Im thinking of running 595 RSR's on my 197 all year round. Has anyone ran these? How are they in the snow / rain? I intend to use them on road and track. It's either these at £60 a corner or Michelin PS2/3/4 which I have always ran Michelin on every car and they're currently on the 250.
On my R26 they were ok in the dry, and even on track, but lethal in the rain.Others might have had a different experience.
Loads of people go for rainsports for road tyres. I wanna try some but having 3sets of wheels is a bit much.
I am a massive winter tyre fan but also a massive hypocrite as I am still on Nankang NS2Rs. They work well in the wet up to a point. They would be shit in the snow though like the Feddies would be I assume. Depends on circumstances and ability to not take the car (I can borrow my daughter's car on Nokian Weatherproofs).
I used these both on road and track on my 197, I never had any issues with them. There is quite a bit of road noise from them tho. I put rain sports on my abarth and the fronts were done after 5,500 miles!
I've done a lot of miles on track and the road on Feds in the wet in my M3 . Brilliant tyres. Just don't go driving through standing water like a hero and you'll be fine.
They are good all year wet or dry, but fall down quite bad with temps. Below around 7 deg they struggled for straight line and corner grip and at 2 deg there's another level of lost traction. Great tyre for price, just not designed for cold temps. Michelin on other hand are much better at lower temps.
At 7 or less any summer tyre is recomended to be replaced with a winter tyre. Especially a semyslick. Sent from my LG-D855 using Tapatalk
I have always found that 7 deg C threshold to be quite conservative for UHP tyres. 3deg is my personal threshold for switching to winters.
I done some serious road and track mile on a set of 595rsr and I can't fault them at all bar the slightly soft sidewall. As for in the wet just don't drive like a plum and you'll be perfectly fine
I found the RS-R to be very good when new in the dry but not so after. Compared to the Michelins you mention it'd probably be a bit louder and less comfortable if that makes a difference. In my experience once they're old and have done a lot of track days the grip really falls off especially in the wet (even when there is healthy tread). The same could be said of a lot of tyres but my experience of Michelins has found they keep their grip much better. Also, two sets both lost their shape at very high speed.
When running my first set, my car (a high powered skyline gtr) developed a really bad vibration at high speed, the faster I went the worse it got and it felt scary! After spending a lot of money exploring different possibilities (drive shafts/prop, balancing wheels again and again) I eventually worked out that it was the tyres that were causing the vibration. Interestingly it wasn't a problem at about 100 mph, but at 120+ it got worse and worse the faster you went. I'd already bought my second set of federal rs-r's before working out they were the cause of my problems! Once the second set were fitted the high speed vibration disappeared. But after a couple of track days it returned, exactly as the first set! (It wasn't balancing or the tyres moving on the wheels) The way they're manufactured is crap too, every single one of the 8 tyres I bought developed a crack running across the carcass of the tyre, kumho suffer the same problem, it's where they're glued together apparently. In my experience I've never seen this with michelins or higher quality brands. Lap times are good when new; 52 secs at brands Indy , running a pilot sport 3 is over a second slower, tyres like r888 I don't think would be much quicker against a new federal. But they don't last anything like as long as 'better' tyres so are actually much more expensive to run - false economy. Yes they'll do some good times but you'll get maybe 1 hour of proper use compared to many hours with a better tyre. Lol sorry for long post! Difficult to explain - does that make any sense?
Make sense just not had that experience with fed's..am on roughly 18th set over 6 years have hit 163mph (my meg full out ) hand full times and v often 130 without issue. Am aware of the splitting but only superficial and soon wears passed it.
I run them on my Scenic and find them fantastic in the rain. It doesn't rain here much though. They're not really a long life tyre.
Maybe I just got a couple Of bad batches, it was in 2013/14. 18 sets in 6 years is a pretty good test!
