What do you use? To Tow track carsick

Discussion in 'Track Days & Track Driving' started by mike_snowdon, Nov 29, 2016.

  1. Hi,
Just a quick question on what people use to transport your track cars?
Im not sure about trailer limits on my licence as I missed out on the trailer bit but I've heard you can use small trailers up to a certain weight?
If I use one of those tow dollys does the car count as "being recovered" so don't need the extra trailer bit?
Or is it worth taking the extra test and using a proper trailer????
    Thanks people...

    Hi Mike
I can't 100% help you, i passed my test about a 100 years ago
If you are thinking about towing weights, it is for the total amount, trailer and contents, just take the trailer test and then you will never need to worry about it now or in the future.

  3. without B&E (trailer test) you can only tow up to 750kg and unbraked..
and as a perspective the Brian james trailer i use for the car is not far off 750kg on its own

and im unsure on the rules behind the dollys

  4. Braked trailer limit is higher, you have a combined limit of 3500 kg with the new drivers licenses

You can drive any weight trailer as long as the combined weight of trailer and car are not over 3500kg

  7. I use a BMW X5 4.4 v8
Tows like a dream and would pull a bus out of a wet field !
I have a Brian james tilt car trailer , which makes life easy, no ramps just drive it on

  8. You'll need do a trailer test to tow a Megane. The trailer and load can't be heavier than the tow car iirc and the total weight of everything can't be more than 3500kg. You can just about do it with a stripped Clio, but no chance with a Megane.

  9. Yep, second that, the tow car must weigh more than the combined car and trailer weight.
The weight used is the MAM.
MAM is the limit on how much the vehicle can weigh when it’s loaded.

  10. So will a 2002 A4 estate 2.5tdi 4wd one. be able to tow a megane 225 if I do trailer test? (I missed the grandfather rights to it by a month)
Or shall I start looking for something smaller?
    Thanks people.

  11. I would have thought the Audi would have enough torque to tow that pretty easily.

Brian James Clubman trailer will be the answer. Mine can take a load of 1200 Kg but with the trailer itself weighing not much more than 400kg it puts the all up weight in the range of the towing capacity for many big cars. However I use an old P38 Range Rover that bizarrely has been one of the most reliable cars I have owned, going on for 6 years and 60+k miles now. Perfect tow car but they are definitely a bit Russian roulette, I got a sound one others had complete dogs.

  13. Rules around towing are a bit of a minefield and you cant use actual weights it has to be the MAM weight so stripping out a car makes no difference to the law. I was hoping to tow with my transit connect until I found out the towing capacity is a measly 900kg.
I missed out on having B+E on my license by 7 months so i'm booked in to do 12hrs training over two days with the test at the end.
I'm currently looking at replacing my transit connect with a Mercedes Vito 119:sunglasses:

Thing is if you got the license back in the day its crazy what you can drive, 7.5 tonne lorry, no problemo. Non fee paying minibus + trailer, no problemo. I remember the first time I even tried towing was with a rental trailer and my own Porsche 968 on the back for a 4 hr jaunt cross country. Blooming scary but since then despite a few crazy mishaps never had an accident towing (jockey wheel complete assembly fell off on the M5 causing chaos though)

.... 8250 Kg according to the gov website or 12,000 if one has the C1E.

Loads of people tow big horse boxes with 4x4s, Range Rovers and Discos can tow 3.5 tonne on the back for this market.

Quite a few club racers use the Merc vans.

Most important MAM consideration is your towing vehicle, make sure you don't end up overloaded with stuff inside the thing forgetting all the mass out the back, vans in particular.

  15. I use the wife's Kia Sportage AWD 2.0 Diesel. I have a clubman 200 trailer. The car will tow 2 Tonne but im only towing a mk3 fiesta. The megane won't fit on it anyway.

I'm old so can drive/tow pretty much anything.

  17. Thank you for the advice, but I think especially that we must weigh well if we do not want to avoid accidents.
