One modification....

Discussion in 'Megane Discussion' started by chris, Dec 20, 2016.

  1. if you had to pick one modification that you have made to your megane and leave the rest of the car stock what would it be?

    What are your reasons?

Mine would be the cooksports. Changes the overall look of the car so much and improves the handling.

    Remap, has to be.

  4. Meg conversion on my Clio!

Turbo'ed Clio is now in the shed, driving a std R27 since yesterday and already fed up with the lack of power/torque!

  7. Agree with above. It it's not a mod
So I'd also go for mid box chop

  8. Mid box chop

  9. ....I didn't think the mid-box chop made that much difference. Definitely a cheap and worthwhile mod to do if not upgrading the whole system but it wouldn't be my “best” mod. That would be the re-map!!!! Circa 300bhp!!!

Am I allowed to pick my forged engine :tearsofjoy:

Mine was mapped when I bought it so think best mod I've done is upgrading the brakes. I found the brakes a bit weak with oem pads.

  11. It's all about the tyres for me so sticking track proof semis was the best mod for me although cheap brake upgrades go hand in hand

  12. I'm with him. The hit list should always be;

    Tyres,
    Brakes,
    Trackday,
    Consult the bank manager,
    Etc. Etc. Etc.

  13. Remap..

  14. On a phase 1 or 2 megane, without a doubt the shortshift..The most glaring weakspot in the package is the ridiculous, vague ,long gear throw.

I was thinking it was going to be the short shift, but after thinking about it i have to go with the mk3 brakes on my 225, just epic

  16. The short shift and clio steering wheel have made the biggest driving experience changes on mine. I'm keen to get the recaro mounts lowered too, still feel like I sit a bit high even though i'm used to it now.

I came from a 197 to my R26 and initially it didn't feel sporty at all. Gear change throw was massive and the steering wheel felt feeble.

After those a remap, decent tyres and decent brake pads are all up there on transforming an RS megane.

  17. Definitely short shift, still gives me the best SPG (smilespergallon) of any mod I got:imp:

  20. The more I look into it, the more I wish I'd have done this first of all

Give it a year and I'll see if the theory works well in practice

What have you done ??? pm me if you want to keep it quite

There's a lower final drive available for the MK3, expensive though.

  23. There are numerous options. Standard is 4.188. You can move to 4.92, 5.08, or 5.31

I've not done anything yet, but am planning to move to the 5.31 as part of the upgrades over next winter

  24. Am I to believe that of all the modifications you could do, that's the "one"................

  25. Tyres. Weather it be on road or track a decent set of tyres is massively noticeable on the megane.

Ahh right, yours is a track only car though isn't it ?????

  27. No, else it'd be stripped and caged etc. It's more of a 'clubspec' I was aiming for. I've got a decent sound system in it and so on.

okaaaaaay, why do yo want to lower the gearing then, better acceleration

  29. yeah, that's basically it. You can increase the turning forces at the wheels considerably, without any additional strain on the engine, but you also need to give some thought to the kind of tracks you'll be driving on and what kind of car you have

there's a myriad of things i'm looking at, but essentially looking to have a later spooling turbo, higher revving engine, and shorter final drive

The gear ratios are pretty decent on the MK3 on the stock setup, interested to see how you get on though Neil, your planning on stuff that I would be a bit keen to try out but you can be the guinea pig LOL

  32. More than happy to chat it through at some point Jamie, but (in theory) the numbers stack up

    1. Increase limiter to 8000rpm
    2. Move to GTX3071, torque band shifts to around 4-4500rpm until 7000

With a custom manifold, may push that a little further up so it holds on a little longer

    3. With 5.31 ratios, third would be on boost from 40mph onwards (assuming 18" wheels), gear change at around 85mph for 4th. That's about the same as it is with standard setup and standard 6500rpm limiter (which is c. 82mph)

4th with a 5.31 final drive provides more torque than 3rd with a 4.188 (standard) final drive

I will look at my videos and ODBII data at the ring next year, but what this would do is provide more acceleration force from a lower speed in third, roughly the same gear change point from third to fourth, and provide 4th with a slightly higher acceleration force than 3rd is currently

Top speed is obviously reduced, but I rarely drive at over 140mph anyway!!

Motorway cruising would be 77mph in 6th at 3500rpm. But remember the turbo spoils later, so it should feel fairly similar

Next time you're on track, boot it in third, then change to fourth, and imagine having the same acceleration in fourth as you do in third

My reason for looking into this was because I still feel the Megane is a bit flat in 4th (and more so in 5th)

I also enjoy the sense of greater acceleration more than the idea of overall reduced laptimes. I am hoping the Megane would feel like a little rally car, popping 3rd/4th a lot round track and then 5th for any long straights (which to be frank, I find kind of boring and currently I don't like how the Meg's brakes can't cool - so big braking efforts from higher top speeds don't really interest me)

That's the theory anyway. I need to analyse how each track is over the next year and then decide whether or not to go for it

May also depend finances as it'll be a lot of dollar just for a bit of extra fun!

Sounds good, interesting to see if you do go down that route.

Maybe once your driven it a bit more next year you might decide to change some of your plan. Id like to go GTX or HTA turbo on mine but its quick enough as it is if you drive it well, particularly on track with good rubber

  34. Aren't you running 360 on a hybrid Jamie? Surely that's pretty much the sweet spot for a fwd on track? I'm not sure I'd want more than that to be honest, plus the costs spiral from there onwards.

I am indeed as as quick as it is, It could still do with another 30/40bhp, Hopefully going tubular mani will shift the power further up though and make it feel a bit better top end though.

    Brake pads.

I drove my car bone stock on a track day and by far and away the worst part of the package was the garbage stock brake pads. Even stock these cars are remarkably competent on track except for the braking performance.

  37. Sounds like you're targeting 400/400 [emoji41] that would be a riot. Especially if you can, as you say, shift the power band on a few rpm.

  38. Yes pads. £100 or so buys decent pads, but ideally that needs to be matched by the fluid (cheap too).

Yeah aiming for around that, The RST turbo should do it with some more boost put through it, some forged rods and a bit more breathing tweaks with some Meth thrown in to keep EGTs down
