Hello all, following on from my Clio 200, thread here: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=47&t=1489456 I recently upgraded to a Megane 275 Trophy. This one is spec'd with Ohlins, Recaros, RS Monitor, and all the usual goodies. In a word, it's amazing. It goes and handles fantasically, and is a massive upgrade from the Clio. Despite how much I love the Clio, this is so much better to drive. It's also much faster. Still getting used to the power so far. Lovely that Just had a nose through your 200 thread, I had my clio 197 cup in gw same spec, loved that thing to pieces also :-)
Very nice mate I was luckly to have a go in a 275 r at Oulton park, very rapid bit of kit and easy to drive quick, but ohhh the brakes were shite
I'm guessing the R didn't have the brake upgrage then? Standard, I think the brakes are very poor, and that's just on the road. R26 was the same.
It was Renaults own car, i would have thought it would have the best stuff on it, all they said is it had only done track mileage !!!!!!
Plenty of wear on everything already then! Looks great, I really do like the facelift and that seems to be the ideal spec, Enjoy.
Thanks for the kind word lads Is this you Alex? I think the brakes have more initial bite than in the Clio but they do have a tiny bit of fade when you're really on it. I wouldn't say they are poor though by any stretch. In fact they're pretty good! Do fancy some of those awesome two piece discs though but we shall see. I should be keeping it standard it's already ballistic!
Might have a look at doing that then thanks. Any pad recommendations for mainly road use? I don't want a ton of aggressive dust either! Thanks.
I run DS1.11 on the front, they are pretty noisey at low speeds and do create a lot of dust - but they work in all temps - pretty hardcore for road only. I've heard plenty of the MK3 guys rave about CL RC5s pads - a good road option - I may try CL pads next.
Thanks dude. I have to say the current ferodo Pads are more than adequate at the moment but I would guess on track they'd not be up to scratch. Will wait and see if I decide to go on track with it first before spending any money!
I commented the same thing. I came from a 197.They just feel a bit duller over the Clio. Nothing some pads, braided lines and grooved discs won't cure but as I got Renault to replace the rear pads under warrenty and the fronts were fairly new so it'll be a while before needing them. Looks stunning in white. Quite the step up from the Clio too
Looks great shag, think I commented on POT tbh. I drove one at Oulton RS day, brakes felt a little wooden but stopped it just fine but brakes and pads are very personal. Guess your gonna track it??? Be nice to see one be used how it was intended! Lovely car mate
Cheers lads. To be honest I do feel the brakes are sharper initially than the Clio, but when you're trying to stop from about 100 approaching a sharp corner they whir a little and feel a bit like they could do with more oomph. Like you say pads and fluid will help. The Clio brakes were very good but again just faded a tad under the same situation. Considering both the cars are designed to be used on track and road they could do with being better. But that's a small criticism. The car feels amazing. It's so god damn fast when you are on it. Scares me which I love!
Dan - would like to bring it on track at some point yes. But I don't want to break it either as I need it get to work everyday lol. Should be fine though it's made for that innit!
Aye it doesn't. It's just the noise from the pads on the discs I think. It could defo do with more stopping power when you're really on it. Otherwise they're good. One thing on the car I don't think is excellent is the gear change. It's a bit gash compared to my Clio 200 and even (dare I say it) my wife's new ecoboost fiesta. Just feels a bit loose, and while the gears are close and it clicks in nicely there is a bit of play between those points which I feel they could improve on. My Clio box was ultra tight with zero play whatsoever, and made changes very easy when you were going quick. I sat in a new Honda type R and despite how good that box is supposed to be, again it felt a touch sloppy compared to my Clio. Perhaps I was just lucky with that who knows.
Agree on the gearbox! Worst part of the car for me- it is definitely a bit loose and the throw is quite long. I've crunched 3rd more times than I care to remember now I'm surprised I've got any synchro left. Just not very accurate when you are really going for it
Yea it's not really great. I mean it's alright but not as good as the Clio was I don't think. Too rattley between gears and not as clicky and precise as the Clio. Still, can't have everything can you!
maybe you can fix it , last time on Facebook i saw passing by an add on ebay for a short shifter kit or CAE shifter (quite expensive)
I agree, the clio 200 i had seems to have a much slicker gearbox, and the brakes also seem to feel a bit more responsive than my 275trophy
I find the brakes more responsive in my Megane actually a lot more so, but they also fade quicker too. Defo need a bit more stopping power especially with the speeds you get to in the Megane!
Echo the comments on the brakes. Worse part of the car for me, and a very real reason the car isn't faster than it is IMHO. The feel is fine, but the actual stopping power and the fade are terrible.
Well, it’s been a great three years in the Trophy and it’s been faultless in that time and provided plenty of driving thrills. She has been sold today and a replacement machine already sourced, new thread to follow!
