235/40/18 will be fine thats what I'm running on an 8.5J wheel. I went with Michellin Pilot Sport 2 tyres as didn't like 3's never tried the 4's and didn't want the Cup2 tyres as wanted an more orientated all weather tyre on these. £104 each via Blackcircles.
Cheers mate not sure on what tyre to go for yet will also be going round Combe and some other tracks in near future
Not sure how the PS2 behaves on track ? Presumably it overheats quickly and chew its outer shoulders mucho pronto ?
PS2 was fine for Nurburgring they do warm quick though wouldn't want them for a track day however didn't want to use R888R or Federal RS-595 driving all way there in case weather turned. As it was it pissed it down and snowed for 1/2 my trip so was pleased with my choice as the PS2 were perfect for wet valley roads and the snow as well as ideal for Nurburgring itself.
Good for what they cost, used them on road and not to bad. Had a blow out at Rockingham with one, wondered at first if tyre had got to hot and delaminated but appears debris punched a hole and caused instant deflation.
Im using 225/40 R18 on 8,25" wide OEM wheels without a problem. There are less sidewall like this, better for cornering i think. But im thinking of buying Federal 595 RS-R tyres to my second set of Cup wheels and thinking of 235/40 R18 as it looks less stretch like this so i would like this look more.
One set of tyres trying to cover both requirements well will always be a compromise. If the track is important to you, then the Cup 2 is a good choice. If the road and a more refined all weather tyre is more important, then go for a premium sports road tyre and compromise on track. Your decision.
Actually yes, if they are your only set of tyres/wheels and you are not often on the track, then its smart to just choose some premium road tyre. With my previous answer, i was thinking what i would do, but i am using different set of wheels for the fun
