I was thinking about it the other day that after the Trophy the natural stage would be to get a 250/265... I'm not 100% sure if I want to do that though, I've got a growing family and while I've never had nor will have issues with 3 doors I wouldn't mind something a little bigger, something a little more refined... If I was to stray from Renault though it would have to be something that would show the meg a clean pair of heels while still being fun to drive and still fit a pram in the boot... I'm not sure many cars in my budget exist! I always thought I'd drop into a cayman or elise next but with no back seats that's out, and are they the vast improvement over a megane I want? Maybe I'm asking too much! I quite fancy a 400/400 335i, I'd reckon it would be entertaining but it's no b Road blaster. Any suggestions?
335i's are ok but can be money pits , not overly reliable and costly to fix. the 335d's are the better car imo, simple remap just as quick in the real world and mpg is unreal.
Revo mapped Golf R, sounds nice to me.... Golf R has plenty of toys to play with as well.

REVO Stage 2 Software from 374ps to 401ps from 340lbft to 380lbft

Pointless discussion without knowing this.... I recon Daz will want to spend about £15k. If he's thinking 250 etc ☕️
Probably about 14k Max - we've just bought a house so we've got to put some money in that - part of me wants to buy a nice daily for the wife to use and spend some money on the Trophy but I have itchy feet!
Without going into the ins and outs of it, 14k could get you a nice new PCP deal. Clio 220 Trophy, Golf R, M135i, Focus ST etc. - all 5 door family friendly and all could show your Trophy a clean pair of heels arguably, given the right circumstances. I'll wager they're all better on fuel, cheaper to insure, safer & more reliable. You get to chose the spec too. You'd have to check the pram would fit though
C63 are decent but hideous on fuel and they eat tyres and are not good doing anything but a straight line my megane embarrasses my friends on roads where we live
If you're keeping it, even PCP route, then think of resale- buy VAG. I recently looked at three year old GTiS and couldn't believe what dealers wanted for them against a new car. Not even decent specs. Then I browsed some Mk5s and they were still strong money with big mileage on them.
Let's just say a new megane is 30k , anything that will show it up will cost at least about 40k to 50k With your budget you will probably get something quite old and high miles and a money pit, I don't think you have enough money tbh
Depends on your definition of old and high mileage I guess. I'm fairly tolerant on what would be described as a money pit, I've had plenty of cars that some would class as money pits!
I can vouch for the a45 amg leaving the Meg behind on B road blasts. 360bhp standard but with a map & intake you can get 440bhp. Lee
True and we always come back for more! , but a 50k car will always have 50k parts if you get my meaning. I meant if you had a ten year old car worth 5k would you spend another 10k on top of that for another ten year old car.The trouble with a megane the bench mark is high performance wise.
For a long time I've been buying ten year old cars. Spending between £5k-12k. This doesn't include the current Meg 175. These cars cover a host of Audi's, A4QST/S4/S6/RS6, BMWs, E36 325i/M3/Z3MC, TVRs, Chimaeras and Cerberas, etc etc. All expensive cars when new, some more than others. Mileage ranged on that lot between 45k and 155k. They all needed consumables but to be honest the higher milage cars were no worse than the low ones in that both age and milage causes parts to deteriorate. I find I can criticise a car that's three years old and suggest bushes, drop links, dampers, brakes etc. The five year old or ten year old car is no different and in some cases you can get hold of a car that has just been fully refreshed. Of course other aspects need consideration like paint, rust, interior wear etc. id say that depends on the initial quality of the car. Cars are not as well built as they use to be. That's a fact. Audi peaked in the early 00s. The S6 I had was so well made compared to the current ones. The standard of the plastics and interior finishes just a different league. Thing is everyone wants a new car these days. 500,000 new cars were registered in March in the UK alone! That's crazy! Where's all the old stuff going? Most people these days don't ever own their cars. PCP being one of the major reasons. The country is more number plate conscious than ever. It seems so important to most these days. I currently Lecture and Instruct young aero engineers and wannabe pilots and whilst I knock about in an 08 plate Renault they are going out at lunch time in 65 plate Audi's and BMWs. Some Mercs some STs etc etc. most of them earn about £12k a year as an apprentice. Anyway, I recon Daz can definitely get something nice for £14k. Just needs some careful buying. Daz get yourself a copy of Modern Classics. Some inspiration in there. Or eVo!
I'm seriously thinking about knocking it on the head for a few years now, the new house will eat at my funds, the wife deffo needs a new car before I do. I've no issues leasing but I always expected to lease the wife a car rather than myself - She can get a nice daily for less than £150 - for what I want I would be adding at least £100 to that - a lot of coin to commit when playing with the house is now the priority! And to be fair to the Megane I've had the itch to play with it for a while now, It's the longest I've owned a car which speaks highly for it as I tend to get itchy feet after 18 months... I reckon in the short term it'll be a choice between spending (sensibly) some money on what I have or going for an older 250. The Trophy would get a diff, seats and a few more bhp's (currently 253bhp) The 250 would get probably just a remap. Decisions!
If you're happy with the actual car (as in 2dr/fuel) etc, keep it and spend your pennies on making it better. In my opinion the Meg 2 looks better than the Meg 3. Apart from the novelty of a new car and differences I can't see the advantage of getting a 250. You'll end up spending money on getting it right and as it should be before moving forward with it. Money that can be better spent on the Trophy. Trophy is a special car. Keep it! I had the same dilemma with the 175 Cup I've got. We've now got a 10wk old baby and the car situation needs attention but I think I'll be keeping the Meg and getting the Mrs a better daily, something better for holidays, prams, dogs.
The Trophy has been an excellent family wagon, with the doors being so long it's actually been a lot easier using it than some of the 5 door cars Harry (son) has been in.
This is why I said I don't think you have enough (house and family to consider) im not sure what you earn, but myself 15k (its what I paid for my rs265) is my top budget and don't want to be spending out on repairs ,its ok buying cars but how often do we think about running them ,if your happy with what you have keep it .
cant agree more, I'm always looking at 911 turbos to put along side the R, just cos I've always wanted one, just chucked a shite load down on a 3rd house to rent out, I'll wait till I'm 50 for the 911.
Similar here, I am looking at maxing out the mortgage payments and trying to clear it down in 6 to 10 years. Aim is to get debt free by 50. Hard to do though once browsing PH or autotrader, and especially seeing all the big names moving to anodyne turbo versions of all their cars (Porsche, BMW etc.). Very tempted to chop my Meg and race car in next year to get a Gen 2 Cayman S but that is a move that would still take £10k or so away from the mortgage blasting fund.
That's what we've just called our son. Looks like everyone is in agreement with you. Keep it! In terms of the Meg as a family car. I'm yet to be convinced on that one. It's not the doors it's the boot that's the issue. Fire in a pram, some female shite and dog food and the only space left for me is the front centre console!
Jesus some lease deals cost more per month than my new mortgage! We are very lucky in the fact we both earn good money - We plan on being mortgage free in 15 years as we will be overpaying a considerable amount - an amount that yes could go on a nice car but it just becomes dead money. No for now I'll stick as I am I've decided! I have some shares that mature in 3 years, hopefully it'll be a good chunk to put towards a nice car.
