265 When to replace discs?

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by OiNK, Nov 17, 2015.

  1. Hey,

How do you know when your brake discs need replaced? Is there any indicator anywhere? Or do you measure thickness etc?

  2. sometimes there's an indented spot which wears away, sometimes on grooved discs, the grooves themselves is the indicator (e.g. Brembo Max discs), sometimes you need to measure, so no simple answer..

  3. Think there and indent on the edge of the disc, soneone on here recently fitted new discs abd spotted it.

  4. Yeh there's a chamfered section on the front disks at least that's there as a wear indicator.

  5. Any chance anyone could share a pic if they have it? Would be useful.

    Thanks

  6. You cant really miss it tbf

  8. Ahhh ok, thanks for that!

  9. I always thought that was for balancing purposes?

  10. Me too!

  11. Reason being because they've not been in the same place or the same size indent on the discs i've had.

  12. It doesn't even look the same size on the inner and outer faces in that picture.

  13. yeah, that shave looks way too large to be a wear indicator.. also, the min/max thickness difference for a disc is usually around 2-3 mm.. that looks to be way more than that...

  14. So....any final say on how to know when it is time to change discs?

  15. It is...

  16. Have to admit it does appear I was speaking out of my back side before.

  17. I wouldn't worry too much, I had a customer return a set of discs (after kicking off on the phone) because his discs had big cuts in them..... Turns out it was the machining for the balancing.

  18. Still no clarity on when you know to change discs? Surely there is some sort of guidance or marking?

  19. I changed mine when the grooves started to disappear on my cup

  20. Cheers, I guess that makes sense
