275 Cup S mid box chop

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by John, Dec 21, 2016.

  1. Hi all, I am thinking about getting the mid box chop done on my 275. I have seen a fair few posts on 250's and 265's but nothing on the 275. Has anyone had it done and does anyone have any videos of the sound?

    Thanks

    John

I think its safe to say that it will soon the same, being that they are the same car under the styling tweaks.

  3. The 250’s, 265’s and 275’s are mechanically identical, the chop is worth doing for the relatively small cost (I paid £50 cash), but it surprisingly didn’t make that much difference, may be say 10-20% louder and a few crackles now and again . Would I advise having it done? – for the money yes, but don’t expect it to sound that much difference to stock. I think upgrading to a 3” system would make much more of a difference, but then they cost many £100’s.

  4. I have to disagree with the above, I think it made a great difference (sport mode)
Mind it depends on what sound you want I suppose, that said if you do it and it ain't loud enough you haven't wasted too much money

  5. I did it on my 265, it made a big difference especially in sport mode, much nicer and louder sound a plenty of bangs out of it.

Not doing it on my 275 Cup-S as I have the Akra on it, went the decat route instead

  6. On a side-note, I don’t understand why sport-mode would make any difference to anything other than the throttle sensitivity? It’s not an individual map, it just gives 75% power at 50% pedal travel rather than 50% power at 50% travel (I’m making the percentages up), it gives more power for less travel i.e. it feels more powerful quicker. My diesel DSG Q5 does the same thing by putting the gearstick into Sport rather than Drive, it doesn’t magically make the car quicker or more powerful, it just gives more power quicker for the same pedal travel (and because it’s an auto it holds onto the gear longer).

So my point is I don’t see how changing to the Sport mode would affect the sound of the exhaust?? – Happy to be proven wrong.

I definitely didn’t want it especially any louder, just ideally a bit more “sporty” as I think it sounded a bit dull as standard. My personal opinion is that the mid-box chop didn’t really change the type of sound but just made it a bit louder, possibly a bit boomier. I used to have a 370Z and removing the standard mid-boxes made it sound more metallic and “Ferrari” like, rather than just louder or boomier. At the end of the day it was worth doing to the Megane for £50 but I think the ‘proper’ thing to do would be to fit a 3” system.

  7. Now I bet that sounds just lovely, from what I’ve seen of it on pictures it’s a straight-through centre and then a relatively small back box, presumably the diameter is 3” rather than the standard 2.5”?

  8. It does......
Sport mode alters the exhaust note....

  9. ....how? This could only be through flaps in the exhaust, which as far as I know it doesn’t have any.

  10. Don't know!
    Just does, 100%

  11. It might be ECU triggered whereby a little fuel is let through on a lift for the pops. I may be talking out of my proverbial as always...

  12. I think that the mid box chop is definitely worth doing, made a big difference to the sound of my car and far more difference when pressing the sport button.

  13. Cheers for the replies. I have got it booked in on Friday for the chop, gonna cost £50. I wasn't after anything too crazy sound wise was just wanting something a bit more sporty/throaty.

  14. Sport mode does make a difference. I have a turbo back exhaust effectively and it pops and bangs a lot more in sport mode then it does normally.

I've asked people why but no one seems to know.

  15. Ask someone on the Rennosport forum then.
I understood it did make a difference.
Using the R link monitor it shows about 250/265 BHP.
In sport mode the turbo shows blowing harder and the BHP goes to 278
    It could be just 'magic'!!

    Cheers Andy

  16. I was just going to post this. On a 265/275, the sport mode produces more power. This has to involve more than just the throttle mapping - it's a different engine map, hence the possibility of the exhaust sounding different.

  17. When in sport mode the engine is over fueled by the ecu hence more pops and bangs!

  18. Yeah that's what I meant at 3.30pm lol

  19. Had the chop done and I am very happy with the results, it gives the car a more sporty sound in normal and RS mode

  20. I'm guessing it invalidates the warranty....what about MOT (when my time comes)

  21. No issues with the MOT

  22. Sport Mode is a different/altered map. Idle is slightly higher (mine is anyway), and more boost in a nut shell. 1 Bar in normal mode and 1.25-1.3 Bar in Sport IIRC. Both contribute to slightly different notes, no magic or flappy exhausts unfortunately

  23. How is this effected if it's been re-mapped?

  24. For not much more than that most garages will supply and fit the mid box chop.

  25. I checked with Renault UK as my car is new and it doesn't void the warranty
