Drive shaft noise? R26

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by rTEM, Nov 7, 2015.

  1. Having humming noise coming from left front when turning right under load, sounds like a pallet pump truck on plastic wheels, is it from cv joint? Or lsd noise? Have to mention that the boot clip was gone for a while and had a lot of grease leaked. Think it is time to get a new drive shaft, car has done 62k miles, thanks boys

  2. I'd say so yeah. The shafts aren't the best anyway, without all the grease coming out.

At 62k miles I'd look at getting both sides done maybe. Usual route is recon shafts - think I paid £240 per side fitted a couple of years ago.

  3. Had my right side done last year, shaft is £140 + delivery, i am thinking to get the steering rack bush done at the same time

bought a brand new one for £180 and still have the old one to repair if i want

  5. Sounds more like a wheel bearing the way you describe humming and loading it up

  6. Ok, so best is to get the bearing and the shaft done at once? Car has done 62k

  7. I will press the clutch, will becerifull, to see if the noise is still present

  8. I'm with Dan on the wheel bearing rather than the drive shaft.
You will still get the noise even with the clutch depressed if its a wheel bearing.

  9. Yes thats what i want to find out, will go around a roundabout on my break, thanks

  10. As Dan says if it's as your going around a corner your just putting extra load on the bearing by transferring more weight onto it.

  11. Yes it does make sense mate

  12. Did a few runs around the roundabout close to work, the humming kind of grinding sound was still there after clutch pressed, not as loud but still there. So bearing, steering rack bush and shaft all in one go is it.

  13. Had a colleague from work to help me identify that noise, he is ex renault mechanic from polland, he thinks its the tyre noise?

  14. That's cheap if it was brand new. Ktec and ads (when he was here) both supply recon on exchange for a lot more than that.

I did go to my local Renault dealer and was quoted the best part of £500 for a new unit and nearly £300 for a recon one, so i was happy with £180

  18. I paid about 150 from RPD for drivers side r26, it's a recon I assume but fine

  19. They do not mention if recon or new

  20. It's covered in black paint and the cv clips aren't the same as original

  21. Ok, will see when it arives

  22. Just had the driveshaft delivered and it is as u have described

  23. Everybody seems to deal in recon units, and nobody seems to buy new (because of the price as above).

Makes me wonder where all the recon units came from in the first place? Even if you ask a dealer for a price, there automatic response is to quote the recon price.

  24. How did you get on with this? Mines making a very feint rumble/hum at sharp turn in (to the right) at low speeds (or I can't hear it at higher speeds!)

Was it wheel bearing or dry CV?

  25. What do they do to recon them?

Mines got the old ticking noise when going round corners and pulling out in junctions.

  26. New cv joint in them

  27. Can it be done in the home garage if i ordered up a cv joint? Pretty handy with the spanners.

  28. No idea mate sorry I'm no grease monkey! I'm taking mine to Mark's for an assessment but hr does stock the cv's not the driveshafts.

  29. Well none, wheel bearing and driveshaft looked ok, but got them changed anyway since i Had the other side done not long ago. That noise was still present and it must be tyre road diff noise. Only noticeable around roundabouts
