Hi everyone, Had my mid box removed today and I've got to say I was expecting the sound to be a little louder! Previously had a 3.0 BMW Z4 which I chopped the backbox off and the difference was night and day, with this I feel it's just as it should have been stock, with a couple of extra pops and bangs but not much! What is the next stage? I'm hesitant to go down the decat route as I don't know of a friendly MOT tester, and worry about the insurance implications if I were to have a crash - even if 'exhaust system changes' is declared - due to a decat technically being illegal? Happily stand corrected! Cheers! Dan
I have a decatted and midbox and I'm still underwhelmed with the noise - I'm thinking my next move would be to swap the back box for something a little more sport-orientated (might even nab a stock one, open it up, and see if packing can be removed/wrap some perforations)
You're right. It's how it should sound standard. You could get the back box removed too? A decat is where the best of the sound comes from.
My car had a Miltec on it when i bought it, was about 90/92 decibels when tested at trackdays, it was straight through both box's removed, fitted a decat pipe and it went to 119 decibels, now i have a Scorpion turbo back system, now back to 90/92 ish still pops and bangs
I've got a custom cat back and a decat. I'm pretty underwhelmed with it, I only have a backbox now, so I'm gna get rid of my backbox so I'll be straight piped soon
Ha Ha Ha I am of the thinking, get it to work as best as it can and as quite as reasonably possible, then while driving quick you are not drawing attention to yourself. I live fairly close to a major set of traffic lights and some nights it's like the start of an F1 race, how they get through an MOT amazes me. Am i getting old ????
Lol I don't really take this car on track. Me and my brothers have a supercharged E46 M3 as a track car Plus I know other people who are straight piped and get on track just fine.
In my opinion a 4cyl should never be super loud, it always sounds riced/boy racer-ish. Even Subaru's.. The megane sounds mean, but not really a nice/smooth sound.. Straight pipes +decat is too much IMO
I had a Milltek and that was way too quiet so I had a small powerflow box made to replace the milltek backbox and it sounded just right, made it deeper and a bit louder but still no drone.
You wouldn't like the sound from my Merc......it has a full IPE system and when you have the valve open it hurts your ears at standstill Although valve shut its quieter than the stock exhaust.
