Hi, I was a member on the old Meganesport forum a few years ago before it died a death, and signed up here to get a feel for folks' views on the state of the market for older RS Meganes. I've advertised mine for sale a number of times over the past six months, trying both Pistonheads and Autotrader, and only had a couple of speculative enquiries and no viewings. I've tried the usual things like wording the adverts differently, using different pictures, tweaking the price, but just not getting any interest. It's a silver car, which I suppose is the least desireable colour - LY might sell easier, but surprised there doesn't seem to be any demand for what was considered a really capable car when it came out. Do you think people tend to go for the newer models, thinking of the 225/230s as being too old/tatty/high mileage/bound to need work?
End of the day it All comes down to £ I'm afraid.... Drop that low enough, someone will take it!! I'd also try GUMTREE /EBAY. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
What's the milage mods and price? The R26 prices have dropped a bit average is probably 60k for £6000 in good nick with mods for a LY. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
But low enough to some is an absolute pisstake, I was chucking in my details on gocompare or money supermarket (I forget which one), and allegedly the book price for a r26 with average mileage is about 2.5K! Sent from my HTC Desire EYE using Tapatalk
I can't shift mine either. Mines a 225 lux with cup pack and not a sniff. It's 45000 miles and under 5 grand with belts done under 12 months ago. It needs for nothing but it appears no one is after one.
Give the WBAC type chaps a try. Sometimes they can be on the money for an easy sale. Snag is you can now pick up newish motors on cheap credit. Older risky stuff hangs about.
Cheers for the suggestions. It's an '07 with 75k mls, and I was pricing it around £5k. I didn't want to drop it too far in the £4k's, as it would have been quite a bit lower than others are advertised for and I was worried that would put people off as they would assume it must be a dog (which it isn't!) I thought about Ebay, but never bought or sold from there before, so wasn't sure if it was worth a pop. Gumtree considered too, although when I've used that for other cars in the past it was mostly time-wasters. I have had a price from WBAC, but I know their business model is to knock it down further when they see it, unless it's perfect (which no nine year old car will be.) However, I might have to just take the hit, as don't want to keep re-advertising it indefinitely.
Sure, but it's what cars sell for, not what people are asking that's important. Are all those R26Rs currently advertised worth £18-22K? No, because nobody is buying them.......
Just to give you an idea, I recently bought a black r26 for £4400 with 78k. New tyres, pads, discs, clutch, timing belt and recently serviced. Also had remap. Possibly lowering your price might get some interest. Sent from my SM-T810 using Tapatalk
Like a decent one was going for £6-7k which is what I got mine for two years ago. Means I have less to spend on my next car!
I think the colour plays a huge part when I was looking white and yellow had a huge premium so did having the LUX pack, a standard in silver will be hard to sell for the same price as those colours I would imagine if nothing has been done to it. I got my white lux with 55k miles last year for under 6k
That's useful, thanks. I'd be happy if I could get that sort of offer as its £1k more than WBAC. In one of my ads I did have the price down about £4,500 but still no interest. Understand re the silver comments, but not much I can do about that unfortunately
Just to complete the story, after another few weeks of dithering I've bitten the bullet and sold to trade for £3,260. It's £100 more than WBAC's online price and I'm fairly sure they'd try and knock it down further at the appraisal whereas the dealer I sold to didn't even attempt to revise their online offer. Barely inspected the car, so must be pretty confident they can make a decent margin on it. I reckon it will be on a forecourt in Glasgow or Edinburgh soon for £6k+. There really wasn't a lot wrong with the car, so someone could have had a bargain.
That would pain me to do that! Wbac offered £4200 for mine but that's a silly price! Guess it depends how quickly you need the car gone!
Don't worry dude, a car like yours won't sell from a dealer for £6K+. There's always lots of people overvaluing their cars, trying to flog them or just dreaming about values. The market and buyers decide the price, and when the dreamers actually come to sell they suddenly realise the words are cheap, money on the table is harder to achieve. Look at all the unsold stuff sitting around.
I think it's a case of following the crowd. I'd have accepted £4k for my car no bother, but didn't see the point in advertising it at that level - If I was buying and all the cars were advertised at £5-6k, but one was at £4k, I'd think it looked to good to be true so there must be something wrong with it. I'd agree folk might have an inflated view of value though - I paid £5k for mine three years ago when all the others were advertised around £7k.
Some odd logic there. You didn't want to advertise at £4K because buyers would think something was wrong with it..... Buyers are generally pretty savvy and will soon establish if you and the car are pukka. Everyone likes a good value deal. You pay the price for a quick sale to the trade, that's the system. Easy money. Plus, if you paid £5K for it 3 years ago, you didnt get a bad price for it.
I sold my LY with 51k for £7100 in January. It was mint though and had just had a new .R clutch, tyres etc, it must have been one of the best in the country and the first person to come and look bought it.
I'll be after an r26 in August if all goes to plan. I must say it looks to be a buyers' market as there are a lot out there, but there's no substitute for an enthusiast owned car so this will be my first port of call once the e46 has gone
Just to reignite this topic. I am a purchaser with cash waiting, so interested to see what is out there?? Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
just keep scanning the for sale section on here...some diamonds do show up..i bought mine from meganesport.net back in the day.....The guy was a member,so I could trace his posts to see how he treated the car.. Still have it now 6 years on..no problerms..ever
So few and far between though and am getting impatient!! Have started looking at other stuff but can hold on for a bit. Hoping buying around Christmas would be good from a buyers point of view.... Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
