. So for the relatively negligible weight just advised to put the wheel and jack back in. We can always take them out track-side. You’ve seen my comments regarding leaving the standard air-box in, but if you fancy a tinker then go for it. I gave up the gym (boxing) and climbing exactly 27 months ago when No.1 was born, I miss feeling “fit” but will get back into it once they’ve left home.....!!

Well, I did have a CL fetish, but from having spoken to an ‘expert’ he recommended to go PFC Z-rated and that’s also what Nick on here has always advised so that’s what I’m doing. Good idea, although what I’ll actually do is just continue to be a few weeks behind you and let you be the guinea-pig. ……..Not including the CAE though!!

So what’s your next project or purchase going to be then?????

    Last edited: Feb 22, 2017
  35. Very true indeed, sadly my list is LONG so the watch always gives way to headphones or something else. One day soon I will buy the Oris though.

I'm not an engineer, I'm a frustrated one...maybe a past life? I'm Commercial Director for an online gambling software house, couldn't be further from my hobby. Like you I've just always been interested in mechanics and made lots of mistakes along the way. I have never once carried a spare wheel in a car and to this day in over 20 years of driving I have never once had a puncture on the road  If I didn't go to the gym I'd be a terrible person to live with, I'm there 3 times a week, every week no matter where I am in the world!!

I'm happy to be the cool maverick eccentric trend setter type, that does make me Mark1 though...can you live with that? Once I've done the KWs, wheels, CAE and remap on the Meg I'm hoping I can just drive the thing lots and lots. That said, I've been speaking to a company in Aus about splitters for looks more than aero advantage.

Do you whatsApp or anything like that? Might be a better way to converse

  36. There’s always something. Let’s talk about HiFi next. The Oris looked nice though and something you could put £800+ to straight away!!

Let’s not make jokes about being frustrated. Job sounds interesting, more so than “insurance”!!!, my wife is an investment banker and lots of her clients are on-line gambling companies. Small world hey.

I’m happy for you to be Maverick, if I can be Viper. Once all this work has been done I think I’ll just be fettling after that. The splitter sounds interesting though, let me know how you get on.

I’m too old for social media!

  37. My newer found audio fetish is headphones. I bought a set of Sennheiser IE80 a few years back and it all went down hill from there.

Insurance like gambling is recession proof though

    So..Viper it is.

  38. You can’t beat a good pair of headphones, those IE80’s look great, I was bought a pair of B&O in-ear headphones a few years ago and they’re ok, but not fantastic and not what I would expect from the similar price to yours. But because they are a present I can’t really replace them.

Yes you are probably right. The insurance I deal in is called “Energy”, which basically is oil rigs, petrochemical plants, power stations etc., so at least for the next 100 years or so insurance will always be needed for these sometimes USD 20B plants, or USD 2B rigs.

Don’t forget the hard deck for this hop was 10,000 feet….

  39. Absolutely, the problem is with anything brilliant..suddenly anything less is shit! B&O are usually pretty good but I wouldn't class them as audiophile level (I'm such a snob).

So KTR are doing a deal on the stage 2 hybrid turbo setup. As I have most of the mods already (bar turbo and injectors) I'm talking to them on price, if we can reach an agreement I'll be doing that!! I told you I need help.

  40. I'm with you on the CAE shifter, very tempting. I also started looking at lithium batteries yesterday but bloody hell are they expensive
