Suddenly my front right wheel is making a bit of a clunk sound when going over speed bumps at above 15-20mph. Also somehow feels like it has more give than the left, not sure if that's just my imagination though. Happened quite suddenly about a week ago, I didn't do anything out of the ordinary such as fly over a bump too quickly, wouldn't have thought any damage could have occurred but who knows. Car seems normal otherwise and the left side doesn't make any kind of noise. Any ideas what this may be?
If it's a mk3, then it sounds just like mine was. It was most noticeable over those half-type bumps in traffic calmed areas that are designed to allow buses to pass right over them. Mine did it at almost the same speed too. It did not do it however over the big ones in say Asda car park. Slowly it started to do it over the odd bump in the road too. Other symptoms were a tendency to dive to the left (the worst side it turns out) under really hard braking. Mine turned out to be the dreaded swivel hub ball joints that Renault want upwards of a grand a side to fix! Any local garage should be able diagnose that with a big bar though. And don't despair as if it is that, there are a few people on here that can replace them for a LOT less than Renault want. I had mine done (at 22k miles ) by Mark Black at Midlands Renault Specialists for under £300 for both sides with a years warranty. Hope that helps! Nath
Cheers all. It's an RS250 and it is over the smaller bumps. Have not noticed anything unusual on breaking, sometimes on a hard left turn though it does seem to clunk a little. Hopefully this isn't going to cost me a fortune....!
lower ball joint by the sounds then, price depends on who fixes it for you. Dealer will want to replace the whole hub whereas indys like Mark Black will just replace the ball joint.
I think I paid ~300 for the fitting and the whole hub, I think it must be cheaper just to get the ball joint done.
I've got the same but on the left side! Taken it to a local french car specialist, said there no play in the ball joint! I hate driving it at the moment because of this, especially the loose steering. Prefer driving the 2001 ford fiesta at the moment!
When I took mine in it needed track rod ends too, maybe your rods need replacing as that sounds like how mine felt.
I just had both lower ball joints replaced at £140 a side from Mark@MRS. Took about 2 hours all told and I was back to trusting and enjoying the car again
Much better prices, tbh I'll probably get him to do them if either go again. Though I now have a spare hub in my garage.
Thanks all, anyway I can can confirm this is the issue on my own? Jacking the car up and looking at the play in the wheel etc? Is it ok to drive it still?
I can echo that, great guy and has done so much to help me out at short notice. And I drove mine for a good few hundred miles, probably more, until I could get it done but I refrained from any spirited driving shall we say!
Hmm I paid for the alignment to be done because of how bad it was, and they said the wheels were miles out. Handles no differently now though Such a shame that the mark chap that people recommend is a 6 hour round trip, especially if he can't find what's wrong with it!
Thanks again everyone, booked in with Mark so hopefully he can get it sorted. Might have to drive the wife's 107 until then
Ive done a few drag link/stabiliser links on the bottom arms. Last was on a 250. That was knocking. You can feel play up and down in either end of the link balljoint if you bar them up and down.
