Death of a 275 Trophy :-(

Discussion in 'Megane Discussion' started by Trophy Pete, Jan 13, 2017.

  1. U.K. Trophy 121 - yet to be written off by insurance company but merely a formality unfortunately. Slid off the road due to snow / ice yesterday and took a heavy collision with some trees and then rolled / flipped over. Will keep you updated as best I can with regards to what's happening with it as the exhaust / seats and three of the wheels are still in good condition (not sure the process about breaking etc, but could be of use to someone on here)
    Gutted :-(

  2. Oh that sucks man, :worried:

    Assume no personal injury's?

  3. Hope you're ok mate? Yeah im sure theres a fair few parts you could sell to get a few quid back. Calipers, discs, driveshafts, shocks, springs, engine etc etc etc

  4. Nothing too serious thankfully, just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It had just recently snowed and hit an unmelted patch as I was changing lanes :-(

  5. I am awaiting inspection from insurance company etc and I have GAP insurance but does anyone know the process for breaking? Is it only possible if I buy the vehicle from the insurance company? Seems a waste if they just scrap it that's all...

  6. Really sorry to hear that Pete, gutted for you mate. Main thing is that you're ok, was this in Cumbria?

  7. Glad the important bits are in one piece (you).

Anyone with mk3 electric seats else want to gently tap most of your body panels off something not too hard and sell me your seats?

  8. Cheers mate, yeah was A66 near Troutbeck on way towards Penrith

  9. i know that feeling when you lose control on ice...just horrible.
Just that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach....

  10. Once insurance is sorted I'll happily sell any part that's still safe and sound, just need to find out the process etc. Will keep you posted

Gutted for you mate, glad you are okay

  12. Ahh yeah I know the road, fast section.

  13. You may have to buy it back from insurance, not sure not needed to think about it for 12 years.

My last write off was taken away for review / inspection and never seen again.

  14. I'll ask them about it following the inspection and sell whatever people want!

  15. Sad day mate. At least you're ok

  16. Just thismorning while I was getting in a mood removing the battery tray! I was just thinking that as much as a pain they can be to work on they are very strong and that things like crash bars etc that "are in my way" really make the difference. My neighbour has a mk1 megane and when also helping him today his car just looks so weak under the bonnet.

I too would be gutted but it can be replaced, you can't.

  17. Yeah, the trees weren't huge luckily but the car has done its job and kept the soft jelly bits inside safe! I'd rather not test it again though! Thanks for all the kind words folks, hope to buy another Trophy as I loved it!

  18. What a shit way to start the year,
    Glad you are ok.
Looks as if its testament to the meganes bulid..

  19. Happy to see that you came out of it unharmed!! Pity for the car, but it's only a piece of metal in the end of the day.

done a proper job on that, glad your ok though

  21. Look at that now famous white megane crash at the ring on YouTube, I thing that guy had a broken thumb and that was it! Not often you see a car do a front flip!

  22. really felt that Friday the 13th luck :worried:

  23. Gutted mate.

I'm always over-cautious changing lanes in this type of situation. Glad your okay and seem to be in fairly high spirits.

What to get next? (Edit: just seen - another Trophy :grinning:)

  24. Wow glad you are ok. Out of interest, whats the difference between that Trophy and a standard RS?

  25. Ohlins (if optioned), Akrapovic exhaust, different interior trim, cup chassis & LSD, more power, stickers, RS Monitor & Nav.

It depends on which standard RS you're comparing it to.

  26. So its a normal megane with a few options?

  27. Pretty much, yeah.

Like a RS is a normal 1.4 Megane with a few options :rage::smile:

  28. Ha ha yeah exactly the same. I just thought that it would have some mechanical differences that arent available on a non trophy.

  29. Cor damn, thats quite a crash! Glad you walked away. Did the seat airbags not go off?

DoubleD, it's got everything on it more or less as standard other than the Ohlins and 19" Speedline wheels, which are options and also the Alcantara/leather seats which are standard only in the Trophy

  30. Strangely no, the airbags didn't go off. I went to the recovery yard yesterday and the roof and A frame had bent (causing the windscreen to pop out, which allowed me to exit the car fortunately) there appeared to be two main areas where it had collided with (I'm assuming) trees and that was just off centre of the bonnet and also the offside rear quarter. My mate said something about the speedo dropping out if a car goes sideways??? Maybe that's why the airbags didn't deploy, I don't know. Hopefully bump the value up for all you other Trophy owners!

  31. Glad you're ok and I bet you are thankful you have GAP insurance !

  32. Glad you're ok mate. I hope that the insurance company treat you well.

  33. Dreadful thing to have to go through, seriously glad you're in good shape to tell the tail. Massive learning curve. Typically if insurance pay out they're effectively buying the vehicle so won't be able to salvage parts unless you buy it back which is normally an option.

  34. Looks like that will be a cat b write off (not allowed to be re road registered), so unless you have a salvage license you won't be able to buy it back.

  35. Hey,

    Yeah as above really.

You can still 'retain the salvage' when the car is written off, but only if it's a Cat C or D. Like Dale says, yours looks like a more serious Cat B, so you need a salvage license to buy it back.

If the crash wasn't as bad and it was a C or D then you can definitely 'retain the salvage' as the car is your property. You simply receive a pay out for your vehicle minus what they value the 'salvage' at. But that's not the case with an A or B.

Which means that you probably won't be able to take anything from the car, unless you had insured the options as modifications in which case you could potentially go and take them off the car and swap them for some standard items (such as the seats) but it's quite messy to try and do that when the car is in a salvage yard etc.

I know all this because my 250 was written off back in Feb 2016 but was classed as a Cat D so I bought it back/retained the salavage and have now repaired it.

But aside from all that, it looks like a really nasty crash! Just be glad you're ok. The car can easily be replaced

    Cheers,

    James

  36. Sorry to hear your bad news,i hope you get back into a megane soon

  37. Thanks for the kind words and the advice re: the salvage info. Still waiting on the insurance to either make me an offer or replace (which would be difficult) the vehicle. Once I hear anything I'll update this post

  38. Glad your ok bud proper shame it's gone to the gods

  39. When my Subaru impreza got written off,i bought a £6000 car back for £400.
No way that car could have been put back on the road..the chassis was bent by about 6 inches!

I just stripped it,and sold every last bit of it...That's the thing with imprezas..everyone wants the bits.

  40. What category wrote off was that mate?
