Electronic Fault/indicator related. Ready to torch car.

Right, a year or so ago my Meg started to develop a fault.

It would randomly throw up CHECK STEERING then shortly after that show ELECTRONIC FAULT, all the electrics would go mental, wipers come on and xenons flicker (one flickers and won't fire up properly now) the car would totally shut down but mechanically (bar the power steering) operate totally normal. In recent months using the indicators have caused it to totally freeze and follow the same action as above.

We connected he car to the clip and it showed a fault in the squib/steering control unit, it's common on Megs after about ten years so I bought another unit.

The new steering column and squib arrived today from Cooksport and I fitted the wheel all back up, turned on ignition, turned on indicator and the electrics froze.... Urgh.

Whenever it's done this previously as above I have to go into the bay and disconnect one of the ECU ports to reset it all as it froze everything and the battery drain takes a while to totally shit the car down so even disconnecting the posi on the battery didn't help.

I kept the car ignition on today when it froze and basically tapped/wiggled the connectors in the bay, after a few odd electronic noises the car seemed to reset itself. I have all the wiring connected up where it would normally sit in the battery posi and fed into the car via the bulkhead, I also have various earth points we've retrofitted in the bay.

Now it's replaced and its sporadic as to whether the indicators work or not and freeze the car. Totally at the end of my tether as I'm not electronically minded at all.

What do people suggest I do? Check the bay and disconnect/reconnect all the connectors to the bulkhead & ECU/check fuse box? Apart from it being a crap connection in the bay I'm totally lost.

Bare in mind I have an aftermarket OMP and my battery is behind the passenger seat. If that makes any difference. I need to put resistors in the steering wheel and I have a xenon out... If these could bare any relation to what's going on?

Balls, can't believe that's not sorted it. Did the indicator unit/arm come as part of that?

Yeh so I've replaced the whole thing. My heads telling me it's a bad connection in the bay. Which I need to tidy up anyway as I proper pikey'd it when doing the battery relocation.

  4. Call an auto-electrician, explain the faults/symptoms and see if they feel they can trace the cause?

If so, I'd get a max price first that they will charge if they don't fix it.

  5. Put it back to standard fit.

You're running the risk of being too helpful on here.

  7. Are you bringing tdk on Sunday. If so I'll bring my Delphi laptop as it sometimes shows things that clip doesn't.

No mate not unless I can fix her in Saturday (only day I'm free until then)... That's kinda why I wanted her working to run her out on the Sunday.

I'll jump in with Gav if she plays up.

  9. Best DIY advice you will get. Battery first, then HIDs, then OMP. Check all connections and feeds as you go.

  10. Just had another read of your post and if you are getting a reaction in the engine bay with moving connections, then also check the fuse box and multiplex units connections and wiring.

    Will do tomorrow thankypu

  12. have you checked the fuse box under the battery? another lovely bit of design, water causes mayhem in there.

I moved my battery so it doesn't have a fuse box under it so to speak. You mean the one to the far right of the bay? Let's water in for fun? I'm going to redo all my connections tomorrow and check all fuse boxes. Poor thing sits out in the rain no wonder it gets wet.

  14. Thats the fella, not under the battery tray but to the right. Multiple connectors and eventually the fuse box assembly.

Interesting read that thanks, we'll have to sticky the link to that!

  16. I've 100MB of those tech files stored here. If somebody can host them to a reliable site I'll upload them.

One for Gavin. He texted me before saying he wanted to look into it.

I'll ask Nik if he have any space to host files. Not 100% on hosting stuff that's not ours though.

In which case I'll setup a club Google Drive
