TrackScotland Trackday today...

Discussion in 'Track Days & Track Driving' started by evojkp, Feb 28, 2016.

  1. Managed to get up to Knockhill for an hour or so and dusted off the camera, little bit rusty to say the least. Took a few pics and could not work out what was going wrong, then it all started to come back. Still need to practise more...

Good meeting Papps....car was looking very very nice and the cage is outstanding

    Here's some pics...

  2. Great shots mate - the panning ones are fantastic!!

Nice to meet you today as well Evo - my first 275 spot as well haha. Hopefully see you and the megane there again soon

Was a great day for it, just a shame my tyres weren't really up to the job (ad08r, 5-6mins tops before they go off)

Incidentally, the chap in the E92 M3 pictured above (stripped, buckets, AP discs all round etc) was running Pilot Sport Cup2s - he said they were only lasting 5 minutes - you read that right, FIVE minutes on track.....

It was 4 degrees and dry.....

  3. In car of the 458 Challenge mate

  4. How does the new Clio 200 fair on track? I'm looking at potentially buying one next year.

  5. Stevo, not sure about the driving, but it was being well peddled round the track and sounded and looked very good.

Papps, that is a beast of a car. The sound as it downshifted and dropped into Duffus...holy keech !!

I thought we were getting a visitor when this circled over the track....

  6. 5 minutes on AD08r before they go off!?

Can do 20 minutes no problem in the Clio.

    What pressures are you running?

  7. Some brilliant pictures there, there was some really nice cars there too.

Made me want to book the wifes car on for the last hour if there was room but she wasn't for having it :worried:

  8. Much also depends on what peoples definition of a tyre 'going off' actually is.

Yeah sounds like a pressure issue, I was running AD08's at Spa for 30+ minutes granted it was raining but even at KH i could do 20 minutes without them dying.

  10. It was strange, maybe I wasn't managing the front left tyre properly.

The first time I had used them in the absolute dry.

I was keeping them pegged to 31/30 Hot up front, and 30 rear. The air that was bled out of them as hot AF.

Jamie - it seems, looking back at my vids, that even half a lap not on it, brings them back a little? I've no idea, except that they stick right away, if they need that little temp to work won't that mean they'll go off too quickly?

You can hear my front left going off on lap 4 and 5 here...

Maybe I wasn't leaving the car long enough in the pit after a stint? i've no idea...

  11. I've read that Yokohama recommend around 32-34psi hot for the AD08r.

Tyre temps are a more accurate way of reading if you have the right pressures, not sure what the optimum temperature for these are.

  12. Thanks James - its all a learning curve for me.

I had used 34 hot on another trackday and had exxaggerated wear on the middle part of the tread, so I assumed that was too high....

The tyres seemed to have worn pretty evenly this time.

The weather is cold here as well - the air temp was 4 max yesterday, no idea if this affects moisture in the tyres etc?

Is an infra red heat gun a useful pit accessory then you reckon?

FWIW when i ran them it was 15+ degrees, Experiment with different pressures and see how you go from there.

KH is always hard on the front left though, Ive put a brand new pair of RS-R's down to the canvas in one day there as well, Granted my pressures where a bit off. Again i was running 20+ even on them and they didn't go "off" as such. That was in 25 degrees in the middle of summer. I found the AD08's to last longer than the RS-R's also, There are loads of variables tbh, Driver, Car setup etc.

Curious, What do you mean by going "off" anyway?

  14. Tyres going off - as per post 9 you mean?

So the bloke in the BMW went home after 5 mins because his Cup 2 tyres were wasted. Doubt it.

A contact pyro is better than an IR one but what are you going to do anyway with the info on a trackday? Options are usually limited and you can only do so much with pressures. Just stick your Mark 1 hand on the rubber, it's a good pyro. Sometimes you just have to accept tyres are going to work for you or not and playing with pressures isn't a the solution.

Inner tyre wear on the tread blocks (particularly on a road tyre) can also be down to a lack of neg camber and not just pressure related.

  15. The feel turned to jelly on the turn in, was getting a lot more understeer - and could hear them squealing a lot more basically.

It took me 3 sessions or so to figure it out. this could all be because I have too soft rear springs..?

Areo, of course the guy didn't go home, I'm just passing on direct first hand feedback from someone who was there on the day of a new product that has had a fair bit of interest on here - i assume he was only doing 5 or 6 lap stints.

I found them to get even better once they started to wear down also.

Interesting on the Cup 2 front, TBH i can believe it a bit, the Cup 2 is more road biased compared to the out and out track focused Cup 1, Hence its better Cold/wet weather performance.

  17. Interesting, because Michelin reckon the Cup 2 has more endurance and pace than the old Cup.

On the other hand they also said the PS3 was as good in the dry as the PS2.

The message is not to take one persons bit of paddock feedback about tyres 'going off' too seriously without a bit more trusted quality data and input.

  18. Haha cheers mate..

Here's what its like from inside the car  with slighly better quality - the scooby video you'll notice had to be edited slightly for unfair profanity lol, so its chopped it back to 30fps etc

  19. Its 'shocker' from on here mate.

I've been lucky enough to have the pleasure of some passengers with him in it - and F me.

There's no denying shocker is very capable behind the wheel - he can get the turn in, adjust it on the limit even through Duffus' and make it lookn effortless. Inside, its a great place to be as well. It will corner at ridiculously high speeds. Pictures don't do them justice also, they are head turning in the flesh imo - especially LY

I'm sure he can give you the low down - I was impressed

  20. Your right there Papps, the 200T really is a looker in the metal.

The Alien Green Clio just edged it for me though...I think the flames helped sway me

  21. Tyre wear in the centre would be over inflated yes you're right. Try 32psi and go from there.

I wouldn't run less than 30psi though, the sidewalls aren't as stiff as say an R888 or Dunlop DZ03G so they will roll over if <30psi

An infrared gun will help to give you a rough idea of temps, but a proper tyre pyrometer is needed to tell you what's going on under the tread (which is what is important for tyre temps). They're not cheap though and it starts getting a bit silly just for track days tbh.

R888 are not a stiff construction tyre, for that matter neither are Michelin Cups. Contact pyrometers do not "get under the tread" either but its irrelevant anyway as they only way to do it is to come straight in from a hot lap and have a handy mate take the readings when you pull in to your pit box. Also requires fast consistent driving approach which is difficult to do on track days and really needs to be done on a test day. You know straightaway when you get tyres properly hot the tyre surface will look wet, touch it and your finger will stick to the tyre and give you a nice burn (stupidly done this more than once).

Cup 2s are used already by a lot of racers including two guys I know running them on Porsches in 40 min races, the idea that they go off after 5 min on a track day is laughable.

    Nice pictures and vid.
