R26 Clutch advice

  1. Hi, my car doesn't need one as yet as no signs of slipping. But wanted to get some heads up advice for when the time comes! I have a modified R26 which is running at 285bhp and 300flbt. As far as I am aware it is running on a standard clutch. What would people recommend as a replacement? I am aware that the R26R clutch is a favourite due to its light weight and clamping force. I know Ktec do the clutch and flywheel package. But reading some forums some advise against these. Are there any other options for hard wearing clutch kits?

  2. I think the ktec kit is the same SMF that everywhere uses to be honest.

The only other option above the R26R clutch is uprated ones like helix paddle clutches but they're heavier and not as easy to live with.

I'm going to go for the SMF & R26R clutch in mine fairly soon, hoping to save a bit of money by using a diesel scenic clutch as its supposedly the same as the R26R clutch but half the price

  3. What have you been quoted to fit?

  4. Not had a quote to fit, only been looking at parts so far.

    I'm guessing its a 2-3 hours labour

  5. What are the benefits of the R26R SMF kit over standard?

  6. The main thing is it has around 20%more clamping force than a non r clutch.
It's not trouble free though. I found if my engine mounts were even slightly worn it will throw up an error code relating to the trigger pattern /hall sensor.
It makes a weird noise on startup (sort of like a butcher sharpening knives quickly).
And you will get a bit more of transmission noise/ vibration through the car.
I think mine is about 6/7 kg lighter than standard which will have a bit of an effect of quicker acceleration in the lower gears.
Also the revs fall slightly quicker on gear shifts too.

  7. Oh forgot to say, the flywheel shouldn't wear out either like the standard dmf does/ will

  8. I know Mark Black charges (or did ) around £750 for the parts and fitting for the R26R clutch and SMF. Running 300lbs you will find it will start to go much quicker than on a normal car. It does give a error code when you change it but this can be mapped out.

I think the 26R clutch is rated to 338lbs so can handle much more power. I have not had any issues with mine, car seems similar to how it was before, no noticeable vibration.
