  2. Suspiciously good value.

  3. Halfords was £10 for 4 litres

  4. Didn't think Halfords did Shell Helix Ultra.

  5. if you don't already know, here's how it works, you only get what you pay for and that inc oil and brake pads, if you want big stopping power you pay big bucks, if you want big engine protection you pay big bucks, most modern oils and that inc Shell Helix all start out with good protection but only a few keep offering that protection after say 5 or 6 k miles, so its all about your wallet, your intended car use and how long you'd like to keep it.

  6. bobsan, not sure what you're saying. Do you reckon the oil I posted about is of poor quality compared to another REN0710 oil ?

    £26.59 delivered from ECP with code crazy30, or £34.99 for 2x 5l

my engine is quieter and the oil seems cleaner for longer with the shell helix

  8. Thanks Matt, ordered from ECP. Not sure if the 7.5% top cash back will work too...

  16. I am confused now.

  18. Yes I see now the thread started Monday. So not so helpful then.
(However it did state 34.99 last night.)
I was getting Elf oil as in the boot for £12 for 5 litres minimum order 20 litres from my local Ford Fuels and used by my RS dealer. So I will stick with it.
    Cannot resist a bargain though.
    Cheers Andy

  19. The cheaper Elf oil can be a poorer quality mineral blend such as Evolution.

If you want another cheap fully synthetic oil that is approved to Renaults RN spec (warranty friendly only) and don't fancy Helix, try Gulf Formula G 5W-40. £17.95 for 5L.

  20. Nice one
    Thanks Andy

  21. I always used Castrol Edge in the Megane and it generally stayed nice and clean looking for about 6 months.

The best stuff I've tried is Fuchs Titan Race Pro. I've used that in my Caterham and the engine just seemed to be smoother with it. It's far surpasses all the Renault standards but unfortunately doesn't have the approval (that costs a lot apparently!), so if you're in warrantee it's probably not idea if you end up having an engine problem.

  22. Flipping nora just got the adove delivered ,ordered yesterday 11:55 .just as I Posted the above comment!

  23. Fuchs Titan Race Pro S.

    Liquid Engine Elixir.

  24. ^^^what he said^^^

  25. Thumbs up for Fuchs Titan pro s. Using that in the m3. Will have to stick to approved in the Meg.

  26. Isn't it approved for the Meg ? I thought it was reassuringly expensive ?

  27. I'm presuming not. Would have to check. The bm runs quite hot on trackdays and the Fuchs Titan is good for high temp. There head office is in stoke and I spoke to their head chemist who reassured me. I've fitted a diverter valve that runs all of the oill through the cooler which helps, it does take ages to warm up properly now though. It is top dollar! When's your first track day. I'll be ordering some nankangs as soon as you've fed back.

  28. Spa 21 July + DN15 Ring 22 July. The NS2Rs have taken ages to scrub in on the road but I was expecting it with R tyres. I have done 500 miles, some of it at 8/10ths and purposely aggressive turn in / shallow lines and they have just about stopped squealing when warm at 2.4 bars starting at 2.0 bars cold. Prior to that I am not even sure they had as much lateral as the PSS !
On the other hand, they are amazing longitudinally and particularly under braking. Noisy again but brutal. They've been OK in the wet, only lost the back end once!

  29. What's the torque steer like?

  30. Oil quality does not directly correlate to Renault's own specific RN standard. Market monopoly and commercial links apply. Hence Elf.

  31. Yes sure, agreed - conversely the Helix maybe cheap at the moment for other commercial and market forces reasons and not because it's poor as suggested earlier in the thread.

  32. Possibly worse than road tyres as the side walls are quite unforgiving in more ways than one - difficult to tell if it does translate to exacerbated TS though. I didn't have the PS3s on for long enough to tell.

  33. I'm mainly noticing it when overtaking and flooring it. Not as bad in a straight line. Loosening up nicely and goes well though!

  34. I used to have a Clio cup with schrick cams and that was sensitive to tyres. Soft sidewalls would flex and exacerbate the torque steer. It was always fine with Michelin's best and eagle f1s. It was circa 205 bhp so not anywhere near as powerful as the Meg.

  35. Agreed, oil quality and performance warrants a bit more research and analysis into its detailed specification before being discounted just purely on price. Individual usage and personal running requirement are also very critical factors.

  36. It's clear to my you guys are at a stage where a modicum of confusion is abundant hence why you're scratching your heads as to why somthing like Helix/Elf is cheap, recommended by the manufacturer, you can't see any reason not to buy it yet someone is suggesting it's substandard. If you have a passion for engines or all things mechanical and wish to further your knowlage and by conducting bit research into things like 'flash point' 'pour viscosity' 'stay in share' and 'double esters' at some point hopefully you could start to understand why oil like Fuchs and Motul are double the price of the above and why that is so, (it's nothing to do with market forces) plus why I mentioned earlier you only get what you pay for. Incidentally Helix/Elf etc are by no means substandard, they just offer a different kind of engine protection.

  37. I know all of that. The point you are completely missing is Renault only warrants use with oils approved to their own RN standard. Only certain oil manufacturers are commercially committed to meeting that standard. Superior performance oils exist but are not RN approved. Market and commercial forces tied into new car warranty requirements.

  38. I use Fuchs.
