Sport mode questions

Discussion in 'Electrical & Interior - Security, ICE, Wiring Loom' started by Space Cadet, Dec 12, 2016.

  1. There are two initial settings, either Normal or Sport, which as far as I can make out change both the throttle response and the ESP.

When in Sport I can alter the setting to Snow, Progressive, Linear, Sport and Extreme.

If I, for example, set it to Extreme does this change the “Sport” mode to Extreme permanently or do I need to go in and change it each time?

Does the ESP change with each setting? Or is it possible to for example keep the ESP standard but increase the throttle response??

    Thanks!

  2. Once set in Sport mode, the throttle map won't change unless you change it even if you change mode. It doesn't affect ESP setting. The throttle maps only work in Sport (and off), not in normal. But I don't know what the default throttle map is in normal mode ? Linear, presumably.

  3. Thanks Nick

I’ve just re-read the manual and TBH I’m still confused:

    Checking the ASR/ESP function

The function has three operating modes:

    Normal mode
    Sport mode
    ESP/ASR mode deactivated.

Normal mode - This is the operating mode for the engine and ESP/ASR system when the ignition is switched on. The system operates optimally.

Sport mode - You can modify the operating parameters of the engine and the ESP/ASR system. To lower the trigger threshold for these driving correction devices press switch 1. The message Sport Mode, ESP Sport is displayed on the instrument panel to inform you.”

This seems to infer that the ESP also changes when the engine mode changes (which makes sense I suppose).

When I press switch 1 the display changes from something like ‘Normal Mode / ESP normal’ to ‘Sport Mode / ESP Sport’, why would it read “ESP sport” if only the engine mode is changed, you would espect it to read Sport Mode / ESP normal...!?

But you are suggesting if I go in and change the throttle setting further to Snow or Extreme etc. it only changes the throttle – it doesn’t change the ESP? – If so then great!

So what is the default “sport” setting? – is it presumably sport - or do I need to actually go into to change it to Sport/Extreme??

  4. normal is sport off
press button once to activate Sport with the 5 throttle modes each more sensitive than last all with ESP/ASR still active
press and hold button to get the same 5 throttle options but now with ASP/ASR deactive

  5. Thanks.

I’m still surprised it says “ESP Sport” though even though it’s still on/normal – why doesn’t it say ESP Normal??

The guide says it displays “Sport Mode / ESP off” when the ESP has been fully turned off.

(Sorry if I’m sounding argumentative, I just don’t think it all makes sense.)

So you are saying the ESP remains unchanged even when the throttle mode has been changed to for example Extreme? I assumed it decreases its sensitivity as you scroll up through the throttle modes.

So I guess what I am asking, regardless of what the display reads that if I change the throttle to Sport or Extreme it doesn’t alter the ESP at all? (which is good as I’m not a hero!).

And therefore there is only two ESP settings, either Normal/on or off?

  6. correct with everything you've said

  7. No there are 3 ESP modes (neither of them related to throttle maps) :
    Normal (fully on)
Sport (fully on but higher activation threshold, more slip angles needed for stabilisation to activate itself)
    Fully off (5 second press)

  8. Thanks!!

It’s a bit counter-intuitive, but at the end of the day is perfect for me - I can increase the throttle response but keep the ESP unaltered.

I only picked it up on Saturday and it was biblical rain on the way home therefore didn’t want to test the throttle maps out for fear of reducing the ESP sensitivity.

    So just to confirm:

Sport On – then change the throttle to Sport or Extreme (what does it default to in Sport?).

ESP always on and unaltered unless the switch is pressed for 2 seconds and then it’s fully deactivated.

  9. think its 5 sec, mine is anyway

  10. sorry yes 2 sec from sport, 5 sec from normal

  11. I knew I wasn’t being dumb.

So the ESP is not able to be controlled independently of the throttle maps. So as soon as soon as I go into Sport mode to then change the throttle setting to Sport or Extreme it has “reduced” the ESP!?

  12. mine doesn't but yours might, mine is either on or off

  13. You'd presume your 265's settings would either be the same as my 250, or Nick's 275, or both....

  14. Correcto!

  15. Renault programmed the system perfectly IMHO.

Normal mode - full driver aides and 'easy' throttle map

Sport mode - reduced threshold for drivers aides (but still holding your hand) & adjustable throttle map (which stays on the previously selected one)

Race mode - no driver aides and throttle map as on sport mode

If it's anything other than dry and warm(ish), or you're in town, you're better leaving the car in normal mode really, again IMHO.

And unless your driving like an utter bellend there is no reason to have ESP fully off in the road IMO.

  17. Bobsan is correct, as is usual the simple answer is the complete answer

  18. Thanks everyone.
