I have today finished fitting the charge cooler to my 225, was going to do this as i was working on it but, i thought i would get it finished first just in case I moved the battery to the spare wheel well, ran battery cables from engine bay through to the battery. I had already pulled the front off so i could remove the air con pump. Then a trial fit to see if it would fit, it's a bit of a tight fit, this is rated up to 700 hp Lined it up as best as i could, then made some securing brackets and then measured for silicon hoses. I also bought a radiator, i had a couple on trial but ended up using this one, it's from a Renault, a Fuego if you know what that is, (ask your dad )
Made up some brackets to hold the rad, i wanted to use the original inter cooler mountings, so bought some aluminium strips and made up a frame. The silicon hoses turned up. Then trial fitted the hoses to see what else is required. Kept having to close the bonnet and refit the impact bar to make sure nothing was in the way.
Next was fitting a circulation pump. Found a space for it in front of the gearbox and it almost lined up with the lower rad hose, just had to sleeve it down to the 19mm inlet to the pump, this way the pump always has a head of coolant to push around. bracket for mounting the pump. The pump didn't come with a bracket, luckily i had something left over from my gauges i installed in the dash. the pump is wired to a relay that it triggered form the pump that sits on top of the gearbox, so the pump will keep running after the engine is shut down. yes it is soldered and taped up.
Then it was time to connect everything together, plumbing wise. water is pumped from the bottom of the rad to the lowest point of the cooler, a bleed hole was drilled at the highest point to let the air out, the hose from the cooler went down to a "Y" piece one to return to the rad and the other to a reservoir tank, space was a bit limited to say the least, but i found this, all of 0.45 ltrs found a nice little spot for it i slightly miss measured the pipework, well not really, it's just different manufactures make things in different lengths, so i had to try and find another pipe, found this and it had a 15 degree bend in the middle fits perfect. Filled it up with a 50/50 coolant mix, bleed all the air out and no leaks :cool: This hasn't worked out the expensive, it's just the time. Charge cooler £69.00 Radiator £50 silicon hoses £49.13 reservoir tank £24.99 19mm Hose £5.00 pump £50.00 fittings and clips £12.50 2ltrs antifreeze £4.00 Now will have to wait till it's put on the rolling road to see how it performs, i have also fitted my 630 injectors and decat pipe now, so it will have to be remapped, it did run it for a short time and now i think i need a silencer now as i do not have anything there at all, 3 inch straight through Forgot about the air pressure and temp sensors that were in the old plastic pipe, i pulled them out and drilled holes in the outlet side of the cooler and plugged them back in.
Now this is something i have never seen before. Very interested to see how this does work and perform
Really interesting read fella - its all ways nice when someone does something a bit different! You'll have to get some logs of the temps once it's all up a d running properly I'm really interested in how it performs
Thanks guys Next step is a remap and rolling road print out. I have an OBD2 torque app on my phone, so i will keep an eye on the temps while they are doing the set ups and runs.
Not sure yet Dan, forgot they alter the map that way, only had one of my cars mapped before and that is my Espace, no rolling road i went and made the tea while he was doing it
who ever i choose to do it is going to be a long drive, don't think i will drive it there, more than likely trailer it, i have run it but it is running quite rich, will have to phone up and see what they say.
Paul didn't recommend driving it with the 630's fitted as all the injector values and fuel trims will be to cock. I swapped when I was there
Not enough to warrant not driving it ian, speck said at RS tuning it leans them out a bit up top but after all your only going to be driving it there not setting the world on fire. It'll be your injectors that will cause you biggest problems, after all the ecu will be telling to open for X amount of milliseconds, a 630cc injector will flow substantial amount more fuel in that time compared to the standard injectors. I put around 1000 miles under the belt of mine with the decat fitted before mapping as I wanted to check for any teething problems as the car had been in pieces for multiple jobs and encounter no problems.
