Horrible grinding/rattle

Use a length of wood, like a cut down broom handle.. Place this on different parts of the engine (inc alternator) and use it as a stethoscope to listen where the noise is coming from. (An old trick).
It should help you discount things if nothing else.

Was in with @Eddie_ getting my new mats and he was good enough to get a tech ro come out and listen to the noise.

Took a while for it to become audible, but thankfullt we were able to hear it. Consensus was that it seemed to be a metallic rattle coming from the exhaust, but it was ridiculously hot to be poking around the engine bay / exhaust area, so when the cars being serviced next month we'll have a better look.

 

The noise is almost 100% the heat shield rattling off the cat. Just to get the car in when it's cool enough to get it sorted @Nigelo

Yeah! Finally!!!!

 

Just back to say "all sorted" - got the local renault garage in Newtownards to fit a decat (they had suggested it sounded exhaust related when under the car, despite it sounding like a grinding/whirring sound) and the sound is completely gone now. Thank goodness.

Said a bracket had been bent and vibration was causing metal to rattle against metal.

 

Really nice its gone and wasnt a big thing !!!
