Drivers side CV joint . . . OUCH!!!

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by richmeg, Oct 19, 2013.

  1. Only recently purchased my 225 and it was in pretty shabby condition so still coming up with different knocks and rattles . . .

The latest one coming from the drivers side CV joint . . .

Visit to the mechanics and turns out the whole driveshaft needs replacing on these?!

Anyone any experience with this? Got quoted £318 for the part, does this sound right?

    Any help would be appreciated.

  2. Sounds like a bargain! Whats the catch? ha

  3. Just replaced both of mine, ordered from Ads on here for 140 each, fitting was 100 each side plud gearbox oil

  4. They be the recon ones on £10 exchanged then?

    No issues I take it?

  5. How much?! That's 1.5 hours work max if I had a couple of tea breaks included, working on floor!

  6. Cleetus who is Ads? Was it an exchange?

  7. fancy doing my one Beefy? (-;

Anyone else ordered theres from Ads? Is it on exchange? Might just order from Ktec £200 sounds pretty good compared to the £318 my garage quoted . . .

I'd charge £100 plus oil to do both sides,
Adz is your man for parts, he works for renault

  9. cheers Mark . . . how do I contact Adz? Will he mind since i'm a newbie . . . S-:

    He won't mind

  11. Ok so I fitted new drive shaft and the clicking noise on full lock remains?!?!

    Any ideas?

  12. Are you 100% that nothing is catching? Assuming its exactly the same noise as it wouldn't be the first time a "new" cv joint is faulty.

  13. Meh. You're not helping.

My 'car' has the same clicking noise. It's not the stickers - i've pulled them off. No sign of grease anywhere but knocks like mad under load on full lock.

Should of bought a Clio Trophy.

  14. Go buy one then and sort yourself out.

How is he not helping? strange question...

  16. I'm not suspecting its a faulty new cv joint . . . I'm thinking perhaps it could be the other side or something totally unrelated . . .

I don't see how it could be anything catching as the car is not lowered and rims are standard size.

The clicking noice can be heard on full lock turning both ways and only when accelerating, so when you dip the clutch it goes.

If that clears anything up?! S-:

  17. standard height or lowered?

No one on here has as much meg knowledge or helps with issues as much as BMH so thats a silly thing to say.

  19. Might be cv joints mate by the sounds of it, is it constant clicking on full lock at low speeds?

Both mine have gone will need to contact @Ads soon

mine have gone too, the seals are knackered and will no doubt seize up soon.

  21. Yeah that was the conclusion I cam to, as well as my mechanics . . .

So I was informed you can't replace just the CV joint but the whole driveshaft, so I have bought and had fitted the drivers side . . . but the clicking like you described is still audible.

Perhaps both need replacing?? Is it normal to replace both at the same time?

    Thanks for your help guys.

  22. Think you can just change the cv joint itself mate, someone more knowledgeable than me should be able to confirm but does the driveshaft come on its own or is the cv joint attached, just saying that because you still have the clicking

  23. I hope not cos I was told to buy the whole shaft! ha

But I only change one side (the drivers side), seems like a few people are talking about replacing both shafts when cv joints go, perhaps I need to replace the passenger side shaft as well . . .

Yes if someone more knowledgeable could chip in that would be great, this is turning into a costly repair?! S-:

  24. Haha thats meganes for you lol, is there any noise coming from the passenger side?

  25. no just the drivers side definitely . . . full lock steering both ways under load . . .

  26. Sorry - my bad.

I'll try and explain. I'm having the same sort of problems as the OP, and looking at all the options I was considering buying a recon shaft on exchange, but BMH mention something about people having issues with badly reconed shafts not solving the problems they were fitted for. This 'reset' my thought process, hence the 'not helping' comment. It was meant tongue in cheek, but obviously didn't come across that way.

Blame my writing style, the written word, the internet, the beer, me - either way I'll go back into the hole from which I came, social misfit that I am.

You're ok... jump out the hole, just trust me BMH is here to help and most defo knows his onions.

  28. ha thorough explanation . . . I take it no beer was involved (-;

so any more insights into this issue that we're having. I fitted a new drive shaft from Ads (I assume they are brand new from him?) but it hasn't solved the problem . . . going to pop in my garage tonight and see what they think . . .

  29. Some beer was involved.

Please update thread after visiting the garage, and good luck.

  30. I don't think its the shaft. could be be they generally only knock on full lock with quite a lot of gas.
Renault ex driveshafts are really good.

  31. must b very comon, mine have gone also didnt no you replace whole lot renault no how to make money dont they.

  32. Having the same problem changed the shafts noise is still there
cv joints tend to make a clack clack sort of sound yet mine is more like a relay clicking

  33. I also have the ticking, it's deffo a 'tick' and not a 'knock' so I wasn't convinced the CV was the culprit.

Damned if I know what it is though, I've checked and double checked for any visible signs of damage/wear around the o/s strut/hub etc etc; nothing found

It has to be linked to rotation of the wheel as the speed of the ticking increases with wheel/shaft speed.

    Bearing??

  34. Have you had a check for loose stickers on the driveshaft? My old 225 was sending me mad doing it, I took it to my mates garage and he laughed when he found it! It's just a metal-type sticker that comes partly loose and sticks out. It's quite stiff so clicks like mad.

  35. Tried that
I've removed mine and it still does it
thing is it only does it with the wheels turned and under acceleration

  36. ^^ yep, exactly the same as mine

  37. Only thing I can think is wheel bearing

  38. I have the same noise. Can only hear it at low speed when turning. Mainly round left hand bends. Deffo doesn't sound like a cv joint. I reckon it's possible it's a sticker or something as stated above.

  39. Exactly this, and had my off side shaft replaced today by Birchdown - noise is still there. Deffo not the sticker - I removed the one on the old shaft but it made no difference.

Just thrash the bollocks off it on left handers till something brakes? That what I really feel like doing TBH :worried:
