looking for some experience here. background history. 2010 megane rs 250 29K on the clock. full service less than 4 months ago all belts/pumps changed except dephaser pulley as it didn't turn up on the day and I had travelled over 100 miles to get the work done so didn't want to have to come back again just for that. same time had swivel bearings replaced both sides. discs and pads front and rear replaced 5 month ago. Now we get to the problem as over the past few weeks the car has developed a faint whirring or seems like air rushing sound from inside the cabin. noise becomes obvious over 25 -30 and increases pitch with speed. No obvious difference turning corners left or right, No difference if I dip the clutch or shift to neutral at speed , still the same noise more obvious once I let off the gas. Have jacked up the wheels and can detect no discernible play from the wheels and no obvious strange noises rotating them. I really don't want to go to my local Renault dealer as they were going to charge me over a grand just to change the timing belt. So before I go to the next step of fitting new wheel bearings on the front could anyone out there shed some light onto other possibilities as to what this noise could be before I end up spending another wad of cash on my best friend for no reason and losing sleep over what calamity next awaits me
Do you get this noise at standstill, but revving the engine? The answer could rule out a wheel bearing. Did you check the rear wheel bearings for play?
no noise at standstill only whilst traveling and no movement on rear wheels which is what I suspected as rear discs come with bearings so only 5 months old
Who did the recent work? If not wheel bearings then possibly drive shaft/gearbox? Can you post up a quick phone vid of the noise?
work was carried out by Rentec in Edinburgh. Not sure the noise will be picked up on video as sat the missus next to me and said can you hear that and she said hear what. you know how it is when you drive a motor all the time and you know when something just doesn't sound right but chuck someone in that isn't used to it and they hear nothing. sounding paranoid now amen't I ?
grabbing at straws here as the noise definitely seems to come from the front end but just recently I fitted a rear spoiler extension made by Maxton design http://www.maxtondesign.co.uk/product/megane-iii/spoiler-extension-renault-megane-mk3-rs.html someone suggested this might cause extra noise.
It's possible, wife had a 308 and was adamant it started making a whistling noise but I couldn't hear it. Anyway 2 weeks of this on going on I took the car out for a tip run and blast. Windows down and music off. Around 45mph onwards this whistling noise became apparent, I quickly worked out what it was and literally all it was, was the side indicator on the drivers wing mirror had probably been knocked by somewhere when it was parked up. It had popped out creating maybe a 3mm lip, the wind at speed was hitting this and the change of aero from wind flow was creating a whistling noise, popped it back and noise went away. All I'm saying is once you start changing anything to do with aero, wind flow then you can create noise is pockets of air start flowing ways they weren't originally doing so. I was in honestly surprised because I've always been convinced my wife is mad but in this case she's wasn't.
No matter how I try to record the sound there just seems to be too much background noise inside the car, Oh well just have to turn the music up loud all the time and ignore till it makes itself more noticeable .ruled out the spoiler for sure ,
I have the same issue, sounds like an air leak inside the car from when going over 40-50mph, coming from the vent below the windscreen. But also when you take the car over 70-80 it gets louder and sounds like a pulley/motor and when you decrease the gas you can hear the pulley whirring as it slowing down (so hard to explain) but it is very annoying and even with music on you can still hear it. Im hoping it's not a big problem..as Xmas is nearly here!
Think I've got this noise. 2016 275 on approx 12k. Noticed it yesterday. Whistling /whirring noise that starts around 30mph, and gets louder/higher pitch with speed. Doesn't stop if I knock it out of gear on the move and doesn't change with revs, so think I can rule out engine/gearbox. Tyres are all new (on last summer, 4-6k on them I guess). I had similar noise a while ago that only manifested itself at motorway speed. Was caused by some crud that had built up in the drain holes at foot of windscreen. Cleared that and it stopped. I thought this was the same thing but the drain holes are all clear. Any ideas? It's doing my head in! Sent from my ONEPLUS A5010 using Tapatalk
