New 250 Cup Owner

Discussion in 'New to the Club? Why not introduce yourself?' started by neilrs, Apr 11, 2016.

  1. Picked up my full fat 250 Cup on Saturday AM. It's going to be setup primarily for the ring ; so effectively a "fast road" setup, but I'll do track days in it also

It has been remapped to c. 290/310 and has a milltek exhaust. Have a trip planned to RSTuning to go for a hybrid turbo and some other bits, hopefully give it a bit more poke from 3rd onwards and added longevity with a bigger cooler, looking to add an oil cooler etc

I'll be going for a 'rear seat delete' - quite liked the additional practicality of my old R26.R with the luggage net so will try and find a bar and netting to do that

It's on 19"s currently so will be moving to 18s. After going to RST I'm looking at a suspension change and have my eye on an Intrax setup as I know they were very good on the M3 CSL at the ring

Hope to see some of you at track days and events in future !

    Cheers
    Neil

  2. Good move Neil. Will be interesting to see what pads you go for and what tyres. I take it you'll also want a bit more front neg camber ?

  3. hah, i've literally just ordered the pads and am sorting the wheels and tyres now

    Performance Friction - 1001.01 Fronts, 0340.97 rears

Wheels.... was looking at Volks and Advans, have asked someone on here I found in a thread that they were a disti for OZ too. And then there's team dynamics ... the pro race 1.2 are a bit of a staple and you cant get much lighter sooo... I'm leaning towards TD because they're easy to get hold of (ie no import nonsense) and sufficiently light/strong. Offset, they go up to 53 so i'm thinking that should be fine.

Tyres - i'll use Michelin PS2s. I used to run Dunlop DZ03s on the R26.R and after doing some lap analysis (used to run video vbox) we found that there was no cornering speed difference between the PS2s and the DZ03s. The 'feel' was definitely different, but in many ways the PS2s were safer as they would make a load of noise before they let go.

Camber.... I'm fitting some Superpro bushes that allow for an extra 1.5 degree camber (and the corresponding front rear arm that allows for more castor too). Then i'll look to the geo guys to help me find the balance between "drive-ability" on the road versus benefits on track with any additional camber to dial in

Think that's about it. Aiming for a reliable 350/350 car that's a load of fun to drive on road (safely), at the ring, and doesn't get left behind at the odd UK track day

  4. Surprising about the similar times PS2 vs DZ03 but I guess this is only the case up to the point where the Michelins overheat (2 hot laps?). I am getting PF Z rates too up front but staying OE at the rear, not sure that's wise.
2 degs at the front should be optimal. How much are those Superpro bushes inc labour ? Cheers Neil.

  5. Not really, the PS2s never really over-heated... I use to drop the pressures after a couple of laps so they were running at the correct temps when warm. Good tyres to be honest.

I never do more than 15mins or so in a session

And at places where tyre wear isn't that strong - e.g. the ring, it was constant

^^ That's the list of the purple bushes (fast road/track)

Labour - not sure, as I'm getting them sorted at the same time as a bunch of other work. £50 for an hour maybe ?

  6. Some choice mods there but as mentioned there is no way the PS2 can achieve the same grip levels as a DZ03 in the dry, particularly when it's in the zone.

For a decent dry track you would be pissing a lot of that mod capability out of the window running the PS2. A huge weak spot that would significantly negate the other mods through the bends, braking and in low traction zones.

  7. I like your style - bold words! I don't disagree with the theory... because hey, who buys DZ03s when PS2s are more capable as an all-round tyre on the road / in wet / not tram lining through Belgium etc...

BUT, that was previous experience and repeated at numerous tracks. I totally accept it was a different car (R26.R). So...I hadn't planned to start running a vbox again (old ones were sold with the cars) but I think what's needed is a track day and then some analysis of the traces afterwards to see if it's still valid

Once I get the car's engine sorted, i'll be taking it on track prior to any suspension changes, so I may be able to see how it goes then. I'll happily stand corrected

  8. Yep, I'm a bit more blunt than most. Sure if you want the PS2 as an all round tyre, but that is changing what you originally said tbf. The theory is proven, in the dry, on track the DZ03 will have more grip. Just like a PS Cup 2 has more dry grip than a PS2.

If you are running a 350/350 Mk3 with coilovers and using it to its capability (important bit) on a dry track then the PS2 will quickly become the serious limiting factor.

Of course there will be situations when a PS2 will do better, cold tyres and wet.

Im surprised if you like a tyre that covers a few bases you don't go for a Cup 2.

  9. Or a NS2-R. I am confident I can melt a front PS2 in 5 laps even if "optimising" the pressure. It just isn't designed for the purpose, at least at 10/10ths.

  10. @Aerofoil, sorry let me qualify, as I wasn't clear about the PS2s...

    when i said:

I was meaning that you wouldn't buy DZ03s *IF* you were getting the same speeds on track as you were with the PS2s. And that's the experience I've had previously

So.... as I say, I don't dispute anything being said, but that was my experience. If the DZ03s had been notably different in speed as well as giving a better feel, then I'd get a set of those. All i can do is try both again, hook up with you guys at a track day, and it sounds like you may be able to show me a few things

  11. Fully understood. It all comes down to just how far you want to push a tyre really.

Investigating where the grip level of the DS03 starts to exceed the grip limit of the PS2 might be worth it. I reckon that's the only way you will reap the benefits of the mods planned.

Another way way to look at it is, you would be pretty pissed off with some bloke driving past you on a track day in a fairly standard car just because he has a decent set of boots for the job.

  12. Bedford 02/08 ? Only problem is that you might be able to show me a few things - I am all mouth and no trousers.

  13. Who's organising it? Not a huge fan of Bedford in FWD cars but should have everything together by then

  15. It's a Renault UK TD.

DZ03's are noticeably quicker round a full lap than PS2's, Ive ran a vast amount of various tyres on mine and the Direzza's are my go to for TD's

  17. Sounds like I need to order two sets of wheels....

I'm probably going to go TD. 18x8, ET55 - no issues with rubbing I assume?
