275 Michelin Pilot Supersport Tyres

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by Lewis, Jun 25, 2016.

  1. Anyone run them? Basically I have the Cup 2 tyres at present but the fronts are almost worn out already (6k miles!)[emoji51] so thinking of going for for Super Sports next. I have the 18" wheels on my car, and looking at widths the MPSS is almost as expensive as the Cup 2 in certain widths (235 is what I'm running at present). Anyone else run them in a different width (thinking 240/45 whatever is available)?

    Thanks lads.

Ps. Pic of my cup 2's in case anyone is interested in a set for themselves (they are great!)

  3. Yes I run them on my 265 at 19". TBH not noticed any difference between these and my previous Continentals.

  4. I've used a shit load of different tyres through the years. Super sports have superseded them all. I was blown away by how good they were. That was on an e46 M3

  5. I couldn't agree more the cup 2 tyres are excellent !

  6. Cup 2 are miles better than the PSS in the dry, different if it's wet tho, ps cup don't like standing water

  7. I drive my RS4 when it's wet lol
They are terrible in the wet !

  8. had a full day at Oulton on the cup 2,( in dry conditions) they still look like they have another couple of trackdays left, pretty impressed with them, got 6 new ones left still : ) running 2.5 % camber

  9. Have a think about the PS4. Overall as good as a PSS, better in some areas, bit weaker in the dry.

The Cup 2 is a bum choice just for road use unless you are one of those types that reckons they drive around the UK permanently on the edge. Bollocks of course.

PSS offer decent grip but the soft sidewalls really, really let them down. I ran them last year before going onto my winters. Wont be fitting them again though.

  11. Got MPSS in 225/40/18 on my R26...Best all round tyre I have had for wet/dry grip.
Lots of manufacturers use them as standard on there hot models..

  12. Why do you run 225 on an r26 when it originally came woth 235? Price or stiffer tyre?

  13. Yes Michelin are a good example of a manufacturer that's committed to developing world class tyres and the PSS was a huge step forward in tyre technology, leaving the rest field to play catchup.

Michelin seem to loose their way a bit with the PS3, but have clawed back big time with the PS4 as possible the best all round tyre money can bye.

  14. just to clarify for a certain numpty, i use PSS on the road and PS cup 2 on track

  15. I've just fitted a pair of PS4s to the fronts, initially impressions are extremely good. More wet and dry grip than previous tyres. Seems to be quiter and a bit more comfortable as well.

  16. ill get a set of PS4 once the pss have died.

  17. I don't see the problem is if you have Cup 2 tyres on road ? I drive with them on my car no problem very good tyre ! I can understand with 888 tyres or similar! But there a lot of performance cars that come with Cup 2 tyres now. I do the odd track day and I'm off the Spa and the ring for a week in July.

  18. The mrs has got ps3's on her R26 all 4 are needing replacing within the next month, I was personally going to opt for the pss for her as i ran them on my modded R26 and for a road tyre were excellent.

However i see that ps4's are now out and come in the correct size of 235 instead of 225 of the pss.
Am i best just telling her to get the ps4's banged on?

  19. someone seems to think you drive on the edge of adhesion every time you go out if you have the cup 2 fitted, work fine on the road.

  20. Can we not turn this into a bickering match about having sports tyres on a predominantly road car, who cares. I haven't been on track in my car yet but I still want the best performing tyre I can buy for the car which is why i went cup 2's. I find them ok in the wet you just have to drive sensibly.

Anyways back on track. I've heard this talk of soft sidewalls on the PSS before but as mentioned they are fitted on loads of other 'hot' cars so they can't be bad?

  21. Looks like the general consensus agrees with me then, a PSS or the overall better PS4 just for the road. We got there in the end...

A Cup 2 is a good road and track choice, but an expensive and compromised tyre just to tool about on the road with.

  22. I've just bought a spare set of Tibors and will probably go with a track focused tyre. Very tempted by cups. But £200 a set more than federal and nankangs ns2r. What to do!

  23. I've just swapped the fronts and rears around, running Cup 2s

I've done c. 3000 road miles and 2 track days, 1.5 of which were dry

My second set of wheels have finally turned up and I have PS4s on them

I will be moving to DZ03s for track and stick with PS4s. Only reason for the move is that the Cup2s seem to really, really get destroyed in the dry so rather than have a road tyre for track, I'll just get more of a pure track tyre in the DZ03

I'm sure I can run the Cup 2s for a while on track only. Once the tread has gone they may even last a fair amount of time

The PS3s were not a replacement for the PS2s, but the PS4s are

Expect a more track orientated PS4 in 2017 from Michelin apparently. A good thread on PH about them with Michelin employees posting was useful to explain the line up

  24. They're brilliant but at the front they will relatively quickly chew their outer shoulders, but at an acceptable rate on the road. A stiffer sidewall tyre like a Yoki 105 is a good alternative that gives more feedback and hardly less adhesion. The PSS do have a very soft sidewall, even by road tyres standards.

  25. I agree 100% with the last post.

  26. The wear on my cup 2's is superbly even. That could be the ohlins though. Set up perfectly she is!

Hmmm so the PSS do have a soft sidewall it seems. That will lose a lot of feel right?

  27. It's not just a soft sidewall issue, just the PSS is a more of refined sports road tyre than a Cup 2. That has advantages and disadvantages. Just have to decide what your priorities are.

  28. Going fast all the time lol! I jest, but perhaps I'd like more longevity in my next tyre and improved wet performance. I do love the cup 2's though.

Even wear has nothing to do with Ohlins. All Mk3's wear evenly as they don't run a lot of camber or toe in factory spec....

  30. Well set up then, ah you know what I mean!

  31. Simple choice. Down to you. Ignore inputs where someone can't interpret posts.

  32. Yep, guaranteed world class adhesion wet or dry, deffo won't be disappointed

  33. Ignore inputs from someone that doesn't have a car and doesn't have any experience of either tyre mate , ps cup 2 are fine on the road, PSS are better when it's wet, if you can get a spare set of wheels, best of both worlds

  34. Which michelins have stiffer sidewals? Comparing to each other. As I driwe a diesel it is much heavier on the front end, where i cpuld really apretiate a firmer sidewals than the conti sport contact 3 i currently run (and hate them for several reasons and Im very disapointed in conti as a whole) . Even tyre wear just much softer than the yoko advansport ive had previously (I run 235/40/18 tyres)
    Thanks in advance.

  35. For Michelin - PS2, Cup 2.

Also spec Extra Load on a tyre.

  36. As mentioned by others, PSS doesn't come in 235 over here..
I do notice they look a bit`stretched` compared to the standard 235...but grip is still fine..

  37. that is a fair point why to use that size

  38. What about 245 instead? I hate that stretched look! Rather balloon spec.
