Just started today, putting load on when in 6th it jumps out to neutral. All other gears are good and fine under load. Any ideas?
Hi This was the problem when i bought mine, had the gearbox stripped and the gear cluster was damaged, to fix the problem is £440 for the gear alone, i bought a low mileage box off of Ebay for £180 delivered. Mine is a phase one inferno as well, maybe a fault with the orange ones
Thanks fella's I had assumed it could be a number of different things, ranging from easy'ish fixes to needing a whole new box I am getting some vibration in the car, which could be a sign that the gearbox mount is going? Would that cause this issue?
Yeah the vibration could definitely be caused be a failed mount. Where are you? Plenty of specialist on here that could take a look without it costing you silly money.
I'm in Lancashire. Visited Mark Black in the past, he fitted the other mounts apart from the gearbox which was fine, but that's a couple of years back!! I just hope that is the reason, and not a problem with the box
Well I can vouch for Birchdown in Cheshire if you want somebody to take a look at it. Give them a call.
I'm sure their decent guys, just looked on the map and it's further than I thought just for an 'exploring' visit. If it was a book in job for brakes / belts etc I always travel to see the best and would have given them a call. Could really do with someone closure to establish the problem first Had a look at the gearbox mount today, not as much play in it as i had thought, wouldn't stand out as needing changing to me. Visually inspected the gear cables as the gears were being changed and there is not as much movement when 6th is being engaged. I'm wondering if the cables can stretch / be tightened?
Hi Bit late this I know but was this ever fixed. I have a 53 reg 1.9 dci which is doing the same thing. Goes into 6th gear no problem and will stay there until I accelerate then it pops out of gear. I'm also wondering if worn gearbox mount or knackered gearbox. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks
Well the OP has not been on here since June last year so I doubt you'll get an answer personally. Can you hold it in 6th and drive okay? This might rule out the box at a guess. It is annoying when people don't update their threads
Hi Thanks for responding. Yes if you hold it in 6th gear it will stay there all day. No crunching, whining at all.
Could be the mount then. I think the box might even be the same as used in the RS Meganes of the same vintage due to the increased torque handling. A friendly local garage should be able to diagnose the fault for a few quid I'd have thought.
As in second post, i had the same fault, popped out of 6th but with very small pressure on the gear lever it would say in, i had mine stripped and it was the baulk rings and the gear where the baulk rings fitted were damaged, replacement gearbox was purchased and stripped to check the internals and a LSD fitted, been great ever since.
