Struggling on which to go for, I will be doing track days and my wife will be driving the car most days for work but only a few miles a day. I know both are totally different tyres but thinking its worth the extra outlay so that I don't need to buy anymore tyres for track days. Any recommendations?
I was in the same position but was considering nankang ns2r's as they have a much better wet rating than the Federals mentioned above. In the end I just went for some normal road tyres as figured it wasn't worth the risk. Can you risk taking the bollocking if your wife hits standing water and bins it/ it snows and she can't get home etc etc. My wife wouldn't understand semi slicks she would just say why have I put shit tyres that don't like the cold/ rain etc etc and probably accuse me of trying to bump her off to claim on the life insurance! I'm on ns2r's at the moment. Great in the summer. Useless in the winter. PS4s going on in a month or two.
OP. You probably need 2 sets. The PS4 won't be great on track. And the semis not great with the wife (not being sexist here). You might get away with 1 set of Yokohama 105.
AD08Rs are more than up to road and track, I've used them all year since May including a Ring trip and daily driving in Scottish weather. Perfectly capable
To be fair to the Mrs she's not a bad driver so I'm not worried about her driving on the yoko's and if the weather is that bad she don't like driving on them then she can always use my car and ill take the megane to work.
Agreed Dale. I changed my Federals for NS-2R's and they suck. Grip is good but that's it. The noise of them is simply unacceptable compared to the federals, my car now pulls to the right when doing motorway speeds under a little bit of acceleration, let off, it straightens up. I had the wheels balanced twice and the tracking done. Still does it. Cant wait to wear them out and put federals or some Super sports back on there.
Ns2rs..... where to begin. They're so loud you would swear the wheel bearings are dud. When it's wet, the car feels like its on ice, zero communication or feel. I appreciate grip will be compromised, but I'm talking about the fact that you cannot feel whether you actually have grip or not. Until you apply throttle, steering input, or brake, in which you will immediately lock up. And in the dry... yes they have grip, but after 10 minutes on track, they go off. Then you're met with chronic understeer which doesn't stop unless you pit, and leave them to cool. There's also the fact they need around 36-38 PSI when hot, to stop the sidewalls folding under hard cornering.... Moral of the story, they're £80 for a reason, I gave them a go. But frankly, I wouldn't fit another set of they were given to me. Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
I am gob smacked by your experience. Mine (in 180 guise) have been quite literally the opposite over their first 4 track days at Spa, Ring and Bedford and 3000 road miles. Apart from the noise, which I agree is high but similar to 888. Supersports at the front would only have survived 1 track days before the outer shoulder are destroyed, from experience.
The problem with cheap tyres is consistency. It is possible that you have a poor batch. Are they all roughly the same production period ?
Mine are the same as dale has mentioned and i've only just fitted them. My previous Federals were substantially better although not much more pricey. I think the Federal feels like a more accomplished tyre all round. I didn't have any wet grip issues with them and they gave more feel through the steering with less road noise by far. I do think they are not manufactured very well to be honest. At least i've tried them !
Mine are proving far better than I thought in the wet, bar standing water (obviously) - people racing them seem to agree too.
I had NS2Rs on my Clio 197 and found most of the above. Very loud, crashy ride, generally made my car feel old and knackered. Grip was good in the dry and acceptable in the wet. Also tried AD08's and they're a different league in all aspects. Much better all round and that's what i'll be going for when my current PSS wear out.
