Optimal track tyre size

  1. Hi,
As i found a set of Kosei K3 alloys to use on the track i am a bit confused about the tyre size to get. Alloys are 17x7 so pretty narrow, whats the optimal tyre to get over them? At first i was thinking the wider the better on the track but some tyre calculators reffering the 235/40 to be too wide for 7" alloy and the perfect size to be 205 or 215. Anyone running 7" wide alloys at all and does 225/45 enough for the track and suitable on that alloy size?
    Any ideas welcome.

  2. I'd bin them. A 225/40 will be at the max limit. Not sure what your wheel offset is either.

For the track you want the best boots you can get and an 18 x 8.25 rim in the correct offset (ie stock) is the way to go. Shove on some decent 235/40 track orientated rubber.

  3. They are ET50. Also its a proper forged alloy in weight of 7kg so pretty light and just perfect for the track but i was afraid also that its too narrow.
I have a set of Cup alloys with winter rubber so i think i have to use them for a track tyre, just wanted some 17" for the lightness and cheaper tyre price.

  4. It's your call really. You can use the 17's stick cheap Chinese rubber on and have a laugh on track, or go for a narrow width dedicated track tyre.

Because you used 'optimum' and 'wider may better' then there are always more effective but costly solutions.

You hear people say track days are just for fun but they then spend huge amount modifying their cars just to nibble a bit of lap time, go a bit faster. Hypocrisy.

  5. 7" is way to narrow for the 225. It will get deformed and wont hold its shape through the corners.
A 8" width wheel is odeal for a 225 slick tyre.

  6. There are some thoughts really. As im a real beginner on track i may go and drive with my everyday Pirellis also and have some fun at first. But for the cost effective purpose and to get more out of the car it would be smart move to buy some separate set more track focused rubber.

  7. That said twice im getting rid on the idea of those alloys really.
Most fun for the money is to buy some Federals on Cup wheels and learn to drive on the track i think
    Thank you.
