Racing Megane 225

  1. Racing has got to be better than time attack, and cheaper per track time

  2. £300 entry for normal round which is qualifying (15min) and 2 races (15mins + 1 lap) but our series runs on a rebate scheme so the high number of entry's the more money you get back, most back is if grid is over 24 we get £150 back! so trackday type money then.
then this year we ran a anniversary cup on the Saturdays which was £100 entry and was one qually and one race

  3. very nice! - sounds rather tasty as well!

  4. some photos from the weekend

after the race on saturday (id finished 9th so gained on the 10th i started) id noticed id killed my front slicks to canvas which was a disaster
so for sunday i was on slicks on front and AD08s on the back so over the weekend i started on 1.08.4 and ended on high 1.10s just didnt have the confidence with it and also rained a little so was a damp track..
but on sunday with a larger grid for our championship up to 29
qualified 15th, first race finished 14th (had rained didnt have racing wets just AD08s)
in the last race managed 3rd in class part due to some others having issues and tyre problems, one other in class that was running slow realised this so was blocking me very well from the start and had let some slower ones past at start but blocked me in as the potential class points and 3rd place class finish but i managed to get past after few laps but was too much of a gap and an accident resulting in a redflag ment i couldnt catch the slower ones in time to get a potental 8th overall instead was 10th and 3rd in class but this resulted in a trophy and a terrible photo receiving it haha

  6. Will do proper update but raced in final rounds of Welsh sports & saloon championship at pembrey yesterday 30 car entry including an blancpain spec Audi R8..
Qualified with my fastest time yet 1:07.9 gained another half second! And didn't drift any higher than 1:09 over the races
finished first race 6th in class and second race 3rd in class..
tyres lasted very well this time..

  7. Fantastic effort mate!, great consistency in the times also!

Any plans for the car over the winter months then?

  8. Cheers mate.. Think the extra gains are my pair growing bigger haha

Engine needs rebuild so will chuck some rods and Pistons in, New turbo need more ponies..
plus finally put a diff in as that's holding me back big time..
also gonna make some wishbones and rose joint and solid mount Everything I can see how it goes.
many more plans but so many of them won't get done I doubt haha

  9. Why the need for a rebuild ? Just for more power

  10. Very tappy top end and yea also for the power

  11. first one for a while..
    over past week,
picked up the new spare engine for racecar thanks to Tim (Y)
and off loaded and started stripping to assess the engine before the parts buying begins..

and before this my biggest update
moved to an new premises.. well moving.. got so much stuff to move over this week..

been waiting for this to happen for month or so as couldn't start the winter rebuild until id moved..
and as a part of this moving to legitiment business premises is being a part time business to help pay rent so was born JWmotorsport (i know very inventive name)
so expect some developed megane based items in future... various machined bits, fabrication, CAD and an AC/DC tig welder may be involved!!
and also mk2 golf items as im building a second race car to sell on as well may even race it one round next year, is a potential class winner (lower class than megane) in current form never mind with the extras planned..

Good to meet you at the weekend - look forward to coming down to Pembrey to watch some racing! youll have to pretend im helping you prep the car so we can get mine in the pits with yours!
workshop looks mint mate! very nice, where abouts is it? So is this just for you to build your own cars or are you going to start working on other peoples too

  13. cheers mate.. Yea would be able to get in pits no bother..
waterston industrial estate by the dragon LNG terminal in Neyland it is.. There's someone few workshops up doing detailing which may come in handy too..

yea to do my cars but I've always done bits for others will start doing more now in a new workshop
My old one was on a farm so always dirty and dusty no good for stuff where cleanliness is key..

  14. [IMG]
car moved and few other bits moved today
first time been near the car for couple weeks.. It took a jump pack to start (small tired dry cell battery)
But looking nice and shiny in the picture haha
so winter build can now begin finally..

  15. [IMG]
front end all off.. Ready to pull engine..
can do some tidying and cutting then to get some weight off the front end..

  16. well first update in a while..
been busy elsewhere and with work but past week got cracking
    pulled engine and box

then split the 2 as gearbox is coming apart for diff change
nice plated Gripper diff on its way to me as we speak
    [IMG]

engine bay now ready with access to tidy it up and reroute my wiring and extiguisher piping better than last year
    [IMG]

Shafts and hubs going to have a refresh too while they're off
    [IMG]

    so gearbox rebuild time
first issue is amongst all the manuals and drawings i have for meganes the NDO transmission isnt in any of it
so while spliting the box and struggling for ages i found this sneaky bastard circlip hidden behind a core plug
    [IMG]

so for anyone that has built these boxes can see this is not side the gearset is normally once you split the box that because i found the circlip afterwards
    [IMG]

so gears apart diff out ready for rebuild once i can source the bits i need.. help welcome off anyone that knows the part numbers for the difference box components
    [IMG]

Hard to believe im gonna be racing in just over a month...

  17. Well had a very nice delivery today
    [IMG]

and carried on with the rebuild of the box.. Got the part diagrams so that's a plus
but problem is the graphite ceramic bush I found in pieces in the gearbox casing is not on the parts list so worrying on where it has come from..

Old diff bearings are very snug fair play had to break out the hydraulic pullers, all I wanted was the bearing number or they could have been left alone
    [IMG]

  18. Stripped down and rebuilt the gear sets today to check out all the synchros are all good seen as its apart

Broke out the gunk and pressure washer today to clean the casings
    [IMG]

just still need to source the bearings now
got all the numbers but struggle to find them all online so gonna have to go through my works supplier I think

  19. Is that an skf hydraulic bearing puller you have got there?
Think I have got the same kit.

    Puller fwend!

  20. Haha yea Life saver for doing bearings.. It's my mates not mine though like £700 worth is too much to have in my garage..
Have got one in my work too though

  21. So managed to source all the bearings and seals for the gearbox thanks to Paul@RPD
so will have them this week hopefully

so in mean time thought Id give the hubs a refresh (found the lower bearings were fucked as usual)
so them bearings are on there way to so got the paint cans and brushes out
    [IMG]

and while was there thought I'd paint the gearbox casing my signature orange haha
    [IMG]

then the selector arm was taken off while sorting the sticky nylon bush and gave it to my mate to mill flat so I can short shift it for the mean time, as I plan to make a taller CAE type one in future as now with HANS devices mandatory i feel even more restricted and it just feels so far away haha

Also started a Facebook group so will be updating on there aswell as on here now and gonna try update more often once season starts
    https://www.facebook.com/joshwrightmotorsport/

picked up Opie oils as a sponsor too so got some good discounts there now

Mmmmm so you can do hub bearings then josh! You up for doing mine when they need doing? Seem fine at the moment but sure it'll happen eventually

  23. Yea I'd be able to do them.. Mine felt OK while driving
but Small bit of play one side and when I then split the hub could see they needed doing there was actually one needle missing so think someone had been at them before

  24. well update from past few days..

hubs refurbed with the new cup bearings, feel smooth and solid now
    [IMG]

having no access to a miller any more had my mate cut out the selector for short shift
    [IMG]

bearings and seals arrived for gearbox thanks to RPD
    [IMG]

Diff bearings fitted to the Gripper LSD
    [IMG]

bearings all fitted an gear-set and selector forks all fitted.. like a jigsaw puzzle.. if anyone needs it I have the rebuild manual for the ND0 box now..
could only get it from the Nissan usage of the box nothing from renault
    image1%2051462_zpsrnfbspwd.jpg

Then convinced a mate to help out by doing the job I've been putting off for a while..
the wiring, tidying up and rerouteing so he made a start today

  27. Where did you manage to pick up the coilovers at that price because on eBay there nearly £800 . Car is looking brilliant buy the way loving the thread.

  28. Cheers mate.. And bought direct from BC but was well over year ago so prob changed now..

  29. Ahh ok thanks for your help anyway

  30. well no racing this weekend unfortunately..
dissertation deadline next week got too much to do for that had to make a call last weekend to drop out and focus on that..
who knew doing part time degree would be difficult haha
but atleast the project will be useful for the car
Just some FEA to do on new and old.. had to make some simplifications on the orignal as pressed stuff come with hard dimensions to measure and im not pro enough in solidworks to use the sheet metal tools

  31. Hello,

If you don't mind, I can come with a couple of suggestions regarding your design.

The back uniball is facing a lot of shearing on the rod side with this design. Because you have a front uniball which allows the arm to pivot around the Z axis and because the joint between the H bar (the one linking front uniball to ball joint) and T bar (transversal bar, linking H bar with rear uniball) is fixed (welding), all the forces coming into the wheels on the longitudinal plane of the car will bend/break that rear uniball. The stock arm has a rubber bush with limits this pivoting around Z axis.

Also the angle of the rear uniball is wrong, because it doesn't take the forces longitudinal neither from the T bar, neither the pivoting of the H bar. That is certain the first failure point of the design.

That camber correction on the pillow bar is not going to be able to support the forces in that point. The only thing that keeps it in place is the friction between the 2 metal plates. High frequency forces from the road will overcome that friction force which is more suitable for low frequency inputs.

You have too many welding joints on the design and this is not a proper way of doing it. Also they are going to affect your repeatability in production (i know you don't want to produce it but I believe an engineering thinking still need to be deployed)

You should aim to have triangles inside the arm for best resistance.

If you want, I can happily discuss more on this. I hope my observations doesn't offend you in any way.

  32. Well a break for tommorrow even though I'm not racing I've had opportunity to drive the safety car for the BARC race meeting at Pembrey
Will be good day again from how today went I'd say
    british truck racing championship
    ledgends
    michelin Clio Cup
    junior saloon championship
    and Welsh sports and saloons

  33. Not a lot been done but a little more wiring as been busy with work and finishing dissertation
but did have moment of madness and bought a Clio 172 to bomb around in.. It may see some trackdays soon
Gonna leave it with my garage neighbour as he's a detailer and then I'll post some pics but it will be having some abuse as you'd expect for a grand

  34. not been much progress lately, been extremely busy..

also been offered job with petroineos in Grangemouth in Scotland so will be moving soon.
so if anyone is interested i may be selling up as will not have the garage space for a while up there and could do with the cash.
so if anyone is interested make me some reasonable serious offers and it could be yours..
would be selling all megane stuff i own, spare engine wheels subframe ect..
