6 point harnesses

  1. Sorry if its been covered before but what is the law on 6 points with aircraft style buckle?

Just been on the phone to a sablet supplier and they said the aircraft style isn't road legal? But what about the r26r? Does the .r have a special type of button push quick release ?

I can leave the normal belts in for mot, but what about police?

Car will be used sparingly on the road as its a weekend/track toy

    Cheers. Lee

  2. The R26:R doesn't have the standard seatbelt type, it's a little lever type thing. No idea how it'd be road legal then haha!

    Proper grey area this.

  4. As far as I'm aware, if the harness is mounted correctly (ie, to a correct mounting point on the chassis) and it is VOSA approved, then it should pass your MOT.

Most motorsport harnesses are not VOSA approved, but are FIA approved - in which case it's down to the luck of the draw with your MOT station.

I bought Titon 6-point harnesses for my 7 a couple of years back (http://www.primamotorsport.com/) as they're VOSA approved and FIA approved, which will pass IVA and MOT tests. I was also really impressed with the quality of the harnesses themselves. They'll make any size you like too.

  5. Cheers for that mate, ill look into them.

Iv read, that the r26r was the only car to be hologrammed with air craft styles, the gt3's ect actually went for a the official " road worthy test " ( not sure of the name ) with normal belts and are supplied to the owner to fit as his own will.

  6. On a side note, who can turn my air bag light off ? Or sort the resistors out for me ?

  7. They are legal provided you have not just stuck them in with standard seats etc.
I have not had any issues getting mine MOT'ed, I did enquire with VOSA a couple of years ago and this is their reply.

Thank you for your e-mail enquiry dated 12th August 2013, concerning MOT.

We are aware that the inspection of many of the new testable components
may adversely impact modified vehicles. We have therefore made provision
for most modifications to be accepted, provided that the vehicle is in
fact extensively modified to meet a particular purpose, rather than simply
modified on a whim and a fancy.

The Introduction of the 2012 MOT Inspection Manual was amended at the end
of April to coincide with the commencement of testing the new components.
    It states:

    Modified Vehicles

Where a vehicle has been extensively modified or converted, Reasons for
Rejection for components missing where fitted as standard should not be
    applied, for example:

a car converted for rally use (i.e. rear seats removed and fitted with a
roll cage and full harness seat belts etc.) may have been converted so as
not to require a brake servo or power steering

a car converted to a stretch limousine may no longer be fitted with
    curtain airbags

Additionally, Section 5.1 of the Manual will be amended to state: "An
adult harness belt comprising a lap belt and shoulder straps bearing an
FIA, British Standard or European approval marking (an upper case ā€™Eā€™ or
lower case ā€˜eā€™ and a number) is an acceptable alternative to any of the
    seat belt types listed"

It is also worth pointing out that Section 6.2 of the Manual, on Seats and
Doors, already contains a note in the Information Column which states:
"Original design characteristics and specialised modifications (e.g. to
enable wheelchair access) are to be accepted"

It must be remembered however, that modifications can only be accepted so
long as they comply with the Road Vehicles (Construction & Use)
Regulations 1986 and the Road Vehicles (Lighting) Regulations 1989 as
    amended.

The MOT inspection manual also states:-

If an ABS or ESC system has been intentionally rendered inoperative, the
whole system must be removed. However, this does not apply to sensor
rings or other ABS components which are an integral part of another
component e.g. brake disc or drive.

I hope this information has assisted you with your enquiry, but if you
have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us again.

    Kind Regards,

Some good posts above. I have also bought harnesses made by Prima a few years back and had the same discussion with them as provided in the link above. Like all these things it has to possible to get FIA/MSA compliant race cars to be road legal otherwise it would kill rallying stone dead in Europe.

The grey area is ECE marking which technically they are supposed to have to be used on the road in Europe. The only product I have seen which is both FIA compliant and ECE for road use is the Schroth 4 point ones with the red push button buckle. I know one guy that fitted them as he used to do a lot of runs over to the Nurburgring and wanted to make sure his car would be OK with the authorities over there, he may or may not have been a bit paranoid I don't know.
