The dreaded 'check injection'

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Deanr26, Aug 20, 2016.

  1. So after flying around in my car (r26) it started to splutter and sound like its running on 3 cylinders, dash says check injection and esp.

Without plugging it in what problem am I looking at? coilpack(s)? N75? Injectors?

    Thanks in advance.

  2. I'd go with injectors. Get it on a code reader though to be sure.

  3. That creates a second problem, I was planning on sticking 630cc injectors in the car but am I right in saying they need mapping in? I was going to do it when I got it remapped at rs tuining but I'm three hours away from them.

  4. They do put coil pack out, would be a cheaper fix to start. Find out what cylinder it is by disconnecting coil pack, then swap it with a good one and see if misfire moves cylinder. If so replace coil

  5. I've just been put to try the above suggestion and the car is faultless, nothing wrong with it whatsoever! Is it normal to come and go?

  6. What coil packs have you got? Are they green topped valeo ones?
It could be the coil is starting to break down but not gone completely, so plays up more when it's hot etc

  7. image.jpeg They're all black, I did notice a bit of what seems like oil hanging around. Any ideas?

  8. The oil is most likely the rocker cover bolt thats leaking slightly. The easy fix for that is to take the bolt out put a bit of sealant around the thread and nip it back up - not to tight as they can snap quite easily i think the torque value is only 7lbs/ft, but may be worth checking if you do decide to do it.

I was only asking if they were green topped valeo ones as the connector isn't as good as the oem ones. So by fiddling you may have improveds the connection.

I'm guessing their the oem beru coils?

Do you have access to a multi meter?
If so i would check the coils resistance values to see if there's any damage to one of them.
Watch this video it tells you how to check the coils, the first method is taking out the coils one by one that you have already done, so skip to about half way through.

Without a code reader though it is going to harder to pinpoint.

Personally i wouldn't think its the injectors themselves as they normally give problems at idle mostly and don't display the check injection, unless there's a wiring fault.

  9. Do you think the code reader will still pick it up bearing in mind it was 100% fine last night when I drove it? That's for the advice mate.

  10. No worries mate,

It should have it stored rather than active so should be in the memory still.

Was there any oil or anything that had leaked into the spark plug hole? As you may be just unlucky (or lucky depends on how you look at it!)and the contamination etc has caused a misfire, if you do get a cheap OBD reader or a bluetooth OBD thing and the torque app for your phone (More useful but more fiddly and a bit slower) it should at least tell you what cylinder was misfiring or if it is a wiring fault etc

  11. Ok brilliant I know a mechanic so I'll drop by and ask if he can have a check with his reader, I didn't know if I would be wasting the guys time if didn't store the fault code! But again thank you, this site is a massive help! I'll update when I've had the codes checked.

  12. coil packs 1 and 4!

Best place for replacements? He suggested not buying valeo

  13. Remember number 1 is gearbox side. I know it doesn't matter in this case but for future ref. I would go Gsf for coils. Never had a problem and changed thousands of the bledy things at work.
They also arch out between outer sheath of the coil and the plug hole.
You can pull out slightly when running and you will see the spark arching.
Might be worth checking other 2 [emoji1303]

  14. Thanks mate, I found a very reasonable site selling Bosch so hopefully will have four new ones tomorrow. I've never been on a more helpful forum than this, you can feel a bit out place asking mundane questions but not here, thank god I don't own a vw anymore.....

  15. Have you got a link Dean? Im after a set of coil packs myself.
    Cheers

  16. I got them from mister-autos. Euro car parts were £47+vat each but the above have Bosch for £31 each I believe I payed, as a warning though they take a week to arrive.

  17. Cheers mate. Just looked on euro car parts and the bosch ones are coming up at £33.59 each with the 30% off bank holiday discount so will go grab some in morning.
    Hopefully cure my problems too.
