RS250 cam belt and service question

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Paul 250, Jan 23, 2016.

  1. I've only owned mt RS250 Megane about 6 months and it's due a 2 year service and having never owned a Renault before this one I rang the 3 nearest dealers for a price. Much to my surprise they were all very different prices. Ranging from the cheapest at only £149 which was in Wellington in Somerset to £281 in Honiton in Devon. I was also quoted £199 in Yeovil and all had different MOT prices too! So I've no idea which one to go to. Has anyone here used any of these dealers or can anyone recommend one? I've also considered the dealer in Exeter but it's a little further for me to travel or even where I bought the car from which was KTR car sales in Blandford but that's even further away.

Also when speaking to one of these dealers on the phone it was also pointed out the car will be 6 years old in September and needs a new cam belt which would cost me £799. Now my car has only covered 28000 miles so should I still have the cam belt changed as having only bought the car 6 months ago I didn't really want to have to fork out so much money on it already?

Thanks for any help and advice

  2. The only answer is "yes it must be done"... It's an age or mileage thing. Expect to pay around £400-600 depending if you have the water pump and or dephaser pulley replaced (I'm having all done next month and my cars done 52k)

  3. Yes you do need a cam belt. They degrade over time and if you don't do it according to schedule it will affect your resale value.

Go to a specialist like mick at diamond motors. I Would drive from london to nottingham for his service.

  4. K-Tec is £400 without water pump and £500 with. Obviously includes Aux belt, personally I'd go for the £500 option, 6 years old thats 2192 days old when required certainly with use / temp changes, it'll be deteriorating. Other option is not to change then see the bill when it goes

Mines due next year but as I don't think I'll have the car in 2023 I think I might just have mine done when I'm having my next bit of working done.

  5. I live in Yeovil & i had a service done in Exeter as it worked out about £90 cheaper than Yeovil. Dropped the car off, they gave me a bus ticket into town, few hours later back to pick the car up. Job done. I have used a so called Reno specialist in Somerset & wish i hadnt bothered, this was going off the back of `forum` info & feedback.

  6. always change the water pump imo.

If it goes in a couple years time then you have to do the whole lot again costing another 500 quid. You can't get to the water pump without removing the cambelt IIRC.

  7. Definitely get the water pump done no question.. I got the dephaser pulley done aswell.

  8. Yep, on my r26 my water pump went when I dropped it off to get the cam belt done!
